Lowen joins at LvL 2 in Ch. 12, standard early game Cavalier. This is the early game, so he’s not getting 9 levels in 5 Chapters (esp. with two of those being Defend chapters), and thus Kent is on the higher level upon rejoining. Early on Lowen’s tiny defensive leads are nothing to get excited over. Nor do Kent’s small Str and Skl leads matter very much; they’d about cancel Lowen’s tiny defense lead. At this point, by far the most significant difference is Kent’s Spd advantage. Said Spd advantage makes him notably better against a significant number of enemies (namely, the ones he DAs and Lowen doesn’t). A LvL 8 Lowen has 9 Spd. Base Spd values for some enemies: Cavalier-5 Mercenary-8 Myrmidon-9 Thief-9 Archer-3 Nomad-5 Mage-3 Fighter-4 Brigand-5 Pirate-6 Peg Knight-5 Then add in HM boosts, roughly +1-2 Spd for each. Then consider that this is if they’re at LvL 1, which they won’t be. They’ll be LvL 5 or something when Lowen is LvL 8. With all this considered the only ones Lowen has any chance to DA are the Archer and Mage, and even then it’s sketchy, and he certainly can’t do it with a Javelin (which he needs to counter them). Kent, on the other hand, has 11.5 Spd at LvL 11 (the level he likely rejoins at). He doesn’t get Mercs/Myrmidons/Thieves, and at first probably misses some Cavs and Slim Lance Pegs, but doubles most of the other stuff which Lowen doesn’t. Brigands have a 20% Spd growth; assuming a LvL 5 HHM Brigand has had 9 levels of class growth (4 natural, 5 from HHM boosts), then that Brigand has roughly 7 Spd. Kent doubles that safely (73% chance of having enough Spd to double), Lowen does not (7% chance of having enough Spd to double). Fighters have a 30% Spd growth, so after 9 levels they’d get 0.9 more Spd from growths that the Brigand wouldn’t, but they also have a point lower base Spd, so their average Spd is about the same. Another one for Kent. Peg Knights have 40% Spd growth, so a LvL 5 HHM Peg w/ Iron Lance has about 6 AS. Lowen has 26% odds of being able to DA, Kent has 90% odds of being able to DA. And so forth and so on. We could keep going. Kent has a significant offensive advantage against these enemies due to this. Against the stuff Kent doesn’t DA, he’ll also start doubling it before Lowen. Those other miniscule leads, aside from the Spd gap, are never enough to make a significant difference in this situation or that; they won’t change how the units are consciously deployed, and will only matter through sheer random luck. The Spd lead for Kent, however, lets you look at his stats, look at the stats for a group of enemies, determine that Kent > Lowen against those enemies because he can double, and make the decision to send Kent against them while sending Lowen somewhere else. This is, essentially, how the difference between most PCs manifests itself when actually playing the game; the better PC is better able to handle certain enemies, and can do so to the extent that the player knows it and therefore can manipulate it. Something like a 1 Hp lead is not significant enough that the player can consciously manipulate it to his advantage, except in laughably rare circumstances (liek, the RNs fall exactly so that that 1 Hp lead is the difference between whether or not the unit can survive a Luna Crit from Zoldam). Therefore, Kent > Lowen earlygame. Kent maintains a significant offensive advantage over Lowen for the entire game, too, as Lowen’s Spd is never going to be entirely satisfactory. It moves into the range where he can double most of the unpromoted garbage enemies instead of not doubling anything except Knights/Soldiers, but by the time that happens, Kent’s Spd has moved into the range where he can double all but the fastest enemies. Even as late as VoD, Kent has a considerable offensive advantage against nasty enemies such as Valkyries; he can double and 2HKO them with basic weapons, including ranged weapons, whereas Lowen can’t DA. Lowen’s defensive advantage, on the other hand, is not always significant. At first it’s not numerically large enough to be worth much; later on Kent’s durability becomes satisfactory for the vast majority of situations anyway. Observe: Taking an enemy with 25 Atk and 90 Hit (unpromoted enemies around this point have even less than this, so this is already somewhat favorable to Lowen): 20/5 Kent = 41.5 Hp/15 Def/55 Avo (70 w/ WTA) The enemy needs to hit him 5 times to kill him, and even assuming it’s a Bow enemy or something that he can’t get WTA over, they only have about 40% real hit on him, so even if he got attacked by 5 of them at once, they’d only have a ~1% chance of killing him. Against most enemies, Kent can get WTA, and like I said already most enemies around this time have less than this, so in reality he’s doing even better, and very rarely will Kent need to be placed in range of 5 enemies at once anyway. Lowen’s offensive stats are among the lowest in the entire game, so it follows logically that his offense is nearly never going to be up to par, and thus Kent’s lead in that area is nearly always significant. Kent’s defensive parameters, on the other hand, are quite good already; his defense will frequently (not always, but frequently) be sufficient, and in such cases Lowen’s defensive advantage matters little. I expect you to try and counter by dragging out examples of lategame 20/15 Lowen butchering unpromoted enemies in VoD. These do not impress me. Yes, Lowen's offense is satisfactory, in situations where about anyone's offense would be satisfactory. Kent's defense is also sufficient in cases where anyone's defense would be enough. However, when you move past that into the range of situations where most people's offense is enough, Lowen falters, as his offense is not up to scrub with that of most units. Kent's defense, however, is indeed up to par with most units, and so he's still doing just fine in times when most people's defense is enough. And so forth and so on. If it helps you to understand, Kent’s offense is more significant for the exact same reason that extra Atk matters more for Matthew than extra Spd, or that extra Spd matters more for Dorcas than extra Atk, or that you give your Speedwings to Oswin and not Lyn; an improvement in the area where a unit sucks is much more notable than an improvement in an area where they’re already doing well. If they’re already doing well at something, then most of the time they have enough in that area to get the job done without more (while the same obviously isn't true of the "problem area"), so adding onto the good area wouldn’t help as much as adding onto the problem area. Kent’s offense is a more notable improvement on Lowen’s offense than Lowen’s defense is an improvement on Kent’s. Another reason Spd is the most significant stat to have a lead in is that Spd can only be increased by Speedwings and gaining levels. Durability, the area where Lowen can claim to have an advantage over Kent, can be increased by that but also in many other ways: Supports can add Def and Avo, Ninis's Grace adds 10 Def/Res for a turn (or possibly more if you make use of the Rescue tactic), Pure Water and Barrier add Res for a time, defensive terrain can add Def and Avo and Forts also can heal the unit sitting on them, Reaver weapons can add Def and Avo against certain enemies, mass healing later on allows units to be more reckless, etc. Less durability is much easier to work around than less Spd. Note that Kent also has an advantage in support options, due to Sain being borderline god tier along with him. All the other units on Kent and Lowen’s lists are sketchy, but Kent can be assured at least this one support the vast majority of the time. Kent also can be promoted in LHM and used as a pseudo-jeigan if necessary. Kent the Prepromote and Kent the Standard Unit both have their merits, and both are available; he can be whichever one you think is better. However, Lowen the Prepromote is not available, and so Lowen lacks this kind of versatility. |
