I've already bought this game online, it should be here by tomorrow.

So my question to people who've played D/P is, which one of the starters should I pick?

An ice penguin, a turtle with a stick stuck in its head (that goes stick -> bush -> tree as it evolves) and a flaming monkey (lol).
Those are your options.

I liked the turtle with a stick stuck in its head because its a grass type with good moves that picks up the ground type upon evolution making it difficult to exploit any weaknesses.

The best to just get through the game with is probably Piplup because Empoleon offers a Pokemon who can learn Surf, which is a good attack for it in general, an Ice Beamer, good for A lot of types including Dragon and can even learn Earthquake so pretty much nothing can kill it lol.

I should get this on my R4 soon. I 6-0's my friends cousin in D/P the other day using my old competitive team and it revamped my interest in the competitive scene.

I say Turtwig if you haven't played the other ones. Turtwig is sturdy, learns good moves early, and has the advantage over a lot of the gyms leadears in the game if I remember correctly. It takes a while for piplup to learn anything really good (and I mean a while) and chimchar is a bit fragile if I remember it right. If you need someone to know Surf or Icebeam, Starmie would be a greatchoice for that if you plan on playing online. Other than that the game isnt hard and you won't NEED Icebeam. You will need surf but other pokemon can make good use of that HM both on the battlefield and on the map.

Turtwig if you want a sure thing. I picked it and I don't regret it at all.

Take Chimchar.

Nape is awesome, and unless Platinum really mixed up the encounters then it's the only fire-type you get pre-National Dex outside of Ponyta/Rapidash, which suck.

And Nape is fragile, yes, but also fast and strong.
It's great for in-game >_>

..really?

I never cared for keeping a fire type in my team.. but really? The only one?

It was nearly two years ago I played through this game I can't remember.

Diamond/Pearl had, before you got the National Dex, TWO fire-types, counting evolution chains as one Poke.

Chimchar, and Ponyta.
Infernape is awesome anyways, so it's the best pick statistically too.

I was told I could put my Fire Red in the GBA slot, and Growlithe would appear, and I've always been an Arcanine fan...

Is the penguin like Charmander, where its hard to get through the game, but ultimately most fulfilling? Cause if that's the case, I'm feeling the penguin.

That's possible, but I'm sure they dont start appearing untill AFTER National dex.
At that point you have other options too.

It's a pokemon game... it's never hard to get through the game.
But Chimchar has the best stats easily and is the only good firetype you have access to for most of the in-game story and such.

A Fire/Fighting presents too many weaknesses that any random enemy can exploit.
The nice thing about Ground/Grass is that the majority of its weaknesses are canceled out by their other type. Not to mention Torterra boasts some solid defensive capabilities (far outshining the flaming monkey), and fine enough offensive capabilities. It's one tough fucker to kill. Kinda like a General in Fire Emblem who's been stuffed full of Talismans. Still lacks the speed, I suppose. Leech Seed and Giga Drain made me a happy camper. And if those weren't enough there was always Synthesis. :3

Giga Drain is pretty bad on Torterra due to having crappy Special Attack, actually.
And Leech Seed only matters on long battles, and long battles shouldnt happen much, if at all.

And Nape has weaknesses... and he's also fast and kills enemies equally fast.
Torterra's defensive types arent that great either, tbh.

Nape's better for in-game since you can one-shot randoms pretty easily with him, and if you want to metagame then Torterra's Ice Weakness is even more of a crippling factor, especially with it's speed.

I went through Diamond the first time with just Empoleon and Luxray. Both of which aren't that great in competitive play, but for in game, they were all I needed.

Empoleon covers a lot of types. Like a lot. Turtwig and Chimchar are meh when it comes to weaknesses and don't learn very many attacks outside their original typing as far as covering their weaknesses go. Empoleon is beast in game. The only thing you may have trouble with is the second gym, a grass gym, and by then you should have SOMETHING that knows a flying type move or ice or something lol

Not using a Starly is a crime, so not having a flyer would be weird.

Staraptor is too awesome a final evolution to not use in-game D:

I've already gotten it, beat the E4. etc.

Concerning starters, I chose Chimchar because I really don't like penguins.
