Dude, FFX is good. Easily one of the more enjoyable FF's. Fast paced battles are win. It makes me sad how underrated it is, just because people don't like the main character. |

FFX was decent. I liked the gameplay, enjoyed the story. However, I really hated Titus and Yuna. |

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars Release Date: May 13th, 1996 Publisher: Nintendo Developer: Squaresoft System: Super Nintendo Story Line One day, Princess Toadstool was outside Mario's house picking flowers. Storm clouds are above her and a noise can be heard in the distance. Swoosh! All of a sudden, Bowser came out of the sky and grabbed Peach. Mario rushes to Bowser's Castle to save the Princess and when he gets there, he finds that Toadstool is tied up and hanging from the ceiling with Bowser on his chandeliers. Mario jumps up and stops Bowser's plan, and as he unties Toadstool, there is a huge bang and all 3 are sent in different directions. Mario lands back at his house and goes to Bowser's Castle to see what happened. All he saw was a giant sword. Its plunge through the sky has shattered the Star Road. Mario must now go out on his greatest adventure to save the Princess and collect the 7 pieces of the shattered Star Road. Review SMRPG was one of the best games i have ever played(honestly it is my favorite game). The game was the first Mario rpg ever created(followed by the Paper Mario series, and the Mario and Luigi series). For its time the games graphics and the game play itself were really well done. Throughout the game mario travels through different lands collecting the seven star pieces. Along the way he meets many people four of which become your ally's, some new some old and some that you would never expect. Each character has their own style of magic based on their personality. For example Mario's magic is focused on his jumping abilities, and his fireball abilities, where as someone like Bowser has magic meant to terrorize people(that is actually one of his attacks). Each character also has they're own type of weapons. For example Mario's weapons are punch, hammer, and turtle shell based where as Bowsers weapons are claw, chain, and well......mario based. There are so many side missions including helping the yoshi's of yoster island, or gambling in Grate Guy's casino, you can always find something to do. However the only downside to this game is that there is no way to save after you beat the final boss Smithy. Game Play: A Story: A- Graphics: A- Music: B+ Replay Value: B Overall: A- |

![]() Game: 720 Console: Game Boy Color Year: 1999 It all started years ago. I was about nine at the time, and one day I went over to my friends house. He was pretty excited, because he had just gotten a new game! "My mom got this game for under a dollar at some garage sale!" he proudly claimed. "What game?" I asked. "720, it's a skateboarding game. I'm about to try it out now!". Now I know that children usually don't have good taste, but right then we were both able to tell that this game was utter shit. So apparently 720 was an arcade and NES game first, and apparently, they weren't half bad. Sadly, any remote traces of quality were not carried over to this GBC port, which is unbelievably shameless. So what exactly is 720? Well, its a skateboarding "game" where you have to well...skateboard. Yes, I quoted the game part because this is borderline between a functioning game and a bunch of random code thrown together. 720 has all the wonderful aspects that a bad game should have, shitty controls, bad graphics, unbelievably bad audio, and of course, gameplay that will give you negative fun. Due to the incredibly simple nature of the game, I'm going to literally show you every single thing you can do in this game in one review. Even better, I'll accompany it with screenshots, so you'll be spared of playing this game on an emulator. (which I did in order to refresh myself for this review) After the crappy title screen (top of the post) the game attempts to explain the controls, and then lets you choose your difficulty level. ![]() ![]() Confused by their description? Well that's to be expected, because I'm pretty sure the developers had no idea how their controls worked either. The controls are near impossible to work, and makes playing the game even more frustrating. Also, you might ask, "what's the difference between training mode and expert mode?" Well, it does something that I thought would be physically impossible in this game. In expert mode, the controls actually get worse than in training mode. That's right kids, the only difference between the two difficulties is that one has shitty controls and the other has even shitter controls. Wonderful! Now, it's time to actually play the game. ![]() Believe it or not, what you just saw above is a screenshot of what 720 gameplay looks like. Despite the fact that the Game Boy Color was capable of surprising graphical power, 720 goes for an old school look...as in Atari old school. When the game starts, you are planted into "skate city" where you have to skate, obviously. Now are there any goals in this game? Levels? Well...no not really. Rather, the game decides that you have to go around this city and enter "skate parks". How do you get to these skate parks you ask? Good luck finding them, because the game provides no map or clues as to how to enter these parks. Rather, you will find yourself wandering the dangerous city, blindly looking for a skate park. Yes, I said that the city is dangerous. How can the wonderful skate city be a bad place to wander around? Well... ![]() SKATE OR DIE! Yes, after 40-60 seconds of wandering, this rash message will appear on the screen. What does it mean? Basically, if you don't get your ass into a skate park in the next 40 seconds, a pink monster will come out and kill you. ![]() This is just one of the many forms of the pink monster. In this picture, he comes at you shaped like a skull. But other times, he may be a book, a pair of scissors, or simply a giant blob. The monster is ridiculously fast and is physically impossible to avoid. Once he touches you, you automatically lose one of your 3 lives. Sucks, eh? Meaning, you have to get to a park as soon as possible. Well after wandering, you might just find one! ![]() I'll be blunt: the gameplay and controls in the park are even more broken than those in the city. I have no idea what the fuck I'm doing when I enter a park. I just mash random buttons and get a "bronze medal" or some shit like that. Afterwards, the park closes and you return to the city. Process repeats. This is, literally, the entire game of 720. And before I finish, I need to touch on the audio. There are only THREE FUCKING TRACKS IN THE WHOLE GAME! The title screen, the city, and the park. Those are the only audio tracks you will hear while playing 720. And by the way, the quality of this tracks are abysmal, in both physical sound quality, and musical composition. It truly is a tragedy. Well I usually don't like using a "grade" system, but with 720 it's a must. GAMEPLAY: F AUDIO: F GRAPHICS: F OVERALL: F It is safe to say that 720 is the worst game I have ever played in my life. If you are looking to impose some misery on somebody, point them in the direction of this game. You will surely ruin their day.

Got bored at work. Here is the result... Also [EDIT] for pictures and reassessed difficulty. Pictures stolen from Harcore Gaming 101 untill I can be arsed to get some of my own screenshots up. --- GG Shinobi One Player Genre: 2D Action/Platformer Platform: Game Gear ![]() Released in the magical gaming year of 1991, the GG Shinobi and its later sequel, the GG Shinobi 2, were new and interesting additions to the Shinobi series that added a fun twist to the usual Shinobi gameplay. Unfortunately, these fantastic games ultimately went under the radar for most gamers because they were Game Gear exclusive titles and the Game Gear flopped due to the better design and games of the Gameboy. I have decided to review the GG Shinobi because it is one of my favourite childhood games. As such, I may be biased in how totally awesome this game is. You have been warned. Story The story is classical early nineties story telling, as in there is barely any plot and what there is is hilariously cheesy. Neo City is under attack by a mysterious and evil ninja clan and it is up to Joe Musashi and the Oboro clan to save the day. Unfortunately, the four shinobi sent out to save the city get captured and Joe Musashi must save them and assemble his mighty sentai team before he can save Neo City. There is probably more (or maybe less!) plot in the instruction booklet but that is at home resting on a shelf and I cannot be bothered to wait and reference it. It’s a story about ninjas kicking evil’s ass – what more do you want from a game? Gameplay The gameplay is what makes this game shine. There are five playable characters of which you can switch between at any time as long as you have rescued them, ala Megaman ability switching. Here are the characters and their abilities: ![]() Name----------------Weapon-----------------Jutsu-----------------Ability Red (Joe Musashi)---Katana-----------------Earthquake-----------None Pink-------------------Bombs-----------------Light------------------Can walk on ceilings Yellow-----------------Chi balls---------------Invincibility-----------Can walk on water Blue-------------------Sickle------------------Whirlwind-------------Can swing on hooks Green-----------------Shuriken---------------Suicide----------------Can double jump You start, as the story suggests, with only Red unlocked and each stage you play unlocks another member of the team until the whole team is assembled and you start the final, ultimate stage. Each character is geared towards a certain stage (again, like Megaman) but the stages can be completed in any order with any character. The shinobi team share their life bar and their jutsu scrolls, so you cannot abuse the system by switching characters to take hits and you have to think about when and where you use your jutsus. Your life bar starts out at 4 pips but can be lengthened once in each stage from a specific box. You can only hold 9 jutsu scrolls and you lose all jutsu when you lose a life. ![]() The first section of the game consists of working your way through a some two-part stages complete with taking down the stage boss. There are four two-part stages, one for each missing shinobi. These stages are Highway (rescuing Pink), Valley (rescuing Blue), Woods (rescuing Green) and Harbour (rescuing Yellow). The gameplay of these levels are your standard action/platformer affair – kill enemies, traverse level. The twist (and subsequent fun) comes in using your unlocked shinobi to go about the level in different ways, sometimes finding new routes and hidden boxes (which will often hold the most sacred item, the life bar lengthener!). The second section of the game, Neo City, consists of a maze of small stages, all of which require characters to use their abilities to their fullest in order to not die like dogs. Hidden within the maze of stages are the four bosses of the previous stages and the only way complete the game is to complete the entire maze and defeat each boss in order to unlock the path to the final boss. Some of the stages in Neo City are awesome and some will make you RAAAGE (fuck you, plasma room) but all of them will really put what you learned in the earlier stages to the test. Graphics While you fancypants PS3 and Xbox 360 owners may think this game looks like ass, I would say the graphics for this game could easily be the pinnacle of 8-bit portable gaming. The little 2 second cutscene that it pulls out whenever you use a jutsu is awesome. The intro sequence of Joe Musashi bringing his sword down and cutting the screen is also pretty cool. The effects are spiffy and the sprites are sharp, well defined and well animated. The only problem I have ever had with this game’s graphics is the epilepsy inducing storm that you go through in the second part of the Harbour level and that is only bad if you’re playing it on a big screen (such as a TV or full screen on a monitor). This game looks especially great in it’s natural habitat – the Game Gear. Music If you have played Revenge of the Shinobi and you liked the music in that, chances are you’ll like the soundtrack in GG Shinobi too. Both soundtracks were composed by chiptune master Yuzo Koshiro, the man behind such awesome soundtracks as the Streets of Rage series, and they borrow elements from each other. The stage music for the first part of Highway is a remix of Joe Musashi’s theme from Revenge of the Shinobi, for instance. Generally the music in the game is awesome – favourites for me are Woods (part 2) and Neo City. Your ears will probably burn if you’re not used to old chiptunes but they would likely do that for any such aged game. Difficulty I’m probably not the best person to ask on the difficulty of the game because I’ve played it so much since my childhood that I know where almost every enemy and every attack is coming from. Of the first four stages, I would say the easiest is Highway and the hardest is Woods. Neo City’s stages are variable in difficulty but are generally harder than anything in the earlier stages The bosses, once you know their attack pattern, are fairly easy to defeat. As for the average difficulty of the game, I would either say medium or medium-hard, though Neo City has a few difficulty spikes (fucking plasma room) and is generally harder than the earlier stages. EDIT: The Hardcore Gaming 101 Shinobi article and my boyfriend both agree that the actual difficulty of this game is extremely hard. Maybe they suck or maybe I'm too practiced at this - you decide! As well as the medium-hard (or extremely hard, depending on your view) difficulty, there are a few faults in the game that can occasionally cause frustration. However, most of these are very nit-picky observations as opposed to game-breakingly bad problems. Some issues with the game I have:
This game is awesome and you should play it. If you like the Shinobi series, Power Rangers and other sentai shows and games, or the versatile gameplay of the Megaman series, you should definitely try it! I'm not saying the game is without faults... but it is pretty damn good. |
