People will play if they're having fun and their stats get boosted. And there's a healthy amount of competition. There will be slackers, but that's their loss.

You'd be surprised how motivating it is to beat someone at something.

and then they all flock into so same group as non-enemies

see: Libertine

A competitive system that rewards the winners more than the losers will alienate the losers over time, which also alienates the winners.

Only they didn't really flock as much as I sought them out. I never had people PMing me for a spot anyway. Just vice-versa.

A competitive system without the competition part (i.e someone has to win and someone has to lose) isn't a competitive system.

I assume there IS going to be a country member limit or something. :Psyduck:

Where did that second statement come from?

I never was insisting in a competitive system.

@ Psio: I'm hoping we'll be able to balance competition with cooperation. It worked well in ECW's second RPG (I might add, the only one that lasted more than a third of a year). It's always interesting to have "enemies" in a game-- so long as the sides are relatively balanced.
That's a good thing we did at ECW-- set guild caps. Only when all guilds had at least 8 members would we increase the cap to 10. Only at 10 to 12, so-to-speak.
Regardless of the system we use I think balance here is key. No more Libertines.

While I've learned a lot from the dozens of RPGs (or at least a dozen) that I've been part of and have come up with a pretty decent system there are still some traditional issues that are difficult to deal with.

I kinda wish we had our own FETO-- I could mess around with it and implement a story. Set up some sort of guild/country system that people could take part in upon registration and then pit members in optional quests and stuff. A big problem here is our inability to update in real time. If only we could set it up and have those participating run through it with minimal pause for Judge updates. Any programmers among us? :NomNomNom:

I don't think Sassy would mind if we got like a carbon copy, or combine the two. A lot of FEP members wanted some kind of story element implemented.

I think the programmer of FETO would mind if we had a carbon copy of it. I don't really want to steal what FEP has, plus I don't know that we would have anywhere to actually host the database.

I'm learning, but I doubt I could do anything of that sort yet with Java. >>;
