soooo why are people doing this exactly? Just because they can, or does it serve a purpose? I mean it can't e for energy, cause that thing has to use an assload so it can't exactly be efficient in that.

It's all about learning more about subatomic particles, the beginning of time, our existence, and pretty much the fundamental properties of matter. We don't know everything, and the more we know, the better we can do. You may say a lot of modern physics doesn't have much to do with real life, but quantum computing is becoming more and more pragmatic.

I see, so basically another desperate attempt from humans to satisfy their common need to understand our existence?

Yes. What's wrong with that?

It's important to know how the universe works, because it gives us better potential to manipulate it to our advantage.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with it, just clarifying it.

Also, Yzarc, I know zero about Physics so sorry if I might have misunderstood that part. I can see how it can be seen from that view, but I also feel it's majorly for the purpose of finding the facts of the origins of creation. Humans are too curious.

Basically, every time we learn something about how the universe works, we can figure out better ways to manipulate the world around us and create technology that only works towards humanity's advantage. To suggest that modern physics is irrelevant to the real world is horribly off.

And aside from that, how can you *not* be interested in how the universe works? Things like string theory fascinate the living hell out of me, and I don't even begin to have a clue about how it works or anything like that.

This is very true. If we did not have modern physics, there would be no computers, probably no electricity too.

TBH I always hated that kind of stuff. Earth Science was boring as hell to me, and I don't plan on taking Physics, or enjoying it if I do.

Oooh, this was on Mock the Week.

I doubt - or at least hope - that we aren't all going to die in the name of curiosity.

I just think that if this is going to end the world, they could have chosen a better place than Switzerland. If we all die because of something that happened in another country at least make it a cool one! D:

Poor soul. Physics is a tough major.

I seriously doubt we'll be killed by this collider.

Yeah, I'd make bets that it just destroys the equipment and we wave good bye to a crap ton of resources.

Wow. Just wow. When did the hell we get the technology for something like this? :Psyduck:

And if we do die because of this at least it's for a good cause and not something shitty like a nuclear war.

I hope it works out well. I still think, and will continue to think, that it's a waste of resources until it actually gets results though.

@Laharl: this thing's been happening for ages, it's had to go through a couple of lawsuits because people try to sue for potential damages (you know, humanity's obliteration and all that kind of thing). But it seems it got through in the end.

I also find modern physics really interesting, but it's one of those things I could just never quite get my head around.
jesus somebody get onto msn
