Retiring from the Debating World

Well, I guess the time has come; I'm going to quit debating for good. Some people may want to read this to know exactly why, whereas for others that first sentence will be enough. Either way, I feel I should elaborate--it's only fair given my extensive history with FE debates.

Many different factors have compounded to produce this decision--one of those factors being that some of my favorite fellow debaters, WJC, Reikken, and Jeigan, have also retired lately, though in more informal ways.

Another reason is that it's just gotten plain boring. There's not as much thrill in it as there used to be. I've lose the interest and the motivation to continue to do it. There are certainly other things that entertain and satisfy me much more, and I think I want to devote more time to these other things.

Perhaps the greatest reason of all, however, ties in with my motivation for beginning to debate in the first place. Way back on GFAQs, when I saw WJC first debate FE, I thought to myself "Wow, now there's a master of his craft." And, ever since I started debating, my goal was to ultimately reach WJC's level, to be just as masterful at the craft as he was. After all, I loved a good challenge.

I feel as though I have now achieved that goal. There's a certain satisfaction in striving long to fulfill an aspiration, and the aftermath of that fulfillment, unfortunately, is inevitable disappointment with future pursuits of the same nature. Some might point out that there's still a step beyond this one (such as reaching Reikken's level), but even though that goal would be even grander than my previous one, it was not my original intention and, thus, has little meaning to me.

As for my tournaments, I apologize for any inconvenience that my retirement may cause. I was planning to postpone retiring until after I had finished my current tournaments, but I find myself lacking the motivation to do so. Sorry.

About the FEFF FE7 tournament in particular...WJC, I hope you will still post in Kent vs. Erk. You've also said that you're unlikely to continue debating, so it doesn't have to be an official post, but sometime in the future, I hope that you will post so that the debate can at least be archived. I suppose that's sort of an anticlimactic ending to the tournament, since, with both of us gone, Inui will be the only active debater left in it (unless Reikken decides to post), but again, I'm sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause.

Thanks very much to FEFF for having me for so long, and thanks for all the great debaters that I have faced while here (and at neighbor sites, such as FEP and FES).

I leave the world of debating with this:

WJC didn't quit, and he told me he'd come back and try to revive debating even after your retirement causes the semi-demise of debating.

Later.

Correct. I'm still reading a few topics now and then, though. And finishing up that patch.
