Prologue: From the experiment logs of head scientist Fredrik Alexander, overseer of the secret detainee camp off the coast of Nova Scotia: Patient 65-G329: Once a journalist of the New York Times… She was known for speaking out against the administration. She was taken in the night. We planted a suicide note in her apartment and she was never seen again… She was put in Project Daedalus. She was bonded with an experimental suit of biomechanical armor. While at first a complete disaster, the suit has received several modifications since the initial bonding. Weapons have been added, and a cloaking device designed to allow to bearers of the armor to resemble normal people. It will still be many years before this is ready for official use. She is kept in constant surveillance. Patient 93-K926: A petty thief no one would miss. He was taken in the middle of a day in a dark alley. No cover up was needed. He was a drifter and no one would notice one less scumbag on the streets. He was brought into Project Echo. He was exposed to many mutagens in the hopes of increasing his awareness and his senses. The mutagens accomplished this in a very bizarre way. His eyes, nose and ears melted away and vanished. While he cannot hear, or see or smell, he can somehow see everything going on within two or three miles. He is kept in an isolated cell with one other. Patient 73-J538: A former journalist from the Associated Press. She ridiculed the army on how they were handling the crises’ in War on Terror. Taken in the Middle East. A cover story that she was abducted by Muslim extremists and was beheaded shortly after was implemented to prevent unwanted questions. She was inducted into Project Overman. She was locked in a room and exposed to large amounts of radiation and mutagens in hopes of pushing her to the next stage in evolution. The results were mixed. In some ways it was a success. She exhibits powers beyond that of a normal human. She can absorb energy and redirect it in whatever way she sees fit. But it was also a failure in the fact that she still retains her humanity. Patient 21-X512: A man the CIA accused of plotting to assassinate the president. He was taken in the middle of broad daylight. The press has not questioned the fact that he wasn’t seen again. He was brought into Project Akashic. He was tortured and pushed to the brink of death and then exposed with a multitude of mutagens, gene-therapies, and drugs in an attempt to push his mental capacity and induce an artificial genius. While it was a success, it was deemed a failure. Because while he was indeed pushed to a genius level, the process was too brutal. He died in the end. He’s dead… But he is somehow still moving around… His heart and all bodily functions have ceased, except his brain. His cerebral activity is higher than anything ever recorded. He is kept in isolation with Patient 93-K926. Patient 47-U392: A mass murderer and rapist. He was taken right before his lethal injection, and a substitute body was provided to fill his grave. He is the most dangerous resident in this camp. He has to be kept sedated at all times to prevent him from lashing out. He was placed in Project Ares. The project took the best aspects of all other experiments going on, and melded it together. The idea was to create the perfect soldier. And it was a success. But the process destroyed what was left of his sanity. He is kept in constant lockdown. Troops are stationed outside his cell with assault weapons loaded with explosive rounds. And despite the precautions, he has still slaughtered three guards. |

Chapter One: “Meal time scumbags,” the guard drawled as he slid Karl food into a corner of the cell. He always slid it into a random area every time. It was an order from Dr. Fredrik. He told all of the guards to slide it somewhere different to test Karl’s ability to sense things. The guards were to watch to see if his powers had progressed, stayed the same, or if they have worsened. Gary never ate, and he never picked it up for Karl… He just sat there like the living corpse he was. Karl picked up on it right away and walked over and snatched it off the floor. “Mmm… Meatloaf and potato chips. I hope the meatloaf isn’t person again.” “Even if it is, it’s all you scumbags deserve.” The guard snarled quietly. Another order. He was supposed to speak as quietly to test the hearing. He didn’t know the specifics about this man, but he was apparently supposed to be able to hear a penny drop on the other side of the building with very little trouble. It was why he was kept at the very bottom of the facility. And why he was kept in isolation with the walking corpse. “You know what?” Karl said as he chewed on some of the potato chips. “I hope your mother jaywalks in front of the White House and they bring her here. I hope they put her in the same room as that insane rapist.” The guard snarled and went for his gun. But as he did so, that damn corpseman looked at him, and his hand froze. The corpse didn’t do anything, but he had heard stories of what it could do. The last guard who tried to do anything involving firearms suddenly found that his hand felt like it was on fire. And he then proceeded to chew it off in a desperate attempt to keep the rest of his body from catching fire. There was nothing people could do to hurt the corpse, so punishing him for things like that was more or less pointless. “Whatever, scum.” The guard said quietly. “I’ll have a talk with the scientists, I’ll tell them to have fun with your experiments tonight.” He made a mental note to go talk to them. He probably wouldn’t, but it was fun making the faceless bastard panic. He flipped off the two prisoners and casually walked off. Minutes passed by in complete silence before Karl heard Gary’s voice resonate in his head. Is he gone? Gary asked silently. Karl nodded, “He’s gone. His six levels above us, and he’s on the toilet.” It was a mental image that Karl did not want, but it was one of the many curses that came with his abilities. There were pleasant ones though. Like being able to see the female guards shower eight floors above their cell. You had to take the good with the bad. And Karl preferred to keep thinking about the good. It was the only reason he hadn’t lost his mind yet. Good. Gary thought to him. Are the rest of the guards stationed on this floor on break? “Yes. Also, the guards on Jenny’s floor are asleep. And the guards on Holly’s floor are watching her eat.” The last one was a small problem. Holly was essential to escaping this hellhole. He and Gary could only do so much. Holly and Jenny were the real muscle behind this plan. I’ll take care of them. Gary assured him. But first I’ve got to alter the security cameras and programs throughout the facility. I don’t want them detecting us as we’re leaving. Karl chuckled and nodded. He was glad he was put in a room with Gary. It meant that he could escape with him. In a perfect world, Gary could breakout of this place by himself. He had been tricking the scientists for months; he made them believe his mental powers were growing slower than they actually were. The scientists believed the most Gary could do was create lifelike illusions in peoples minds within a general vicinity of ten feet, while in truth he could do much more and at an even greater range. But due to his body being physically dead, it was hard for him to move around. And while he could use his powers offensively, he was focused on interfering with all the security systems throughout the facility. So if a guard came by, he could shoot Gary deader, and end his escape attempt. But that’s where he, Holly, and Jenny came into the picture. Karl himself was the lookout. He was watching every guard in the building. Holly and Jenny were the muscle of the plan though. They were put in programs to design human weapons. Jenny’s biomechanical armor was equipped with dozens of different weapons. And while they were disarmed at the moment, once the escape started, Gary would reactivate them. She would make breaking out much easier. And while Holly didn’t have any weapons on her, her entire body was forged into a weapon. She absorbed all forms of energy, and could release it harmlessly, or violently. If given an ample power source, she could most likely completely destroy this building, and everything in an eight-mile radius. All right, the guards watching Holly suddenly came down with diarrhea. Gary thought to him. The door to their cell swung open suddenly, and Gary pushed himself up. It’s time. We need to get moving. Karl nodded, and helped him through the door. “What floor are the ladies meeting us on?” Eight floors up near the elevator shafts. Gary replied. Everything is operational now. Gary said in Jenny’s mind. But please don’t use the weapons unless there’s no other way around it. Gary pleaded. This needs to be fast, and clean. No one dies if it can be avoided. “Yeah, yeah.” Jenny growled. She flexed her hands to test out the hydraulics. Everything seemed to be functioning properly. She flicked through weapons on her HUD, and decided on the shotgun. She growled in pain momentarily as the palm of her right hand opened up. Also the feeling of the ammo being loaded up wasn’t a pleasant sensation either. No matter what Gary said, she was going to settle with her guards. She would settle with the fucking scientists too if it was possible. These people had ruined her life. She wasn’t going to let them get away with it. She activated the tracking device via the HUD, and followed the devices directions until she busted down the door to their sleeping quarters. They didn’t even wake up at the noise. She casually put her palm to the chest of the nearest guard and shot him point blank. The ammunition wasn’t birdshot. It was solid slug ammo. So when it hit someone, it’d do serious damage. At this range, it more or less blew him in half. The shot woke up the second guard, but he couldn’t move fast enough. She thrust her palm out at his face and fired again. The slug ripped the upper portion of his head off, and he fell to ground in a heap. If she could have spit on them, she would have. But she couldn’t remove the helmet. It was fused to her skin just like the rest of the bloody suit. So she settled for kicking the remains. She had to go down about four floors before she met up with the rest of them. She hoped guards would try to stop her. She had plenty of slugs to go around. Holly grinned as the guards watching her ran off to the toilet. Seconds after they vanished, the door to her cell swung open. Go now! Gary told her. And I’ll tell you what I told Jenny… The voice faded briefly, and then it came back as a growl, but I hope you will listen. Don’t use lethal force unless there is no other way. We need to leave as quickly as possible. Holly nodded, “Alright.” The presence of Gary immediately vanished from her mind. It was an odd sensation. It was like someone was looking over her shoulder. But it was to be expected… Gary was the biggest success in the facility. Even though he hid just how far he progressed. She stepped out of her cell, and immediately went to the power outlet near the guard’s desk. She waved her hand nearby and began drinking in the energy from it. She closed her eyes and relished the feeling of it all coursing through her. She didn’t stop absorbing energy until the air around her seemed to crackle with static electricity. As she went towards the stairs, she heard the bathroom doors close, and the two guards emerged from it. Their sighs of relief turned into cries of alarm. The two ran for the opposite door. There was an alarm right by the other side of it. They knew the specifics of her powers, and they weren’t willing to fight her if she was outside the cell that made it impossible for her to absorb energy. She couldn’t let them escape. If they set off the alarms, the entire escape would be ruined. Or at least made horrendously more difficult. Holly sighed, and then expelled some of the energy she had stored. The electricity rushed out of her and straight into the two men. When the energy slammed into them, they arched their backs and attempted to scream out in pain. But the energy paralyzed most of the functions in the body. The two guards continued to scream silently. And then they suddenly fell to the ground without a sound. She looked at them briefly, and saw that they were still breathing. The energy she hit them with just knocked them out. She shrugged; she really didn’t care what happened to them. She walked out the door and got to the stairs. She began jogging up the stairs. She had the shortest amount of floors to go by. She only had to go up two floors. As she ran up the stairs, she began absorbing energy as she jogged up. The more energy she had stored, the better. “Damn it, Jenny killed another guard.” Karl growled as they continued up the stairs. “She’s not even hiding the fact that she’s out.” The expression of Gary’s face would have been great for a zombie horror film. He looked like he was getting ready to rip someone’s face off with his teeth. Yes… Are there any more guards stationed near her current position? Gary asked. Karl was silent a few moments as he searched the floors. “No, there aren’t anymore. There aren’t any stationed on any of the floors she has to go through to reach us either.” Good. I shut down her weapons and overrode her tracker. I’ll activate them again after I’ve discussed with her the benefits of not slaughtering every guard we see. Gary replied. Has Holly run into any difficulties? Karl shook his head. “Other than the initial conflict with her guards, which couldn’t be avoided, she hasn’t run into any trouble. The guards she faced off against are in bad shape, but they are not dead.” Gary twitched his head. It was the closest thing he could do to a nod. Alright. Are there any guards near us? Most of my attention is being spent altering the security camera feeds. Or I’d check myself. Karl extended his senses again, and then shook his head again. “No guards. They haven’t even realized we’re here.” That took a bit of the angry zombie look off of Gary’s face. Very good. Karl continued searching out the building, and he froze. He heard screaming, gunfire, maniacal laughing, and walls being shattered. He focused his senses to that one location to see what was happening. Then he saw what was happening. He saw who was causing it. The skin of his face paled. “Gary. Are you interfering with the security of the entire building?” Yes, why? “Turn the security cameras of the western area of the facility back on. Now! Harris has broken out. He’s killed all of his guards, and now he’s making a break for it. He’s just blasting through walls.” Damn it. He must have been listening in on our plans over the past few days. Gary rumbled silently. The minute we initiated our escape, he must have activated his own weapons… Gary was quiet a moment, and then said, Yes, that is what he did. Looking through the experimentation logs, there was a small piece of the Akashic program in the procedure. He did what I did to Jenny, essentially. He paused a moment. Most likely he was turning things back on. All right. Security has been turned back to normal. Guards should be rushing there as we speak. “Which is good,” Karl said. “It means there’ll be nobody watching the front door as we waltz on out. And he can be used as a scapegoat when they learn that all the security was down.” Or so we hope. Now the guards know there’s an escape attempt going on. They’re going to be checking every corridor and every room for us. We have to escape quickly. All right, Jenny… Gary’s voice said wearily inside of her mind. There are problems. I’ll reactivate everything again. But bear in mind… If you continue killing indiscriminately, I will shut down all of your systems. Including your life support. The voice faded away, leaving her feeling nervous. Her life support was all that kept her truly alive. The experiments on her were brutal, and so to keep her alive, the first thing the scientists added to the biomech suit was a life support system. It was capable of sustaining her indefinitely. She didn’t know what the power source was, but the scientists told her the sun would go supernova long before the power source reached its half-life. She didn’t want to die. And she didn’t want to remain here. So as much as it angered her, she’d try not to kill anyone unless given a reason. So she flipped through the weapons displayed on her HUD and switched to the tranquilizers. She opened her tracker and scanned it for life signs. She didn’t see anyone near her, except for Holly, Gary, and Karl. They were nearing the rendezvous spot. She shrugged, and leaned against the wall and waited for them. She kept her eye on the tracker for any signs of trouble. It couldn’t hurt to be a bit more careful. Holly rounded the last corner and ran to the meeting place. She had stopped absorbing energy, and it was all she could do to not expel it from her body. The electricity coursed through her system. It hurt, but at the same time she felt more alive then ever. It was such an odd sensation… No wonder most of the people in Project Overman either died, or went insane. She kept a healthy distance from the woman in the biomech suit. Gary had mentioned that the woman in the biomech suit was part of the escape. It was all that kept Holly from overloading the biomech suit, and destroying it. “I take it you’re Jenny?” Holly asked carefully. The biomech woman turned her head, ‘Yes.” She answered with a voice that sounded like a computer trying to talk. “You’re…Holly?” This time the voice was that of a normal woman. “Sorry, I forgot to turn on the voice synthesizer.” Holly nodded, “Yes, I’m Holly.” She heard footsteps getting closer and louder, and spun around getting ready to blast apart whoever was coming towards them. But before she could let the energy go, Jenny put her hand on Holly’s shoulder. “Relax. That’s just Gary and Karl. There are no guards near us right now.” RUN! Gary shouted in their minds. Guards are keeping themselves masked off of Jenny’s tracker. They’re three floors up, and coming closer! Holly, and Jenny almost jumped. “The exit is about eight blocks away. We need to get there fast.” Jenny said. But as she said that, the elevator opened up and guards started to emerge. This isn’t good… Holly thought. There’d be no way around it, they’d have to kill a few of them. “There goes leaving the place peacefully.” Jenny said. She sounded very happy about it. |

There's not really much I can add in the way of critique. It's well-written, well paced, expo is kept to a bare minimum where it makes you wonder yet doesn't overwhelm. Unique concept. It's good. Please continue with this, Wirt. |

Chapter Two: Jenny flicked through her HUD, and turned the defensive mechanisms to maximum. She felt the energy build up and focus in front of her like a brick wall. She didn’t switch her weapons though. She wasn’t sure if Gary would still disable her systems if she used lethal force. Even before the guards had time to bring their weapons up, she held her hand out flat, and released a small barrage of tranquilizer darts from her fingers. She screamed silently inside of her mind as they left her body. It felt as if she was firing her bones at them. The darts struck a lot of the guards in the neck or chest. The fatigue toxins in the tips of the dart dropped them like rocks. It took a few seconds, but before they could react they passed out. Not all of them were so lucky though. Three guards fell down dead. The darts had hit them in the eyes, and continued into their skulls. They were killed on contact. Jenny couldn’t say that she was sad about that. Some of the guards didn’t get hit at all, but as they were about to open fire on them, Holly let out a shout and some of the energy she had absorbed came lash out at them. The electricity touched their guns, and suddenly they were thrown back into the elevators. The doors slammed shut, and Jenny could hear the cables that held the elevator in place snap. The elevator plummeted. Neither Jenny nor Holly heard it hit the bottom. “Nice shooting.” Holly said as they started for the exit. “Nice timing with the energy blast.” Jenny said in return. A few moments later, Karl stumbled into view with Gary leaning against him. “More guards are coming.” Karl said, “We have to get out quick.” “I thought you were altering all the security footage!” Holly said to Gary. I was. But then Harris escaped along with us. He had been listening to our plans for a while now. Gary thought to them all. A very large section of the guards have gone after him. But they had to move through Holly’s cell. And they came across the unconscious guards. They woke up and they told them what was had happened. “Damn it,” Holly grumbled. “I knew I should have hid them. But I didn’t believe I had much time, so I didn’t bother.” “There’s nothing to be done about it now,” Jenny said. “Let’s focus on escaping. Not on the problems.” She flicked through her HUD and pulled up her tracker. “How are they not showing up on my tracker?” Jenny asked curiously. Simply put, they’re emitting a weak, yet steady modified electromagnetic pulse field around themselves. It’s not enough to short out machinery, but it is enough to keep them off of all the tracking devices… Including Harris’. Gary told her. They’re taking every measure to counteract his abilities. This gives us a small problem, because Harris’ tortures and experiments are essentially modified versions of what they did to us. “It explains why there’s less electricity running through this area,” Holly said slowly. “I noticed it when I was charging up. I couldn’t draw in much energy to replace what I was releasing.” Karl nodded for a few moments, as they kept moving. “Everyone’s movement has been erratic for some time now… Same with noises. It’s like listening to a faulty stereo… I don’t know how they’re doing it, but I know it’s them.” Now that Jenny knew the problem, she could work around it. She looked at the options for tracking. There was tracking by lifesign, which was what she was currently using. She then switched it to electromagnetic fields. Suddenly her radar came alive again. About eighteen separate fields were approaching on their location. “We’ve got eighteen incoming.” Jenny said. “I can’t tell what they’re carrying though.” Karl was silent for a brief moment, “They’re armed to the teeth.” He murmured. “Fully automatic rifles. Explosives. Pistol sidearms.” He looked at Jenny, well not looked, more like he moved the front of his head to face Jenny. “You wanted a fight, here’s your opportunity. They’re not aiming to just incapacitate us. They’re going to go for the kill.” Seems there’s going to be no way around it. Gary thought to them. Jenny considered that a green light for using lethal force. She flicked through her HUD, looking at her choice of weapons. The guards were toting full-auto, so she needed something to match their rate of fire. The shotgun wasn’t going to cut it for this fight. It had power, but it was slow. She found something that would do the trick though. They stopped at a corner, and Jenny waited a few moments as the fields came into range. She waited until the last second, and then she turned the corner with her palm facing the guards. The center of her palm opened up again, but instead of firing out a slug, it let out a large stream of fire. She almost passed out from the pain. But her life-support filled her blood with adrenaline to keep her conscious. She didn’t want to watch as the guards in front of her burned to greasy black masses that no one could tell were real humans. But she didn’t have a choice. She deactivated the flamethrower after forty seconds of continuous blasting. She backed up, and then watched as one by one the guards fell down to the ground dead. Well… what was left of them at any rate. No time to waste! Move! Gary shouted into their minds. “No, no please!” A scientist screamed at him. He covered his head with his arms. Did he honestly think that was enough to protect him? Harris smashed his biomechanical fist into the man’s skull, and shattered it like a rotten watermelon. He turned around in time to catch a bullet in the shoulder. Harris hissed in pain, but a moment later it was fixed as good as new. He locked onto the guard who had shot him in an instant, and put a bullet in his throat. The guard tried to say something, but Harris had put a bullet straight through his voice box. He gurgled helplessly as Harris brought his foot down onto his head and shattered it like the scientist. He then dug his foot into the remains, like he was crushing a particularly hard cockroach. These people were pathetic. They screamed in fear, and didn’t even bother to celebrate that their greatest creation was a complete success. They had turned Harris into the perfect weapon… The perfect soldier. They feared they were too successful even. In the last twelve tests, they had done their best to kill him. All Harris did was laugh at their pathetic attempts. He turned, quickly flicked through his HUD for a new weapon, and then blew down another wall. According to the schematics of the building, he was only a few rooms away from the outer wall. And once he broke that down, he could be free to show the world what he had become. But before he left, he would kill everyone in his path. He wanted to show them how great of a success he had become. Holly kept moving, draining the little bit of power she could as she did so. She kept thinking of finally escaping… Anything to keep the images of her tortures, or the charred remains of those guards out of her mind. It had been unavoidable, true, but it still didn’t make the images any more pleasant. She stopped as Jenny held up a hand at the same time Karl did. “We’ve got trouble.” Karl said. “What kind of trouble?” She asked. Damn it, she was the only one who couldn’t see everything going on in a two-mile radius, so she was always left in the dark. “The rocket launcher, and RPG launcher kind of problem.” He said. “Jenny, how much abuse can your shields take?” “They tested it against rocket fire for about two weeks straight,” she said slowly. “The first test the shield shattered, and the armor was damaged by both the explosion, and the power surge from the failing shield system. By the end of the two weeks, I could take about two minutes of constant firing before my shields finally gave out.” “Do you think you can use that shield to absorb the impacts as Holly takes out the guards?” Karl asked. “I’d have to extend the shield out to protect a larger area,” Jenny said. “That cuts down on the strength of the shield…” She paused a moment, pondering it. “The shield will be able to take thirty seconds of firing before it shorts out.” Jenny turned her head to face Holly. “Do you think you can kill the guards in that short amount of time?” Holly chewed on her lip for a moment. Could she? She held enough energy to do so, sure. But it all depended... “How many men are we talking about here?” She asked. “Sixteen.” Karl said, “Standard two by two cover formation.” Damn, that complicated things quite a bit. But she could do it… She had a vague idea how to do so. “Yes, I can do it.” Holly said with a nod. “But it’s going to require most of the energy I’m storing up. But Jenny’s going to have to help me get out. After I use up the rest of this energy I’m going to barely be able to stand, let alone walk.” Jenny nodded. “If you can clear them out of our way, I can carry you out.” She walked started walking forward. “Let’s get this over with then.” Holly nodded, reaching and grabbing as much energy as she could. Jenny and Holly leapt out. Moments later, she heard a man’s voice yell “Fire at will!” The roar of rockets filled the air, but soon the deafening explosions they caused when impacting against Jenny’s shield drowned those out. Holly stepped up as close to the shield as she could and still be protected by it. She took a deep breath and then slammed her hands together in a clap that dwarfed the sounds of the explosions. Energy rushed out of her in a giant tidal wave. It swept the soldiers one by one, and fried them like bugs in a bug zapper in mere moments. Holly sagged, and nearly fell down from the amount of energy that took. But Jenny was there to keep her propped up. “Good job.” She said approvingly, “Any who didn’t die won’t be moving again for weeks. We can leave now.” Karl came up behind them with Gary in tow, and looked at the scene. “There are no more guards from beyond this point.” He said happily. Let’s go then. We’ve earned a vacation. Gary said wryly. “Well, well well…” Harris said grinning. “If it isn’t Doctor Alexander… I’m so glad I stopped by to see you.” The good doctor was shaking with fear. “Why are you h-here?” He asked. “You’ve already broken out? Why would you want to come back?” He reached for his cup, and he spilled more scotch on himself then he managed to drink down. The sight made Harris’ grin turn more into a leer. “Oh believe me, my dear doctor, I’m going to be leaving this place. But first, I thought I should pay a visit to the man who made me what I am today.” Harris said as he took a step closer. “I’m here to thank you.” Harris extended his senses and smiled. “It seems I’ll have some playmates when I leave.” He murmured to himself. “P-please, what do you want?” The doctor sputtered. “Well first, I was just going to have a bit of fun with you… But now I really do need something.” Harris said. “Information. Four fellow prisoners have escaped. I want all the information you have on them.” The doctor immediately pointed over to his computer, “There! It’s all in there. The password is hate2behere.” He stammered, he tried to steady his hand as he drank some of his scotch. “Thank you.” Harris said amiably. “Now for the fun.” Hours after the breakout was over, the surviving guards swept through the facility to check to see if anyone else besides those five escaped. No one else did. All the other detainees were still in their holding cells. When the guards went to report their findings to Doctor Alexander, they were greeted with a truly horrifying sight. The late doctor was bent over his desk. His clothing was gone, and all his skin appeared to have been flayed off. The damage was worst around his ass-end. It looked as if someone shot a cannon ball up him. His office was in complete ruins, except for his computer. The computer in his office was turned on. Four files were accessed… The four detainees that escaped. There was also a message on the screen, “The doctor was fun. But these four will be even better.” The guards weren’t sure which sight was more disturbing. The remains of the doctor, or the message. |
