Chapter 1 The two stood in complete silence on the rooftop, snow gently falling in front of them. Sheltered in the overhang of the roof above them, they simply watched the snow layer itself upon what felt like everything in the world. The man bore tanned skin, a little whiter now that it was winter, and black hair hidden under his woolly cap. The thick winter jacket belied his strong figure, and the scarf around his neck was an effeminate pale pink. His brown eyes gazed out through the woods behind the house. "So that's it?" A man began, turning his head to one side and biting his lip. Allowing her to see his lip trembling made him seem weak, he thought. "...huh." "I won't say I'm sorry, because I'm sure you won't believe me." The woman spoke now that the icy silence had been broken. She, too, wore typical winter attire, but much more fashionably than her counterpart: Fuzzy Earmuffs, woolly cap, long winter coat with large buttons, fuzzy gloves and the like. Unlike the man, no emotion shone in her voice at all. She seemed as cold as the ice forming at their feet. Slender and beautiful, with long red hair, pale green eyes and skin only slightly less fair than the moon. "It's been five years. Five years..." "Hey, I'll admit to four of those years being good." sighingly softly, she stuffed her mitten-clad hands into her coat. "I really thought you might've been the one." "What went wrong?" he turned to her, forcing his eyes to be as steely as they could. "You stopped listening. You took me for granted. You stopped caring.". The reply felt like a dagger in his heart. "I don't believe you actually love me anymore." "I...why couldn't you just've told me?" "I tried." She turned to him slowly, tears now in her eyes. "God knows I tried." "I...but I didn't know that's how you felt." "I couldn't have been plainer about it. You just turned into so much of an asshole...I just can't...you just didn't listen." she felt a tear roll down her cheek as she absently touched her arm. "The hell's that supposed to mean? When and how did I become an asshole?" the man demanded angrily, his hands balling into fists. "Case and point as to how you didn't listen." she sighed sadly, "and clearly how you still don't" "Listen, I...can't we talk about this?" "I didn't want to talk this time. I just wanted to tell you-" "-But-" "-I just wanted to tell you that...I don't love you anymore. I don't see a future for us. Like I said, earlier on, I thought you were the one...but you've changed...and I can't see myself with what you've become." "You're not giving me a chance to redeem myself here-" he felt his voice choke under the strain of emotion. Luckily for him, she cut in: "-I can't have this conversation anymore. Not here, not now." With that, she stepped back in through the window. The man watched as she started to disappear into the house. "Goodnight Soja." "You know what?" Soja's hands trembled slightly "You know what? Fuck you Crysta." Her eyes darted upwards, glaring at him angrily before slamming the window shut. For a moment, he looked around, noting only offhandedly that the snow was piling up higher. He sat down on a nice clean patch of roof and buried his face in his hands. * * * Snowy mornings usually brought about happy thoughts for University Students. It usually meant "stay home, don't go to class. Free day". Soja Aurion, however, found himself waking up to said snowy morning still on the roof of his house. Luckily he had been under an overhang, so the snow hadn't piled up on him...but it had still been absolutely freezing. Slowly, a window just down a ways opened up, and a young man stepped out onto the roof in pajama pants and nothing else. Cigarette in mouth, he stretched, despite the snow, and yawned loudly like an idiot. After a few moments of stretching, he lit his cigarette and stood with his hand in his pocket. "Aren't you cold?" Soja asked. "I'd ask you the same thing" the voice was melifluous and soft, in a gentle baritone. It matched the fairly slender figure of the man in just pajama pants. His shoulders were fairly broad, but his body was nicely defined, and naturally so. "You knew I was out here?" Soja felt a strange mixture of hurt and anger sweep over him. "I came out for a cigarette when I came home last night. You were asleep." the man shrugged "And you didn't fucking let me inside?" "You were asleep." "You could've woken me up." "Or you could've let me know you were out here by knocking on my window. Or you could've called me on the phone. Texted me. Something." "Have some sympathy, Kamai, I just got dumped." "Ah, explains why you were up on the roof, then." Kamai looked particularly uninterested in Soja's plight. "Dude, you're cold." Soja growled. "You're the one being stupid. I'm just letting you do your thing. If you'd really wanted to come in, you would've found a way to. Clearly, you wanted to be out on the roof, freezing your ass off. If that's your choice, then that's your choice. Don't you dare blame me." Kamai crouched down, brushing his shaggy black hair out of his face before taking another drag of his cigarette. "...asshole" Soja grunted and walked over to his friend. "I don't even know why I signed the lease on this place with you." "We all signed the lease together. It's a six-bedroom house. You're stuck here at least for another year." Kamai sighed, putting out his cigarette. "C'mon inside. Go warm yourself up or something." His voice didn't belie any concern, but Soja saw that the grey eyes did. "Hey...thanks man." "My pleasure." There was a silence as the two men clambered into the house through the window. "You do that every morning?" Soja asked. "Every morning. No matter what" laughed Kamai as he put on a shirt. His skin had apparently turned blue at a few places. "I have a loyal following too." He shivered a little as he wrapped himself in a blanket. "Following? People do that shit with you?" "Oh goodness no." Kamai dismissed the thought with a wave of his hand "I meant peepers. Onlookers, gazers, et cetera. They think all sorts of things about it too. They tell me too, you know. One admires my freedom of spirit, one wishes they looked as good as I did, evidently. From a few glances, I know I've been used as fuel for the masturbatory fires, etc." "You do it to show off?" "Hardly. I do it because it's what I do. What people think is what they think. It's never really stopped me before. I'm not even that attractive anyways, so don't think it's an egotistical bastard thing." "Right...right...Crysta home?" "Your ex?" Soja winced. He had forgotten how blunt and forthright Kamai could be. "She went to class. To think, she braved this weather to go to a class where no one else will be just to avoid you. Give her some space, okay?" "How?" Explosive anger flared up almost immediately. "How the hell am I supposed to do that when we share a room?" "Well, technically you don't. She has her own room in the basement, just in case she needed her space." "Oh right...I forgot about that." Soja sighed, sitting down at Kamai's computer chair, taking off his big winter jacket. "What do you think I should do?" "Just give her some space. If it's going to work out fine and you get back together, it's all well and good, but if you don't, oh well." Kamai shrugged. "Fuck dude. She was the girl I was gonna marry." He buried his face in his hands again, clenching tightly at his temple with his fingertips. The man across him looked as if he were about to speak, but quickly changed his mind, resting back into his bed. "I...fuck..." "Go cry in your own room." Kamai's voice floated in from under the covers "Come back and talk to me whenever you're done." "Fuck you Kamai!" Soja yelled "Look, crying in front of me isn't gonna solve anything." the bed rustled a little "I'm not really good at the 'oh, oh, there, there, everything's gonna be okay' stuff. Go cry in your own room by yourself, where you'll feel better, or go find someone else to cry on." "Are you giving me the cold shoulder? Dude, you're supposed to be my friend." "And since we're friends, you know by now that I hate seeing people cry, especially my friends. I never know what to do. Come back and talk to me when you're done with the tears." "Asshole" Soja grumbled. He grabbed his coat, kicking over Kamai's chair in a pitiful attempt at spite, then stormed out, slamming the door behind him. After a moment, Kamai's head peeked out from behind the covers. Slowly scanning the room, he absently noted the toppled chair before snuggling back into his sheets, into one of his best kept secrets. He wrapped his arms around a shaggy brown stuffed dog. A tear rolled down his cheek, leaving a messy little spot on his pillow. "I am what I am, I suppose. At least I'm honest, right Gidger?" |

Don't worry, they'll probably get back together. It is called Mend. Romance isn't really my thing, but I'll try and keep up with this. Btw, it might be nice to introduce names as soon as we meet the characters and not wait for several paragraphs. |

Chapter 2: Kamai brushed some snow off of his shaggy head as he walked into the student union building, followed closely by a girl with dark red hair. She was a very pretty girl, with freckles and thin, black-rimmed glasses. Along with her turtleneck and long, plain skirt, she wore her hair up in a bun accompanied by a fairly stern expression. Kamai often chided her for the sexy librarian look, which usually led to him getting slapped. He didn't mind. "So how's Soja taking it?" she asked, peering at Kamai "And why do you keep that awful...beard...thing...if it just bothers you?" "Well I like the look of it. Makes me look older, and more sophisticated without looking like a tool. I rather like the effortless good looks of a movie star. Better than your librarian get-up, Hollie" Smack. Kamai merely shrugged it off. "Soja's taking it in the way he usually takes bad news. "So chairs are being kicked over?" Hollie sighed, adjusting her glasses back onto her face "Trash Cans too." laughed Kamai in reply. "You're laughing at your friend who just got dumped?" the red-head looked quite indignant "You're a monster" "I just think it's funny is all. Chairs and Trash Cans are clearly not metaphors for Soja and Crysta...so I don't see why he kicks them over." "..." Hollie looked absolutely nonplussed "You're fucking weird. I honestly don't know why I hang out with you." "Because I'm sexy" Kamai turned to her, plastering a fake seductive look on his face. "Because you're sexy" Hollie rolled her eyes in reply, her voice dripping sarcasm. "Damn right" As they approached the food court, they started to part ways, then stopped. "I thought we were going to the Subway?" Hollie blinked "You went on for about fifteen minutes about the veggie patty sub! You were gonna get three footlongs for the price of two!" Her confusion seemed to swiftly turn to anger. "Oh, I changed my mind. I saw the sign for Taco Bell, and I thought 'Man...I could eat like 10 bean burritos for the price of 6." "The last time you ate an entire 'Grande Combo', you threw up for an hour straight." Hollie sighed "You'd think you'd've learned your lesson." "Nope." came the reply before Kamai disappeared through a crowd of people. Hollie rolled her eyes and followed him, clutching her messenger bag to her side. After a moment, she caught up to him, and he immediately changed directions. "What now!?" Hollie raised her arms in exasperation. "GENERAL TSAO'S TOFU!" Kamai yelled as he vanished again. Hollie felt her teeth grinding together in the most unhealthy way. As she took a step forward she distinctly heard his voice: "Aw man! Bagel with veggie cream cheese!" followed swiftly by: "Oh! Subway! Three Subs for the price of two! Sold!" She stopped dead in her tracks, gently placing her hand to her forehead and kneading her temples gently. "I'll kill him." She muttered dangerously to no one. Five minutes of Kamai changing his mind later, they finally settled on Subway, and found a table by a window overlooking the lake. Hollie sat down, mildly exasperated and glared at Kamai "This is why we never get lunch together." "Why?" he blinked, honestly confused. "You're the calmest person I know, until we get to a place with food. Then, and only then, can you not make up your mind." "I can make up my mind." Kamai did his best to look hurt. "Look at what you ordered: Two spring rolls, a bean burrito, a 6 inch veggie patty sub, a bowl of broccoli cheese soup, and a strawberry smoothie." "A meal fit for a king." a lopsided looking smile appeared on his face. "And see? I did make up my mind. I decided on everything." "Why am I friends with you?" Hollie rolled her eyes again. She found that she only really rolled her eyes when she was around Kamai. "You roll your eyes a lot. They'll roll right out of your face if you aren't wearing glasses." her friend stated matter-of-factly. "If that ever happens, remind me to strangle you." she growled, scooping into her beef and vegetable stew. They ate in relative silence, mostly because Kamai was too busy stuffing his face to talk. Hollie watched Kamai as he went about his meal. She sighed for a moment, feeling bad for questioning their friendship the way she did, even if it was just in jest. If it hadn't been for him, she'd still be quite the wallflower. He was really the only person who'd ever taken any notice in her, ever since her days in grade school. She just liked to watch people, and usually, Kamai did too. Even when he was being annoying about food, she decided, he was still a good friend to her now. "How long have we been friends now, Kam?" she asked "Three years. Since your first day of college." he replied, spitting out a little bit of his spring roll. The two heard the tiny splat sound of food hitting the table, and they both slowly looked down. They looked up again at one another, eyes meeting. For a moment, and just a moment, Kamai looked terribly sheepish as he picked up the food crumb and placed it inside his tray. "And that's why you don't talk with your mouth full. Honest to god, I swear I'm like your mother sometimes." "I would rather have liked a librarian for a mother." He had finished his meal, and had resumed his 'aloof' look. "I'd have some serious issues though, you know. I have a thing for librarians, and for mothers, and librarian mothers especially...so if my mom were a librarian mother, I'd be all fucked up." Hollie stared at him blankly before picking up her tray "C'mon, let's go smoke." The two dumped their food trays on a nearby food tray cart of sorts and strolled out to a little fountain plaza outside of the Student Union Building. Finding a seat on a bench, they both lit up cigarettes and sat back, watching people pass by. "Ready for the Lit test?" Kamai asked quietly. "Absolutely not." she replied, equally quietly. They spent the rest of their cigarattes in silence. * * * After class that evening, Hollie found herself back at home with her roommate, Dragon Sniper, or DS. The two had plopped their bookbags behind the couch and turned on Finding Nemo, for lack of anything better to do. Subsequently, Hollie found herself losing interest in the film as her thoughts drifted over to Kamai. "Hey DS? Did you ever notice how Kamai has like...two personalities?" Hollie asked suddenly. "Two?" she snorted "Kamai's got more personalities than your average lunatic. He's a pisces." "What's that got to do with anything?" Hollie raised her eyebrow. She had figured that because DS and Kamai had been friends since childhood, DS could shed some more light on it. "Pisces are weirdos. They do what they feel like, and they feel everything 100%." "So...what you're saying is..." "Kamai does generally what he wants. It's just that whenever he wants something, he wants it with his entire being. Whether it's lunch, or a person, or a new book...whatever. Those are bad examples." DS's bright blue eyes twinkled a little as she spoke of her dear friend. Although shortly thereafter, a little impish streak appeared in them. "Why? Do you have a crush on him?" "I don't think so." the redhead rested her head on her chin "I really don't think so. I mean, I see him all the time, and so do you, because we all live together." "Does Hollie have a crush on Kamai?" the two turned their heads, looking back over the couch. A young man had entered the room. He took off his hat, revealing his matted, curly brown hair. His cheeks were rosy from the cold, and that merely accentuated his fairly pointy features. "Shut up, Nick" Hollie threw a pillow at him. Not because he insinuated that she had a crush of sorts, but rather because he was Nick. "She was merely pointing out that he's got, like...fifteen personalities." DS spoke up for her friend, providing a little cover. She and Hollie exchanged secret glances of acknowledgment of this fact. "Oh. Well yeah. I don't really know which one's really him either. I really hope it's not Food Court Kamai." "Or Horror Movie Kamai." DS chipped in happily. "Or Heartbreak Kamai." Nick grinned. "Maybe..." Hollie raised her hand, as if she were in class "Maybe it's all the same Kamai. I mean, we're all different during different times, aren't we? Isn't that just natural? To react to different things differently?" "So what you're saying is that Kamai has many moods, not personalities?" Nick raised an eyebrow "Sounds like blasphemy to me." "Really he's just a pisces. His moods are much more noticable. They might as well be personality" DS offered sagely. "I really don't think that's quite it." Hollie placed a finger on her chin "I just have to put my finger on it." "Whatever. Kamai's always been good people. If anything, I don't think he's ever lied. Ever." Nick threw his backpack on the pile and plopped down onto a beanbag chair next to DS. "Ooh! Finding Nemo!" Hollie sat in silence for the rest of the film, but it felt like it was simply washing over her. She simply let her thoughts entertain her. Her reverie was broken when she heard a loud thud upstairs. The three looked at each other, panicked, before bolting upstairs all in a row. Soja was laying facedown on the floor, just outside of his room. On the carpet beneath him, a stain appeared underneath him, slowly seeping across the carpet in a large patch. "Well...shit." blurted DS. The other two merely watched on in dumb silence. Chapter 3? (Writer's Block sucks) "...Soja...?" Hollie finally managed to say something, considering the prostrate, possibly dead, friend lying before them. "...Soja...?" Her voice came out trembly and sing-songy, unsure and utterly nervous. "The liquid accumulating on the carpet..." Nick stepped forward slightly "If that's blood...we'll need a lot of resolv-OOF!" He reeled over, DS having elbowed him heavily in the gut. Gingerly, she stepped over and knelt down, dipping a finger in the quickly spreading stuff and licking it. She pulled a face, waggling her finger in front of her. "It's just whiskey." she frowned "So I guess we'll need that Resolve after all." A gentle sigh of relief eased over the hallway, now that the trio was breathing again. "That's the shortest red light I've ever seen!" the tv grumbled loudly, causing Nick to snap his head back towards it. "Whoops, left the movie on!" he grinned awkwardly as he sped back into the living room. Exhanging glances briefly, the two girls hefted Soja up, muttering about useless men, and gently/not-so-gently shoved him back into his room. DS, grumbling as she went, set off to the kitchen to look for the carpet cleaner, while Hollie dragged Soja into his room. "...n-...no." the unconscious one muttered. "imnenpoof. Grrrrappa. Shmnumnumnum." "Of course, honey." Hollie's tone was flat and unamused. "Mmmrooomba." "No, Soja, you've had enough to drink." "mmmmennneeenneeetorrp....mrrrnumrrrmenur...." this time it sounded whiny and childish, as if a baby hadn't gotten its candy. "No means no, sillyface." Hollie managed to get Soja into an upright position. She removed his now alcohol soiled shirt and tossed it into his laundry bin. With a little grin, she snapped her fingers. Courtesy of DS, a bright pink flowery-patterned bathrobe appeared in her hands instantly. Helping her drunken charge into his new outfit, she attempted to heft the man onto the bed. She was met in turn with resilience in the form of dead-weightedness. "mmmmmrreaaannmmuimumm. Nrmmamaumeumumemr...." Soja appeared to have an opinion. "Overruled, Soja." Hollie shook her head. "Get into the bed." "Mrrrf" he grunted resolutely in reply. "Fine. Stay there." She grabbed a pillow off of his bed and placed it on the floor. Immediately he slumped towards it. With a long, low sigh, followed by a little raspberry sound, Soja teetered, and teetered, and finally settled into the pillow on the floor. "There's a good boy. Sleep now. It's only...you know...5 in the afternoon." She rolled her eyes, leaving him be. "He's asleep now." She reported to Nick and DS, who had popped in Troy now that Finding Nemo was over. Just as soon as Hollie settled down back into her seat on the sofa, and the opening speech was playing on the telly, the apartment door creaked open to reveal Kamai...who was essentially naked. The trio remained speechless for a moment, sizing up the situation of their other roommate. He stood there, wearing the same blank, nonchalant and almost uncaring default expression he usually wore, and a tangerine coloured speedo. Nothing else. "Care to...explain?" DS shook her head, trying to find more words but failing. "I suppose." Kamai shrugged "What happened?" Nick blurted, trying for all the world not to giggle. "Lost my clothes." The speedo-clad roommate shrugged again, honestly appearing as if this were his modus operandi. "Did you get...any looks on the bus?" Hollie's question fell flat on its ass. "Didn't pay attention if I did." "Is that how you're going to work tonight?" DS's turn came back around, and she'd regained some of her ability to talk at this point. Nick seemed to be preparing another question as well, Hollie didn't have much time to think of one. "Why not? I might make better tips this way." Kamai ran a hand through his hair "Nick, Hollie, you get one more question each." "Why a speedo and why tangerine?" Kamai grinned at Nick's question. "Because it looks pretty damn sexy doesn't it?" "What the fuck is wrong with you?" gasped Hollie, for the life of her not really knowing what else to ask. "Nothing. I just lost my clothes, and this was all I had in my backpack. Inquisition over." Kamai slung his messenger bag onto the couch, narrowly missing Nick, before heading up to his room. They watched him go, and heard him pause momentarily. "Ha, Soja's in the Drunk Robe." Subsequently, the door to Kamai's room closed. DS, Nick and Hollie all exchanged very significant glances with one another. "Maybe we just need new roommates?" Nick offered, truly at a loss for an explanation. "Nah, we seem to attract the crazies, don't we?" retorted Hollie "I mean, we're three perfectly norma-" DS coughed rather violently "-two perfectly normal ladies-" "Hey!" Nick folded his arms, looking jokingly perturbed "and we're just bright lamps to these silly little moths." "Mm. Weak metaphor. Try again." DS shook her head. "and we're just kegs to frat guys." "not quite." "and we're just...gravy to turkeys?" DS Sighed. Hollie stammered and tried again. "and we're just...gold to Midases?" "And Hollie fails the metaphor game yet again." Nick sighed. "Hey!" she pointed in reply "That was a hard one!" "flames to moths would've worked just fine. I would've accepted Crack to addicts, free-poured shots of Whiskey to alcoholics, or extra-credit assignments to dorks, anything along those lines." "Fine. Mine were better." Hollie stuck her tongue out. "BOAGRIAS!" roared the TV. "Oh shh. Brad Pitt's gonna be naked onscreen in like...a minute." DS shushed them. Edited by Kamaitachi, Feb 20 2009, 04:23 PM.
