I don't see a real problem with it... As far as most are concerned, it's just a fiction book. Books in school libraries aren't always fully ... educational. |

I think this should be left to each school district/individual school to decide. As the topic's demonstrated, there are all kinds of decent reasons to support or oppose manga, comics, and other media in a school setting--and different schools use their libraries differently. Some do try to keep the "educational" setting thing going and as such only stock "proper" literature. Others treat school libraries as resources for all kinds of information in print (or in sound or video), and as such will stock things that couldn't really be called educational. And obviously you'd have to draw the line of deciding what's "good enough" to get in-- some will say all, some will say nothing, and some will let some series in over others. It's can't something you can make an overruling decision about. |
Check out the new FESS, featuring...stuff!

Although I've only briefly skimmed through the topic, I find it interesting that the majority opinion here suggests that the graphic novel is not considered as a "serious" or "mature" medium. This is particularly depressing because "comics" in the abstract sense (paintings, steles, etc. using registers to depict narrative) are probably the earliest form of documented literature, even earlier than written texts--more than enough time to establish their worth as a viable art form. For evidence, the Stele of Vultures:![]() Somewhat more recently, Maus is a Pulitzer Price winning graphic novel, if top-down awards are one's criterion for artistic integrity. Finally, books, film, even video games, are allowed in schools, why not comic books? |

I'm sure that's exactly what parents would like. Their school taxes raised even higher so comic books can be added to school libraries. |

While that would upset many, I'm sure, that wouldn't necissarily happen. I know when our librarian came to the graphic novel club she asked what she could purchase. The library already had a set budget. No taxes went up and no one suffered any monetary crisis. If it came down to buying a classic work or a book that was used in a classroom often, I wouldn't hold XMen over it, but not all schools have money issues. There is also the case of book donations and fund-raisers. Comics and manga in the school system doesn't automatically mean defecit in the school budget. |

No advancement in actually writing. No use of an an imagination unless writing slash fics. Hell the only one that could be made into a decent NOVEL is Death Note. Honestly, I really don't see the point, not to mention taxing on school funds which are ridiculously low as it is to cater to a small population. |

I hope this doesn't count as necro-posting but here it goes. Ok here is my two-cents. First of, manga has no purpose in elementary and middle school. Those grade levels are when they need to focus on full fledged books. That and most manga are for more mature audiences. Not many manga are made for kids. Second, manga could have some value when in a high school because it teaches another form of expression and can give them another career path to follow. And some manga show the struggle that people in real life have and the ways that people cope with them. I respect everyone else's views and have seen some rather good points. And I agree with Kogepan on several of the books that have no value. |
