Appeals to emotion are used in debates all the time. Charisma quite often trumps logic in debate. Some debaters know this and utilize it as a weapon. But bewarned, I can discern between an appeal to emotion and an ad hominem. I believe most people I named as potential judges can. Were I to judge, I would look for excellence in a presentation rather than how I favor one or the other based on what it represents. |

IMO, you'd have to prove that your version of morality is more right than the other person's in an objective, nonemotional way. In other words, you can't be emotional, because of how immature that is, and I don't feel like you should try to appeal to the judge's emotions either, since they're supposedly somewhat nonbiased. But you could still use emotions, and simply prove why your emotion is more right than the other person's. I'm probably talking in circles now, so I'll stop. |

Sounds suspiciously like we're moving towards Definism to me, but I *think* I know what you're trying to say. What I would accept is this: If you can prove that your moral argument is logically viable for reasons entirely outside its moral substance, the point is valid. |

Best post in this thread by far. I'll follow in Soja's Sample. So - unless anyone majorly objects - Soja, Myself, and Nick/Neo/Solide will be judges. The only reason I don't say Rin is because she hasn't posted here, ergo doesn't show interest. Furthermore, I think it's fair to say judges will choose topics for rounds. |

So, has it been resolved that judges will not debate? I don't really mind... |

What is actually done in the real world is not under question here; we're simply trying to provide an atmosphere conducive to fair and objective judging. That being said, I think it's reasonable to give the judges the benefit of the doubt and assume that they can, at least to some degree, distinguish between a powerful emotional appeal and pure bullcrap.
Normally, I would ask that the judges be allowed to debate - that is the way that the FE debate competitions were always run, and very seldom did I detect biased voting in those (usually, the best debaters were the ones who judged, and they also proved to be the fairest and most objective in their decisions). However, in this particular case, three of the judges have already stated earlier in this topic that they will not be participating in the actual contest, so all we would require is two more and we would have a panel of judges completely unaffiliated with the competition in any other way. So, yes, I think it would be reasonable to ask the other two not to participate as well. |

Rin HAS posted here. In fact, Rin even suggested she be a judge. Also, Rin is speaking in first person. |

Forgive me, I tend to suck at reading. To rephrase my post in light of me being a dumbass... "So - unless anyone majorly objects - Soja, Myself, and Nick/Neo/Solide/Rin will be judges." |

K, so these are the plans (Basically Solide's ideas): 1. 1 5-panel crew of judges, primarily thought out to allow one person to debate. 2. 2 3-panel judging crews assigned to debates beforehand. Anyone have any problems? Nick/Neo/Solide/Rin want to talk over which option they prefer? |

I think I like option 2. Probably more efficient when it comes to the crunch. See, the five panel crew may lead to a debate between the judges themselves considering there will be more viewpoints to take into account. Three's effective, and with two sets, they can cover more debates faster. Also there's the added bonus of not having to read every single debate, just half of the pool. I can get really distracted if I have to read too many serious articles all in one go. Don't know what that'll mean for judges who want to compete, however. |

If you go with Option 2, let the judges also debate. |

Five might be better, since there's people who want to judge. It'll keep their interest as well. Three's fine, too, and easier. |

Um. Option two sounds okay to me. I'm guessing we'll use a selection from both panels if members from each panel come up against one another
