Jugdral Monthly News
August Edition

Brought to you by Iago Shantar of Augstria
Sponsored by The Tavern Co.

This Month!

• Unit of the Month - exclusive interview with Lachesis [page 2]
• News from the Front - what’s changing in politics? [page 3 and 4]
• Questing - the who, what, where and how many [page 5 and 6]
• Rumours & Gossip [page 7]
• A message from our sponsor, The TavernTM [page 7]

But first... a message from your friendly neighbourhood journalist!

You have no idea how lucky you are to not be writing (and/or getting people to write parts for you) this damn thing. Really. No. Idea. How the hell did I wind up with this job anyway? I’m from Augstria. Aren’t journalists supposed to be impartial? Also, “friendly neighbourhood journalist” ...? No, just... no.

God damn.

How the hell did I get roped into this... oh yeah, I get paid for it. Well whatever. This is free for you idiots so you might as well read it. Also, support The Tavern because they’re the ones paying me, and I get the feeling I ain’t gonna be doing this next month. I get told I’m not too good at that “friendly” thing. Puts people off, or something

Well, why do they think I act like that?

Iago Shantar of Augstria
Temporary Reporter

Jugdral's Unit of the Month

Lachesis, Level 5 Fateseer of Yied (she uses lances, apparently... what’s up with that?)
Fastest unit on the continent
First unit to reach Level 5
Participated in Harass Supply Lines

Our best (read: only) reporter took it upon himself (read: was forced) to interview this lucky lady (is she really lucky? She gets to waste time being interviewed, whooo... at least I get paid for this).

The Interview

Iago: Introduce yourself. Now.

Lachesis: Hmph, pushy. Well, I am Marquise Lachesis of Yied nobility. Because his majesty the King Tyranus of Elzor is typically busy dealing with important matters, I tend to tackle any political dealings and attempt to defuse any negative situations before they get to him. I'm also a practicioner of the Lance and coordinate it with quick movements to take down my enemies while dodging their assaults.

I: I don’t actually care, but I have to ask how you got to level 5 so fast or this interview would be worthless. So?

L: Just a quest battle, truly. I managed to land a good number of killing blows when I could and was able to stay in the fray without taking too much damage. However, it wasn't something that I obtained just by working alone, it was thanks to the others in my party that I was able to land many of these blows, and to the healers for allowing me to stay alive so long.

I: Any tips for the idiots out there still stuck on level 1?

L: Engage in quest battles. This is not just to help you level up, but also to increase your tactical abilities, since you will be engaging in the typical form of combat, not just exchanging attacks with a single adversary. It teaches you to utilize terrain properly, judge potential outcomes, and utilize the type of combatant you are. My focus on speed helped me fell many enemies, but I had to be wary of attacks, and utilize terrain that helped me dodge my opponents attacks when I could.

Ultimately, sitting back in a safe environment is not going to teach you what you need to know to progress.

I: Our sponsors are forcing me to ask how you feel about being Unit of the Month? And it better be something positive, because they're paying for this.

L: It was nice to be noticed as Unit of the Month. I was quite surprised to be interviewed, especially since I wasn't aware that something of the sort occurred, but it was a pleasant surprise nonetheless.

I: Lastly, have you... wait, fuck this, I’m not reading out a goddamn advert. Just say something nice about The Tavern, alright?

L: Eh...

If you like bar fights, drunken mistresses, wild wyverns, and people with indiscernible genders, you will love the tavern. I think it was blown up, recently, but I don't think that will stop anybody from going there to engage in their debauchery, so why should it stop you?

I: Thank you for your time. (sigh)

Well thank god that’s over. And some people wonder why I avoid socialising... With people like this, do you seriously, seriously blame me?

Please, do me a favour, and make sure I get to interview someone vaguely intelligent next time. Send your suggestions for September’s “Unit of the Month” in a PM to Judge Hollie, Member #801, The Tavern Journalistic Society, The Tavern.

Rules:
#1 - You can’t nominate yourself. That would classify you as egotistical.
#2 - You can’t nominate someone who won’t show up. That would classify you as an idiot.
#3 - You can’t nominate someone without giving a reason. That would make you eligible for a flux spell to the face, especially if said nominee turns out to be a moron.

I’m serious about this guys. Don’t let the idiots paying me make that decision, they are useless.

News From the Front
Contributed by Judge Sentenal

Welcome to the News From the Front column. Here we discuss and report upon the current major events around Jugdral, such as the wars and alliances formed between nations.

Miletos Invades Grandbell

Perhaps the important event in World News currently is the on-going war between Grandbell and Miletos. Although it is know that King Brahms of Grandbell is a ruthless, brutal ruler, Grandbell was actually not the aggressor in this war. The Lords of Miletos claim to be have rights to the lands of Grandbell. From our investigations, the claims originate from a major guild that fought in the Guild and Warlock Wars, long ago. Apparently Lord Arden and Lord Askio of Miletos trace their ancestry to that Guild, and feel Grandbell is theirs by right.

Being the first formal declaration of war in many years, this began a chain of alliances and deals that currently shapes most the political landscape.

Both Agustria and Verdane have pledged support to Grandbell. On the side of Miletos, it was initally Isaac, Manster, and eventually Silesia. However, since then, Isaac discontinued their formal alliance with Miletos. Interestingly enough, Manster has allied itself with both Miletos and Agustria, and has issued a trade embargo against Grandbell on behalf of Miletos.

Initially it was believed that the Grandbellian city of Chalphy would be Miletos' first target, however, Arden of Miletos approached Yied, and negotiated a deal that would allow Miletos to around and attack Barhara directly. These negotiations would lead to the formation of Yied's Transit Policy, which would also spark more confrontations.

Miletos and Grandbell engaged in open battle, and after much bloodshed, Grandbell seemed to have the advantage, forcing Miletos to pull back. Of the leaders, only Askio of Grandbell is still standing, but he is outnumbered at the time of this article. Miletos has now sent their forces around the Grandbellian army, and has entrenched around the city of Barhara. Currently the Grandbellians have assaulted their positions, and it is unclear as to who will come out on top now.

Transit War

Yied has adopted a policy of allowing their lands to be traversed by the armies of other nations, however, they charge a toll, per unit, on belligerent nations. The Transit Treaty, as they came to call it, was not popular with other nations, in particular Isaac and Thracia.

Tensions continued to build, until finally, Thracia and Isaac declared war on Yied, with the stated reason being dissatisfaction with the Transit Treaty. Prince Reach of Thracia has been the most vocal against Yied, stating the policy is "cowardly, earning Yied free money without even having to lift a finger, while other nations [referring to his own] must fight work for themselves". Yied responds that it is their right to put up a 'road tax', and suggests that Thracia may have ulterior motive in their actions.

It also seems that Agustria has contacted Thracia, and pledged their support in the war against Yied. They currently are providing additional units for the Thracian army, but it is uncertain as to what the extent of their involvement will be.

The first battle of this war is taking place at Darna, with Thracian forces spearheading the offensive. The battle is new, and thus far no major actions have happened, save for Thracian forces burning down some outlying villages in the area.

Isaac currently has no units deployed in combat against Yied. They are expected to either join the Thracian offensive at some point in the future, or perhaps open another front.

Other News

There have been other, smaller happenings as well. Grandbell proposed to form an alliance with Thracia. However, Thracia refused, firmly stating their neutral stance in the war between Grandbell and Miletos, saying "both sides pay equally well."

Similarly, Silesia attempted to form an alliance with Isaac, however that was rejected by Isaac, saying that either side have little to offer the other.

Lastly, Thracia formed a Non-Aggression Pact with Manster, which for the time being brings an air of peace to the Thracian peninsula.

Current Alliances (this part added by Iago Shantar of Agustria)

Grandbell-Verdane - I don’t blame Verdane. It’s not their fault Prince Evander is of royal blood
Grandbell-Agustria - why god why?
Silesia-Miletos - don’t know much about Silesia, but there has to be something wrong with them if they’re allying with Miletos
Miletos-Manster - are you sure about this one, Highlord Remus?
Agustria-Manster - Highlord Remus’ alliance with Miletos puts his intelligence in doubt, but I don’t have too many complaints about this one
Isaac-Manster - temporary, but probably the smartest alliance I’ve seen yet... not that that’s saying much

Other events of note
Manster Trade Accord - 5% discount for all!
Isaac Proclaimation - first resigned alliance (not that I blame them - it was Miletos); first diplomat who seems genuinely intelligent; secret talks with Isaac, eh, Prince Lanthus? I suppose it’s too much to hope that this country we might be joining forces against is Grandbell? (By the way: “warlike fashion” - like war, but not actually war?)

Questing
Contributed by Judge Hollie

There have been a heck of a lot of Judged skirmishes recently. Here’s a quick run down of who, where, and how they went. Remember you need 3 battles together for a C support. <3

Slay the Undead
Phinora, Yied
Participants: Brahms and Hayato of Grandbell, Ambyr and Lobos of Isaac, Tyranus and Erica of Yied
Left Standing: Hayato and Erica
10 undead wandering around Phinora is obviously not good for tourism. ‘Nuff said, really. Sequel battle (imaginatively titled “Slay the Undead 2”) is currently underway.

Separatists in Agusty
Agusty, Grandbell
Participants: Reach and Cyrus of Thracia, Kanae and Brittanya of Silesia, Marco and Leo of Isaac.
Left Standing: Reach, Kanae, Brittanya and Marco
Somebody was trying to get Agusty separated from Grandbell and Agustria, which is obviously not on. Also, a country that small would be too ridiculous to be funny. Not much else to report.

Bandits in Melgen
Melgen, Manster
Participants: Lanthus and Aurenia of Agustria, Gabriel and Barnardo of Isaac, Askio and Reissa of Miletos
Left Standing: Lanthus, Gabriel, Barnardo and Askio
A very important trade route plagued by bandits. Not any more. First battle to feature the ever-annoying caravans, only you didn’t get to kill this one.

Pirate Attack
Madino, Silesia
Participants: Nephius and Meilana of Agustria, Charlotte and Norah of Agustria, Evan and Lara of Isaac, Iago and Kettrick of Agustria
Left Standing: Nephius, Meilana, Norah, Evan, Lara and Iago
Might as well have been labelled ‘Agustria only’. Not exactly the most diverse of battles... but an easy win anyway. (Well duh, Agustria’s awesome like that <3)

Harass Supply Lines
Edda, Miletos
Participants: Tessa and Destin of Thracia, Elena and Cordelia of Verdane, Zanzoo and Morgan of Verdane, Lachesis and Clotho of Yied
Left Standing: Elena, Morgan, Clotho and Lachesis
Good god, judges, we need to make shorter battles. This went on for a long, long time. On the plus side, we got our first level 5 unit out of this battle. Yay Lachesis, Unit of the Month.

Rogue Knights
Thove, Silesia
Participants: Kirakaas and Eridaen of Miletos, Evander and Vidar of Verdane, Xar’zith and Vlos of Miletos
Left Standing: Everyone except Xar’zith
Is it just me or does there seem to be a lot of rebellions going on recently? In any case, bad luck for Xar’zith, who has possibly the weirdest name I’ve ever seen.

Behind Enemy Lines
Yied, Yied (apparently)
Participants: Norah and Charlotte of Agustria, Rayann and Rarien of Grandbell, Evan of Isaac, Kettrick of Agustria
Left Standing: Norah, Rarien and Kettrick
This ended up being lance armour vs. 4. And the lance armour almost won. D: But that's what you get for having 4 swordies in the same battle.

Rumours & Gossip
Brought to you by The Tavern Journalistic Society

King Tyranus is only a puppet king. Someone known only as the Archon is behind Yied’s throne, pulling the strings.
Status: Confirmed.
With the Archon’s involvement in Thracia’s declaration of war on Yied, his role (or at least a role) in Yied politics was confirmed. Recently, our own reporter Iago Shantar has found himself fighting alongside the mysterious Archon, alongside King Tyranus’ wife, Lady Erica. What exactly this means for Yied, and the rest of the continent, is uncertain.
The Tavern’s comments: The Archon is a much more convincing ruler than King Tyranus. That’s all we’re saying.

Agustria is being a little too goody-goody. They’re up to something!
--Gossip from Miletos
Agustria’s power has certainly decreased in recent years; however, Prince Lanthus has made several steps to gain support around the continent - alliances with Grandbell and Manster, offering aid to Thracia and Isaac against Yied, and offering neutrality to everyone else except Miletos and Yied. Some in Miletos are beginning to question whether Prince Lanthus is really as good-hearted as he seems.
The Tavern’s comments: Well they would think that, wouldn’t they? They’re at war with Grandbell! We’re not denying that Agustria could have ulterior motives, but we question what kind of ulterior motives they would have with them being nice to most of the continent. Besides, that Prince Lanthus is such a thoughtful boy!

Thracia’s mercenary forces are severely depleted... why else would they need Agustria and Isaac’s help in Yied?
Status: Untrue.
Thracia has always prided itself on the strength of it’s army. Being a nation with little resources of it’s own, they have always relied on the army to provide what the people need. However, Thracia also pride themselves on being formidable warriors. An alliance with Isaac, however temporary, does seem surprising.
The Tavern’s comments: Frankly, this is just baseless propaganda from Yied - need we point out that Thracia makes up a majority of the assault on Darna? In fact, the only foreign unit is from Agustria, since it seems Thracia’s healers are elsewhere in the continent. We feel the need to point out that Thracia is still carrying out some mercenary work. Not much, but still. What is interesting is the lack of Isaac units in this battle. Are they perhaps preparing to launch a second front?

That’s all we have this month. If you heard any rumours or idle chitchat that sounds interesting, send a PM to Judge Hollie, Member #801, The Tavern Journalistic Society, The Tavern. To confirm or deny, that is our mission!

A Message From The Tavern

Hello there readers!

Welcome to the first issue of Jugdral Monthly News (sorry for the delay - expect it to be out in the first week of every month from here onwards). We are your source for what’s happening right now in Jugdral.

This month, we’ve had several informative contributions from the Judges and The Tavern Journalistic Society. Wonderful as that is, the people we really want to hear from is you, our readers out there in the thick of the action. Whether it’s a rumour or a piece of gossip, an article or a wish to hold an interview, the Jugdral Monthly News is happy to showcase anything you want to share. Our aim, ultimately, is to garner understanding between the nations of Jugdral... though not necessarily peace.

Last of all, I would like to thank Iago Shantar of Augstria for putting this together and interviewing Marquise Lachesis for this issue’s “Unit of the Month” (remember to send us your nominations for next time!). Although he is, uh, a little rough around the edges, he’s the only man we could get on short notice (recommended by Judge Hollie, incidentally). He’s probably about as impartial as we’re going to get anyway. He dislikes everyone pretty much equally.

See you next month!

CEO of The Tavern Co.

It looks like you put in alot of time into this, so hopefully I can help out more next month, to reduce your workload.

Articles on the war, on a specific quest battle (there's a lot of undead roaming about recently?), conspiracy theories, "seeking girlfriend", battle interviews (good one, Arden)... pretty much anything. :pacman:

Noddy's cousin offers a weather report, for those interested. This won't affect any in-game mechanics, though it can be incorporated into roleplay situations.

The Seer's Weather Report
August, Gran 1125

Agustria: Unusual summer weather ahead. Expect rain and colder temperatures. On the bright side, there's little to no wind, so fliers are free to glide the skies. Invest in raincoats and umbrellas.
Grandbell: Clear, average temperatures, with no wind. Grandbellians rejoice to a nice summer end.
Isaac: Clear, unspectacular weather with light winds but no problems. Temperatures remain within average range.
Manster: It gets chillier, but otherwise the weather will remain nice for the remainder of August.
Miletos: It gets moderately windy, with a wind force around 12 mph. Temperatures remain within the average range during this time of year, however.
Orgahil: More windy than usual, with an average of 20 mph. Temperatures normal.
Silesia: Lethe snow. Lethe snow is imbued with enchantment magic, and is often accompanied by a faint tinkling sound as it falls. Stay inside, for it has a tendency to put you to sleep quickly with extended exposure, which can prove to be deadly. Things get colder than usual.
Thracia: Dire times ahead. Expect a severe thunderstorm, hail, and a tornado to greet you at the end of August. It's probably a good thing your forces are currently in Yied. Windstorm approaches 55 mph. Hail is large enough to deal property damage, so cover up. A tornado uproots trees, destroys buildings, and causes other similar forms of major destruction if precautions are not taken ahead of time.
Verdane: Clear, but colder than usual. Light wind, but otherwise uneventful weather ahead.
Yied: Severe heat looms ahead before August dies. Temperatures in the mainland desert will reach a high of 138°F, and the lowest it will ever go is 125°F. Moderate winds of 12 mph still offer little relief. Yied inhabitants may be used to this weather, but the invading Thracian forces should wear as little armor as possible and keep themselves well-hydrated, otherwise there's a high risk of heat stroke.
