At 7:00 AM I was playing my PS2. The game I was playing used 984 KGB & has an autosave feature. While it was saving, the game froze. After waiting two minutes, I decide to turn off my console. When I try to play the game, it says I have no save file for this game. So I turn it off again but this time I check the data on my memory card. It says its corrupted. It wasn't that big a deal since I started playing said game last night, so I delete the data. Prior to this, I had 55 KGB left and after removing the corrupted data, I somehow had only 84 when I should have had more(since deleting the data would remove the used KGB along with it). So I turn off the console, do the same thing, but this time when I check my memory card's data, it asks me if I want to format the memory card...so I do it. Now heres the problem. ALL my data is gone. Everything. I turn off the console three more times but nothing changed. Is my data really gone or can I somehow restore it? |

Anyway, I can honestly say that has never happened to me. The only systems that I've had trouble with deleted information is the N64 and SNES. I hope you can get it all back, though. ~ Kovu |

Learn to use a computer, honestly. Formatting something means it’s gone. Unless there’s some sort of spiffy memory card deleted file retrieval tool, your save games will be gone forever. Corrupted date from a game freezing while saving is quite common, though it shouldn’t have asked to format just from removed corrupt data. |

Formating usually means its gone. I accidently did it to one of my HDs containing a good bit of my anime. Got about half it back with Recuva but, for a memory card I think your pretty screwed unless you can magically put it in your PC. Which if it was a Wii/PS3 or such using an SD card, you would be able to. O wait, PS3s dont have card readers anymore.

It has happened to me when on my Gamecube with my Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Data. Just say no to formatting and delete the corrupt data and then turn off your system. It worked for me. (ofcourse, this was after I learned my lesson after the first time the data ruined all my other game data) |

Even I know what formatting means. It's gone forever. You'll have to play all the games you had to get all your data back.

D= Even Tiara knows what formating is. I've heard of this kind of thing for a Game Cube memory card, but not a PS2. I'm not too surprised. |

by the way, this happened BECAUSE you turned off your PS2 so rashly. probably with the switch in the back? that was a bad fucking idea. ALWAYS turn off your PS2 by holding the reset button until the screen goes off, and then if you feel necessary, flipping the back switch. only turn off your ps2 with that switch alone the most desperate of measures, and even then, try to work around it. |

I've only ever turned my PS2 off using the killswitch and I've never had a problem with data. The only one game that I've come into contact with that had dire data problems is Soulcalibur III, and I was very careful with that one. But yeah, formatting means to wipe the intended memory device clean of all residual data to make way for new data. I'm sorry, but there really isn't much you can do now. Unless they made a DexDrive for the PS2, and if you could find one even then, I'm afraid the data's gone for good. |

Either way, let this serve as a warning to everyone else who tires to format their memory cards again. |

Yes, it is a possibility to ruin your data using the killswitch. You know what else can happen? You can fuck up the PS2's circuit board. Why even risk it? Just hold the reset. |
