At the ends of every chromosome is a cap of proteins that keeps it together. As generations progress, the hypothesis is that the proteins will break down and leave the DNA unprotected. This makes the DNA strand prone to corruption, which is usually disastrous in some way. The proceeding generations will become weaker in any of a variety of ways and succumb more easily to outlandish scenarios; UV ray poisoning, oversensitivity to common toxins in the air, inability to metabolize, until the last generations rarely make it to birth. Then humanity will perish like a flame at the end of its wick. Just need to go the Ever17 route with that and create a virus that keeps those protein caps going full force.
