Well now, this is a familiar debate. First thing I’m going to point out . . . Rolf is locked to range 2, whilst Mia is locked to range 1. I found this really ironic . . . and slightly amusing. But hey, on with the show - although actually, my first point does relate to what I just said. Rolf can only attack at range, which means that in many situations, he won’t be taking a counter on the enemy phase. This would be good news for his durability; except for the fact this also means he can only kill one enemy per turn. Now, whilst Rolf starts off at level 1 a good bit into the game and thus gets more experience for a kill, other characters will be several levels ahead of him for a good long while - if not, forever. And, you guessed it, these characters include Mia. Of course, if you baby Rolf significantly, he can get a good amount of experience and be close in levels to everyone else within a few chapters. However, not only does this slow you down - and thus give you less bonus exp - it also deprives your other characters of exp. When these characters are the likes of Boyd, Oscar, Soren and Ike, it’s pretty easy to see that this is a detriment to you team. Chapter 9: One of the only difficult chapters in the game, if you want to visit both the houses too. Let’s see what Rolf looks like for this chapter . . . Rolf - Rolf’s Bow HP: 18 Def: 6 Res: 2 CEvd: 4 Evd: 16 Atk: 13 Hit: 118 Crt: 9 AS: 6 Well . . . Rolf plainly sucks. Not that this is unexpected for a level 1 archer, but still. His offence is terrible: he’ll only be doubling weighed down enemies and armours, and he’ll do a minimal amount of damage anyway. The only thing that ‘saves’ his defence is a lack of 1-range counter, which is more of a drawback than a plus. It saves his defence (since you won’t position him to take counters) but it sends his offence into the ‘abysmal’ range. Rolf is extremely difficult to level up. He requires protection, and he’s not even a particularly valuable addition to your team. Soren and the other magic users can fulfil the ‘back row fighter’ position with the added bonus of 1-2 range and attacking Res. In addition, he’s Simon Cowell’s protégé But of course, this wouldn’t be much of a debate if it was only Rolf-bashing. Mia joins two chapters before this, at level 6. So already, her level lead on Rolf is not to be sniffed at. Now, I think Mia can plausibly be level 10 by chapter 9. You get a bunch of bonus exp about this time, and as she’s slightly underlevelled compared to the rest of your team, it’s only natural you would give her a little bit extra. So . . . Mia - Iron Sword HP: 23.0 Def: 7.8 Res: 3.0 CEvd: 7.8 Evd: 38.6 Atk: 13.6 Hit: 119.3 Crt: 6.35 AS: 15.4 . . . As far as victories go, I’d say that’s pretty decisive. Mia only loses in Crt, and neither have Crt high enough to rely on. Rolf does have the 10% boost from both of his brothers, but given the fact that all three are designed for entirely different purposes, it shouldn’t come into play often, and almost never with both at the same time - even so, 19% Crt isn’t anything to really get worked up about. Hell, 29 Crt couldn’t be called reliable. At this point, I’m expecting you to point out the minute win for Mia in Atk. Well, I’m one step ahead of you there. The near-tie in attack is caused by Rolf’s - admittedly good - PRF weapon, with three Mt more than an Iron Sword. However, let’s bear in mind that this weapon is one-of-a-kind. It’s unbuyable in shops and with 45 uses, it will last a fair while, but not forever. Also, it’s not worth using the Hammerne staff on it, since by the time to receive that, there are better things to use it on and much better bows to be using anyway. On the other hand, Mia will shortly have access to a steel sword - if she doesn’t already. Whilst heavy, Mia can quite easily cope with the slight loss in speed/evade in return for better attack, and still be dodgier than the majority of your team to boot. Rolf, given his underlevelled-ness and much less impressive speed, can not expect to achieve results as good with the steel bow for a long time. But back to the chapter at hand . . . if you DO want to get the items from those two houses, your best bet is probably Mia. Titania and Oscar are both slowed down by the sand, and Oscar will take substantial damage from the axe users. Boyd is another option, but he’s also one of the best choices for dealing with the armours (if not, THE best choice). Since basically everyone but Titania and Soren has trouble dealing with these, it’s a good idea to have him stick around. In addition, Boyd’s durability is quite high thanks to his amazing HP, so he’s good for baiting the enemies. Mia gets the bonuses of the weapon triangle, isn’t slowed terribly by the sand, and with her already good dodge and the sand bonus, can avoid damage from the axe users. The mages may pose a slight problem, but there are only a few of them and the problem is easily rectified with a vulnerary. So that’s what Rolf’s joining situation is like. I think I’ll finish there. Before I do, I’d just like to stress once again the importance of the level difference between Rolf and the other characters. It’s going to be huge when he first joins and will remain a large difference for most of the game. In order to bring him up to speed you have to sacrifice bonus exp (either through slowing your chapters, or using everything in storage) which, considering your have several good-but-underlevelled characters joining you within the next couple of chapters, isn’t a very good idea. Marcia, Mist, Nephenee, Jill, Astrid, Makalov and maybe even Gatrie or Kieran: they could all use a little bonus exp . . . which you can’t give them if Rolf steals it. Jill, Mist and maybe Nephenee/Marcia at least should take precedence over Rolf. Not to mention all the characters you already have. Wow, I haven’t debated for ages. I feel so rusty . . . gogogo, Simon. |
