Do you think someone could change their Laptop Graphics card without fucking up the laptop or losing data or something? Do you think Geek squad would know how? My graphics card sucks for such a spiffy laptop. |

I can't imagine upgrading parts on a laptop to be an easy, or inexpensive task. I mean, its probably possible, but I doubt it would be worth it. |

It can really hold you back if you have a shitty graphics card, yes. But laptops are ass for replacing anything... but if you plan on using your laptop for a goods time longer, it might be worth looking in to. |

I'm deffinately planning on keeping this laptop for a long time. I got it when sony first released the FW and it has good specs EXCEPT for the graphics card. I didn't think I would need to spend an extra 150 bucks or so for one with a much better graphics card but I think I should have. My laptop cost me a bout 1,400. I should've waited cus now you can get one with an extra G of RAM and more Disk space and a good graphics card thrown in there for about the same price. and yes its that bad. I have an ATI Radeon 1300 graphics card in it. I bought a copy of this months PC gamer magazine with a shit load of content on free MMOs online and free games and I realized I can't play any of the ones listed in the MMO list, which sucks cus they're all anime-ish ;___; But yeah, has anyone ever modded a laptop before? I'm sure its nothing like modding a desktop cus that's easy |

I can't imagaine it being that much different. All you'd have to do is take out the old one and put the new one in and install it, right?

I hope you aren't planning on owning that laptop for a long time. $ony? LOL Generally, you can only upgrade a laptop through the manufacturer, and just to illustrate how expensive this can be, replacing a motherboard on a Dell Inspiron 6000 is at least $400. RAM is the exception. There's almost always a user-accessible port through which you can replace the RAM sticks to higher spec'd ones, etc. Edited by Soja, May 23 2009, 05:22 PM.

Late model Dells are high performers, but expensive. If you want value, look into ASUS or HP. Whichever you do get, make sure you reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS before doing anything else. Those are loaded with a ton of junkware and trials you're never going to use. Of course, if you KNOW anyone, you might rather want to get one built; that way you can have control over exactly what pieces of hardware go into your machine, and it will turn out less overall as opposed to a comparable name-brand model. Just be warned that quality video cards for laptops are expensive as fuck. |

Its a long process sometimes. Thats why from my experience a personal laptop for long use is best when built from scratch, or at least with only a basic setup so you can do whatever you like to it. Especially if you know someone, ask them to do it maybe. At the very least you can skip out on the costs of sending it to the manufacturer. If you do buy a new one, I personally use HP with different OS's so I don't get the said "crap" that comes with it, or at least I uninstall or remove it all, which is also a pain. But honestly, computers are expensive regardless. If you like yours and just want a graphics card, be prepared for the cost. In the end it will be worth it, but don't skimp out. Computers are one of those things that you will often get the quality for the price you pay for it. |

By the way, if you upgrade video cards, be prepared to upgrade to a better cooling system as well. |

all if that seems so confusing....what's an OS? I thought about getting a regular desktop and putting in parts myself as I slowly but surely buy better parts but I don't have room for a desk top in my room. I have three different aquariums that already hog up so many plugs. ....I think my room is way past fire hazard now are alienwar laptops good? I remember there was a lot of hype for them when Alienware first came out but I don't know now if it was JUST hype. Also, lets say I found a laptop with a good graphics card, good RAM and processor, and decent Hard Disk space, would it be worth getting that if its under 700 bucks? btw, I e-mailed a geeksquad person and I guess my graphics card is attached to the mother baord and replacing the graphics card is not recommended ..... O___o |

Alienware is shit. 80% of the price is in the name, I'm sure. Good hardware, no doubt, but way overpriced. I've heard bad things about their customer service, though, and also with heat sink problems in particular. OS = operating system. This is the thing that makes your computer go, you see. Windows XP/Vista, Mac OSX, Linux, etc. |

oh.....duh, I should've guessed. I think buying a new laptop would have to wait til either a) I finish payiong off this one (pretty close to it) b) I'm gonna decide whether or not to buy either a Wii or a PS3 after watching G4TVs coverage of E3. c) If I decide to hold off on trading in my car for a different car. A laptop comes last but I was wondering how important is the mother baord? I found out my Graphics card is attached to it but is it more like a "its risky, don't touch" or is it something you just don't touch....ever. |

If it's an integrated graphics card, you're SOL; it's part of the motherboard. |
