Otherwise, all you really need to know is how probability and counting works. But for a simple explanation, Twilkitri has posted something here that might get you started on it.

XD I guess once I have spare time, I'll reason through Twilkitri's post and find a way to get those averages. Assuming my FE stat program gets finished, it should have a way to calculate the real averages in addition to the mode. Or I'll ask one of my math teachers to help out in the summer lol.
