Wants to finally beat HHM

So, I've owned FE7 for a long time, for at least 4 years. I've played through it fully at least 11 times, but I feel saddened by the fact that I've never been able to beat Hector's hard mode. I want to finally accomplish that.

Yet, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to FE. What characters should I use? What are things you strongly urge to make the playthrough easier? I'd take any advice at this point. I don't want it to be done for me, but I'd like a few starting tips so I don't do anything TOO stupid. :)

Alright... some general advice, then.

First off, and this should be obvious but... do Lyn's mode.
Kent Sain and Serra are excellent characters, and giving them the Exp from this mode makes them better.
And a levelled Matthew is important to winning HHM's first chapter unless you plan on resetting alot.
Depending on if you care about ranks or not, you also have a Seraph Robe and a Energy Ring to use, which is never a bad thing.

In HHM itself, remember that units recruited from the enemy side get HHM bonusses.
So Guy, Raven, Geitz... Theyre all better then they used to be.

Next... try to think of in advance which units you want to use, and plan their supports.
Supports are, especially if you're struggling, a good way to give your characters that extra oomph.

And dont be afraid to use Marcus to weaken things at the start.
If you make him rescue someone (Rebecca), he's a good weakener.
You may (or may not, he remains viable) want to ditch him when you've got a good team started up, but he can be a godsend early on.

I learned the hard way that Matthew needs to be leveled for the first chapter to be possible. lmao. I used the Seraph Robe on Matthew in Lyn's mode, does that just effect Lyn's rank or Hector's Rank too?

Pretty good advice.

Would it be OK to promote Serra early? It just seems difficult to get her to level 20 as a Cleric. I'm on Chapter 9 in Lyn's mode and I've totally abused her every opportunity I've had and only gotten her to level 3. I don't know if I have the patience to keep training her like that.

Yes, don't be afraid to promote Serra or Priscilla early. Or Erk, if you feel you need more healing than attack.

Also, I suggest to have Marcus rescue Bartre, not Rebecca. Bartre gets doubled by the brigands of the first few chapters. Rebecca can at least attack from a distance. Also, if you want to, Marcus is pretty usable later as long as you give him supports.

You only get Serra to level 3?

Then you havent been giving your units WTD enough.
In Lyn's mode, if for no other reason then Serra, attacking Brigands with Lances is a good idea (assuming the hit percentage isnt too bad, which it shouldnt be).
The extra damage taken allows Serra to heal more, and higher-levelled Serra=good.

Also, Lyn's Mode Funds rank affects which Gem Lyn has when she joins you.
It gives you a little less leeway in HHM Funds, but it isnt a big problem.
With healing +1 Hp levels, she should end Lyn's mode above level 3 easily.

Promoting early is best done on Serra and Priscilla, since they gain the most from it, the ability to attack.
I personally dont like promoting them early since it costs them levels of growth, but if you feel you need it, it doesnt really cost you much.

I got her a ltitle higher than 3. About level 6 at the end of Lyn's mode.

Now my biggest problem in Hector's mode so far: Eliwood sucks balls and is the hardest character to raise by far. >_>

Marcus-weakening should help in weakening things for him.

Between Marcus, Oswin and maybe Rebecca's counter-free plunk hits it shouldnt be too hard to set up a kill for him.

And get that support with Hector going ASAP, the full Defence and Avoid (The Def only at this point, really) will help you make him more survivable so he can kill and level.

Rapier stuff to death when necessary. And make sure to let Eliwood get the kill on infantry bosses when possible. Him gaining EXP is critical for multiple reasons, one of them obviously being to avoid Lloyd on Four Fanged Offense (not to mention recruiting Geitz on Linus's map).

Eliwood starts becoming really useful after the first 6 or so chapters, and for example, he's like the best unit in the game for killing Uhai, who is one of the gayest bosses in the game (liek over 50 evade, killer wpns, and he doesn't screw Lyn from behind, and 14 AS which is pretty darn existent).

And then pretty soon after when Eliwood starts to max out his support with Hector and build up that support with Lowen he starts becoming nearly invincible.

Paladins, Warriors, Berzerkers, Hector, Hell, anything that can use Axes, they're easily the best weapons.
Recommended line-up.

LM:
Kent or Sain, though I prefer Kent.
Wil or Erk, I prefer Erk.
Dorcas
Florina.

If you're power leveling, you can only fit a few as there's no arena's in Lyn's mode.

HHM:
Lowen or Dart
Canas
Serra
Legault
Fiora

That would be a great line-up.

And honestly, make Paladins adept at using their Axes, seriously, it's so much better considering their skill.
