So, I tend to stay out of this forum, because I don't really like to argue much, but I wanted to get an opinion from you guys. Here it is:

I am a Christian, but I don't happen to be one locked in the ideas of western culture, and try to be generally accepting of differences in people. Needless to say, I have my shortcomings, as do we all, but I'd like to think I'm making an effort to have a positive effect on the people around me, as my religion outlines that I do. There are others that don't really follow these what we're called to do as Christians, however. Those are the "fire insurance" Christians that have done the one thing that supposedly makes them followers of Christ, but have left it only at that, and let their ignorance of other people alone such that it dictates how they live the rest of their lives. To me, it looks like these people are the loudest to the unbelieving world, for they get the most attention. As a result, it seems to me that the whole religion of Christianity takes the blow from these people's actions. Is anyone else feeling that way?

Discuss.

I'm not Christian. However, I was raised Catholic, and have (and still do) attend Catholic school my whole life. With the exception of a few agnostic/atheists, pretty much everybody I know is Christian or Catholic. I have seen the type of people that you talk about, but honestly, it should be the least of your problems if you are worried about Christianity's reputation. The crazy, creationist, arrogant Christians that exist in certain parts of this country are far more troublesome.

In case you were wondering, I'm an agnostic now as opposed to Christian/Catholic. My defection from religion has nothing to do with the people who follow it though.

I'm more of a Humanist then anything. Most Humanist's have a very simple view on Christianity and Christians alike. "If what he said is good, and so much of it is absolutely beautiful, what does it matter if he was God or not?"

I'm a Catholic in a predominantly Protestant part of the country, but I have no quarrel with the people. Just disagreements.

There are those who preach that all you need for "salvation" is to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior. Well, that's all well and good, but you kind of need to live as Christ exemplified. That's what being a follower of Christ is all about. "Fire insurance Christians." Bahaha. Clever.

A zen koan put it quite beautifully:

However well of Jesus Christ
You talk and sermons preach,
Unless He lives within yourself
He is beyond your reach.

this

and I know one-word posts are objected to here, but...perfectly summed up.

Well, one exception -- I'm a nondenominational (Protestant, I suppose, since it's non-Catholic Christianity) in a primarily Catholic area (Southern Louisiana is probably the only Deep South area that's not predominantly Protestant). But that's semantics; same thing applies.

...By the way, I know what you mean when you say "crazy, arrogant" Christians, but I don't see how creationism is a negative. There really isn't anything downright conclusive about the creation of the universe in any direction -- just circumstantial evidence and odds with which to idly toy. Either of the main sides of that argument require leaps of faith.

For the record, I understand what type of people you are referring to, and I'm decidedly apathetic toward how the world came into existence. I'm just saying that creationism isn't on its own a negative quality.

I'm not religious at all, and never plan to be, but I'm generally open-minded to it. I have more doubt in the existence of Satan than in God, to be honest.

My U.S History teacher in high school was religious and got like a 100% approval rating on our website lololol. Which is nothing surprising; if he grew a beard he probably could even look like Jesus. :NomNomNom:

@Simon: Regarding creationism, I was referring to people who deny the existence of intelligent design and think the Earth was brought into existence 5000 years ago. The Christians who blatantly deny science instead of realizing that ID and evolution can coexist.

I'm agnostic, but was raised atheist. Religion has never been part of my life, and there was, I'll admit, a time when I was very intolerant of anyone who was religious. Time and experience have taught me otherwise, and now I'm more of the persuasion that everyone has an answer to their life. For some, that answer is religion, for me it isn't. Everyone's free to have their beliefs, and I'm not going to try to interfere with them or disrespect them.

Now I'm also of the belief that there is always a point where things go too far. People like Pat Robertson and Fred Phelps exemplify exactly that. (For the uninformed, the former hosts some televangelist news program and has said that Florida's hurricane problems have been due to them allowing a gay pride parade in Miami, and the latter is the "God hates fags/God hates Sweden" guy.) And I still have trouble disassociating the image of people like them from the 90%+ of America who aren't cowboy-hatted, gun-toting bigots. So yes, I do agree that those people are giving Christianity a bad reputation to the rest of the world.

Just from an outsider's point of view, doesn't the entire concept of "screaming "YOU'RE GOING TO HELL AND GOD HATES YOU UNTIL YOU REPENT" to the masses" contradict "love thy neighbor" and the concept of a heavenly Father? That's how I define "taking it too far", when one's "beliefs" involve degrading other people and telling them they're hated.

Christians don't have to like the choices some people make, but that's one thing. Saying that natural disasters are divine punishment both makes you and our belief look bad, and opens the floodgates to that logical fallacy of "God is on my side, not yours."

This is surprising, Asvel. I thought your mother was a hardcore Christian cut from the Southern Baptist cloth. :|

Religiously and scientifically, evolution and ID can coexist. One can believe that while the Earth has formed over millions of years, the gradual progression of its creatures into man was guided by God. However, the Christians that I believe are idiots are the ones who claim scientifically and religiously that there was no evolution, and that the exact date in which the earth was created can be determined.

Hopefully I'm still not confusing you?

What Phil is saying is that intelligent design and evolution are not mutually exclusive.

Then there are the people that rail against the geological record that goes back some twenty-four billion years or something, someone check that number.

Oh, I got that. It's just he referred to those who deny intelligent design and those who deny science as the same people.

If that's all, no problem. >____________>
