I guess we'll know when we all get crushed into oblivion that they got it to work.  That's what I thought I saw, though, that it hadn't happened yet. Hence why my original thought given the potential consequences was "hell no." Why even take that chance, regardless of how small it is? This isn't a trivial matter -- this is all known life in the universe going splat, see ya later, thanks for the ride into the halo of darkness. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that scientists believe the chances of it happening are minute -- but is the knowledge of whether the Big Bang Theory is true or false so important that taking any risk with, literally, the fate of the planet, at stake is even remotely acceptable? I say no. Of course, I'm sure that I'm missing something really important...but given what (little) I do know, my inclination is not at all worth the risk. |

It's not that scientists think the chances of destroying the world are small. It's that they think they're nonexistent. Everyone's just making a big deal out of it because of the sharp increase in anti-intellectualism. No one wants to trust experts for some reason. The moral of the story is this: No scientist will tell you that a black hole could be created by forcing two subatomic particles to collide with high energy. A journalist might, because apocalyptic stories seem to be all the rage, but that doesn't make it true. |
