Sort of a spin off of Nick's topic, except not specific to particle accelerators. How much longer do you think humanity has on this world, or how long 'till we go extinct, or however you wanna look at it? And, moreover, how do you think we'll go out? I've noticed after talking to a lot of people, that they have a lot of confidence in humankind. But the more you really think about all the things that could happen, both that we have control over and otherwise, the more you really wonder how much longer there really is. There are certainly a lot of natural "disasters" that we'd probably be able to weather through better than species before us, like a climate or magnetic shift. But what about huge ones? What about another meteor like the many that caused global extinctions before humankind? And what about the Yellowstone Caldera? We're due for another explosion from that bad boy within the next 100,000 years. And how long will our resources hold us out? We already know oil is running low, but there are many more resources we use. Water, for one, is becoming less and less. Drinkable water, that is. Aquifers don't last forever and a lot of places, particularly the western U.S., are already suffering water shortages. And then there's the possibility of humankind just destroying itself. I don't personally think this is much of an issue, and I certainly hope we know when to say when, but I thought I'd bring it up. Anyway, yeah. Debate. |

I think that one day, Humankind will end itself - probably indirectly, though. But I still think that's waaaay off, so I'm not going to worry about it. |

Well, my correspondant S. Palin tells me that the forces of darkness and abortion are hard at work bringing the environment down through purely non-human-related means. Oh, and according to the Aztecs, if memory serves, the world will be ended by Earthquakes on 22 December 2012. It will be SO lol when oil runs out. You'll see fat people riding bikes and stuff. There's always WWIII if everything else fails, but alas, it seems we're gradually moving away from another prime opportunity to really fuck everyone up. |

Confidence in humankind? Not particularly. I've just grown to the fact, that possibility of total Earth shattering apocalypse could technically happen at ANY given moment, believe you me. Most people don't take into account the fact that GALAXY SHATTERING PHENOMA happen on a daily basis, and are completely unpredictable to human sciences. Oh sure, we can grasp why they happen, but not until after it's already happened. Quite true. A little scary? Don't shit your pants over it, we're more likely to induce nuclear holocaust before, let's say, a Gamma Ray Burst. By the way, we're overdue for a reversal of Earth's magnetic field. |

Greth is right. Galaxies implode, explode, collide and cease to exist on a basis more daily than we can probably imagine. The Universe is chaotic on a cosmic scale. ![]() Lol. We're also quite overdue for the far more common catastrophe of a meteoric impact. |

Mm. When you think about it, earth is an extremely insignificant planet in the grand scheme of the universe. To us, it seems like we're extremely significant. I mean, it's one of the few, if only, planets that has life, and intelligent life at that! But that's only from the perspective of the living. We're biased, so we're obviously going to think life is this huge significant thing. But the universe doesn't actually care. Who knows when our galexy will collide with another galexy? Not only do we have to worry about physically crashing into a supergiant star, but there's the matter of dark matter throwing every single think we've come to understand off balance. It's easy to say "It won't happen to me, so I don't care," but isn't it at least interesting to think about how close we are to extinction at all times? |

^This....but wasn't it the Mayans who said we'll die in 2012? I don't remember no Aztecs. Anyway, I can see it happening. Us being our own downfall, I mean. And, I don't mean to offend anyone when I say this(I know some of you don't beleive in god), but I think God is going to be so fed up with our crap one day and something big will happen. Something so strange or inexplicable. .....that or that stupid collider shit ends us all. You know they just did it for the lulz. ps. If something really strange happens....I hope it isn't so instantanious....I like the idea of zombies. The slow ones, not the dawn of the dead imarun25fuckingmilesanhour ones. >__>; |

Nobody said it isn't going to happen. The Earth will end someday, that is a universally accepted fact. Just "when?" is the question of concern here, and a little less so, "how?" *galaxy, btw. Good shit though, Yzarc |

Apparently, the Mayan thing is simply the ending of one cycle of their calendar and they didn't get a chance to make a new one because their empire collapsed, or somesuch. It implies massive change, not neccesarily the end of the world.

I've always felt that getting worried about these sorts of things isn't worth the trouble it causes. To a lesser extent, being concerned a little about environmental change is a good thing, but something like a giant meteor or Yellowstone going boom - you shouldn't be preoccupied with these things. There's likely to be little that one could do to stop them, or if it IS possible then spending billions of pounds on protecting against extremely rare occurrences is still a pretty silly notion - at least, until there's urgent signs that they're about to happen. My opinion on the matter? I feel that we're quite a resilient species. Although it could take a long time to recover from certain disasters, I believe that we could weather a lot out. |

No one's saying we should be worried about them. Even the best geologists don't even know how to tell when a volcano is about to explode, let alone how to stop them. (Well, really, they can't be stopped) We're just talking about likely ways for human extinction. Also, imo, we're far less resilient than you think we are. The only thing that'll keep us alive in the event of a huge disaster is the fact that we're all over the earth. But at some point, and I'll be willing to bet not too far from now, earth is gonna die, a huge disease is gonna wipe out humanity (AIDS will probably become airborne and white people won't be immune to it anymore) |

One interesting theory I heard was about genetic deterioration. ![]() At the ends of every chromosome is a cap of proteins that keeps it together. As generations progress, the hypothesis is that the proteins will break down and leave the DNA unprotected. This makes the DNA strand prone to corruption, which is usually disastrous in some way. The proceeding generations will become weaker in any of a variety of ways and succumb more easily to outlandish scenarios; UV ray poisoning, oversensitivity to common toxins in the air, inability to metabolize, until the last generations rarely make it to birth. Then humanity will perish like a flame at the end of its wick.

Hey that happened in Stargate. But it was because of a fatal error in the cloning genome, because the race lost the ability to reproduce due to said error in the cloning genome. |
