The battle sprite is pretty hax, but Lucario's shading is eww. It's uneven over the color transitions and where is your light source? Mebbe you should stick to people. Make more battle sprites! |

How am I going to improve if I just stick to humans, though? I've more or less got the portraits for those down, and I'm not interested in venturing into full/half-body territory. I'm not entirely excited about entering the anthro-zone, but it happens when I'm working on a Smash Bros themed spriting project. One can't improve by sticking to their comfort zone alone, after all. If I did, I'd still be limited to splicing even after two and a half years of work. ... Also this is what I mean by elaborate. Just saying that the shading is bad and that color transition is off doesn't help; I need at least a general location; otherwise I'll wind up having to change the whole blasted thing without actually needing to. >_> This has to be what? The fourth time I've said this? Edit: And currently you're the only one to have any real major complaints on this one, so you're gonna have to provide the specifics. =/ Edited by Dei Enyt, Oct 29 2008, 12:11 PM.

![]() A: The shading here is pillowy. One pixel per shade on the light side of an object; sometimes you need even less (one px. of middle shade works if it starts to look too poofy.) B: See what I mean about the color transition not matching up? It should be one flowing line, not "blue part curves in and then black part starts at completely unrelated point". That works for headbands, but he's a single solid object. C: This is pillowy. Large patches of shading belong on one side of the object. This is what I mean by unclear light source. If the light is coming from in front of him, then the front part of the sausagehair should be shaded. Or you could, you know, attempt texture so it doesn't look so weird having that highlight. D : Nose looks like a beak. Take out your darkest shades and just use the light and middle. The whole nose will look smoother and more like one object. E: What is that dark part for? This makes the head structure look like it caves in suddenly there, meaning the light part is a ridge. There's also some overshading going on here. Again, light source. There's a lot of shading on top of his head, so it looks like he's lighted from slightly below the viewer's side. FE mugs don't light from below. F: This ear looks overshaded. For small objects, you don't always have to use the darkest shade in AAing. Edited by Asvel, Oct 29 2008, 03:13 PM.

See? Now that wasn't so hard, was it? And that being said, ![]() Followed your suggestions to the best of my understanding. The only thing I'm not agreeing with is the bit about the shading between his eye and nose; without it, his face looks rather flat. For the time being, however, I simply made it a lot smaller. Anything new to point out? Edited by Dei Enyt, Oct 29 2008, 04:42 PM.

There, much better. The shrunken eye-nose shading can stay, because now it doesn't make the structure look weird. |

I have never detested the GBA size limit as much as I do now.![]() Still working on it; not entirely fond of the shading on the far shoulderplate, but it's the best I could do for a first draft. Getting everything symmetrical was a pain and a half, too. Edited by Dei Enyt, Nov 4 2008, 01:03 AM.

Lookin' good, but the shoulder on our right looks smushed and his eyes are kind of dull. Add a pixel of shine to the pupil. |

I'm aware that the shoulder's are smushed, believe me. >< Going from something the size of an Xbox to the GBA limitations... bleh. >_> *ping* ![]() Also adjusted the far side of the face and the trim at the suggestion of someone from FES. Couldn't follow your suggestion about the eyes, though; made him look creepy... -er. I think I found a solution, though. |

Here's a tip: If you do Flip Horizontal and something looks off, fix it. Maybe his head's too far back, making it look asymmetrical. I might suggest copying the whole thing twice, erasing everything behind the chestplate, shoulderplates, and collar on one copy, and then pasting the remaining armor over the other copy a few pixels to our right. Then you can still have the original on you to fix anything that gets eaten by the transfer. |

Either ignore the size limit, push him down so the widest parts are too low to show up, or turn him sideways like Wallace or Barth. |

The mug reminds me of MK404's style somehow. It still needs tweaking though. I think it would be interesting to see this mug from the side like Yeti suggested. |

Unfortunately, that's a LOT easier said than done in my case. Human anatomy and proportion, as well as visual depth and anything else tied to side views, are NOT areas of expertise; I need a reference to look at when I make the lines, as in the reference needs to look just like what I'm trying to make. Since Ludveck doesn't have any official art or other poses in FE10, I'm kinda limited. It's probably my only Achilles heel with regular mugs. >< Edited by Dei Enyt, Nov 6 2008, 04:35 PM.

When you can break away from having to exactly copy the reference, then you'll know you've improved by a huge step. Just try it. I'm not going to jump on you for trying something original. |
