I guess I can give a brief introduction.

Once you create your character, you're plopped in the kingdom of Caanae before it's ransacked by the horde (orcs and bad guys), and this serves as the tutorial. The guy (I forgot his name already) is your guide through the tutorial and he explains this. Beyond following his instructions (he teaches you to move, look, etc.) you're also to find several other NPCs who give you further instructions. You GREET them and they usually tell you what you need to know to proceed. Once you manage to meet all these people, you return to the guy you met when you first logged in, and he goes emo about having to die once again and he gets impaled my an orc. You're instructed to submerge yourself in the fountain so you may awaken in the present time. Doing this ends the tutorial, but you're still given TASKS to do in order to ascend a few levels and acquaint yourself with other specifics.

You type in TASKS to bring up this list. HELP is also helpful. I typically just go down the list. As you do these tasks, you're granted instant experience, and you should arrive at level 6 - 10 soon by doing those alone.

PORTALS brings you to a helpful place where you can find locations by simply reading the signs and following the directions. They can guide you to a few hunting grounds, but chances are you'll die if you dare to challenge anything stronger than a rat (humorously, you also get instant experience if you die to a rat). It's best just to visit and explore, since the enemy mobiles won't turn hostile unless you attack them first. So you can essentially sleep in front of an orc if you don't attack him.

PORTALS usually last only 25 or so times, so don't go too crazy, and you won't be able to use them when you reach level 30. Levels 1 - 29 are considered the n00b levels. After that point, you'll find yourself assaulted by rabid elk each time you attempt to enter a newbie hunting area.

The newbie channel is cool, too, and some veterans may help you out even if they can't use the channel themselves. They'll mostly likely TELL you. You can TELL back by typing in 'tell <player name> <message>.

In all honesty, you'll probably die a dozen times before you get anywhere, and it'll be confusing for a while. It's not a game you play if you're easily frustrated. You'll fall, drown, burn to death, get eaten, etc. It's a learning experience, and I guarantee I have so far killed myself more than the enemies have.

Very few people will pick on newbies. People don't even hunt me down yet. If someone decides to kill you (besides the usual enemy mobiles), chances are you can find someone in whatever city you're in willing to exact revenge for you. Hell, some of them don't even need to be asked.

Laharl is the exception because he pissed off the desert people by killing off their sacred dragonflies and wandering around with the title "Dragonfly Slayer" on the players online list. If you don't piss people off, you'll usually be fine until they consider you a threat (which is level 75 - 100, usually). :NomNomNom:

The Demon / Anti-Magic circles are more PK heavy, but they're also bigger and provide more support. The Magic circle is more close-knit, but they have the most cities available to them (three, the others get two). If you're from a magic city, it's usually a bad idea to go into an enemy city. I'd familiarize myself with the cities you want to STAY AWAY from quickly. Also, while I doubt they'll hate on you if you're a newbie, you'll be expected to hunt only with fellow people within your circle because city politics are serious business.

If you find you don't like the choices you made with your character after you get a better handle on the game, you can always SUICIDE or REINCARNATE.

And that's probably all I can share with you without being even more confusing, at this point. :NomNomNom: But if Laharl has the patience to learn the system, I'm sure anyone can. He even managed to do it without my help, for the most part.

Other tidbits:

  • 'Path find' and 'memorise as' are your friends. Path find makes you speed walk to a defined area, which is already listed as a default landmark (see HELP LANDMARKS), or one of the areas you MEMORISE (by typing in 'memorise as <whatever you want to name the location>). So if you're at a bank, and you're afraid you may never find it again, you could type 'memorise as bank' and the location will be stored. When you want to return to the bank, type 'path find bank' and then (after you regain your balance) type in path go. Mind you, if you have to swim, you very well could drown if you don't have an elixir handy. To stop the speedwalk, you type 'path stop'. Certain NPCs can also be path finded (like Reverie and Rythanis).
  • You can PROBE enemies before you decide to try to slay them. If it says something along the lines of 'is not to be trifled with' or 'extraordinarily strong', I wouldn't attempt it. :Psyduck: The rats and spiders will do for levels 1-15.
  • You can't sell most stuff, though there are auction houses. I just never bothered to use them.
  • Always have an elixir of health handy.
  • Don't try to PK unless you know how to work triggers and aliases. It just won't end well. Most people who PK heavily have bots. :NomNomNom:

Yeah....I'd love to join you guys in a game, but this seems kind of overly complicated for me. And I'm also a graphics whore when it comes to games. XP
If it doesn't look pretty I'm probably gonna lose interest fast. XD

the flash client can actually work on my connection even when it's sucky, so text > graphics in my case :Psyduck:

tl; dr version of useful / frequently-used commands

  • Sleep: You can sleep to refill your health. It takes about a minute and you get dreams. Not considered wise when you're at higher levels just because you'd need to WAKE quickly if someone attacked you, and that isn't always immediates.
  • Eat: You'll get hungry, but food is cheap. You'll get notified when you're getting hungry, but you can also use STAT to check up on your status. Hunger doesn't negatively affect you until you're starving.
  • Clothes: In order to be dressed "normally' you need a pair of boots, pants, a shirt, and a cloak. Weather is present in this game, so you should get around to clothing yourself sooner or later.
  • Stat: Gives you an overview of your current status. Includes state, amount of dress, hunger, bonuses, and defences.
  • Score: Shows you your levels and score. You have a Overall Level, PK Level (player killing), Bashing Level (defeating monsters), and Quest Level (completing quests). Typically your bashing level will be almost = to your overall level. You'll also be ranked in several things.
  • Take <item> / Put <item> in <item>: Used to put stuff in your pack, usually.
  • INR all / OUTR: There's a storage area called the Rift that allows you to put your herbs and bait inside it so it may stop them from decaying (all items have a decay rate, but clothes and stuff last at least a year).
  • Probe: Get more details about things you probe.

Useful items:

  • A pack or satchel. If you die with gold on hand, you'll drop it and some loser can come around and take it before you can return to the area.

    • Tattoos: When you can, get a boar, tree, moss, shield, owl and cloak tattoo. You can view what tattoos you have with TATTOOS. You get tattoos buy purchasing them from Reverie (path find Reverie, path go) with the command BUY <tattoo name> TATTOO ON <body part>. Don't do anything while she sketches it on you, or else she'll screw up and the process will have to start over. A moon tattoo may also be recommended for spellcasters. They do the following:
    • Boar Tattoo: Simply put, it grants Renewal. You gain a small amount of health at a steady pace. There's a small chance that it'll disappear each time it's used, though, so these can get expensive. It could very well fade the first time it works.
    • Tree: Cures most status afflictions when it's touched.
    • Moss: Prevents bleeding for the most part. Bleeding can get annoying, even though it rarely kills you unless you're battling something particularly fierce in conjunction.
    • Shield: Erects a shield, but you'll be unable to perform any hostile actions when it's up. Can be broken with negating powers or the Hammer tattoo, so use carefully. The goblins have Hammer tattoos.
    • Owl: Reduces the experience deduction you get for dying.
    • Cloak: Some players have the ability to SUMMON you, and if they mean harm they can do this and easily catch you off guard. The cloak prevents this. Most experienced players always use the cloak as soon as they log in.
    • Moon: The mana equivalent of the Boar tattoo. If you're a mage, chances are you'll be using your mana much more frequently than your weapons.

  • Get a weapon, especially if you don't have some nifty spell that can kill baddies. Get armor as soon as you can, too. PROFICIENCIES and HELP ARMOR should tell you what your class can use.
  • Guilds are awesome and there's usually someone who can help you out for cheap. Once you choose a profession, seek Cerise (path find Cerise) and follow the instructions to get yourself into a guild. Make ample use of the GHELP files once you're in a guild.

Oh yeah, and when you die, you're transported to Dis and get a slight experience reduction. You need at least two tokens to pay Charon to bring you back to the living. You only need one if you're below level 30.

You get tokens by completing underworld quests or gambling with Emil, who can be found in wester part of Dis (the room to the north, next to the News room). The quests take longer, but Emil will steal experience each time he defeats you and you don't have a token on you (which he would otherwise take). If you're lucky, someone will find your corpse and submerge it in Aryana's Fountain (the fountain you had to submerge yourself in earlier to start the game, found by typing in 'path find caanae'). This will resurrect you without making you go through all the hassle.

If you do have to go through the hassle, once you get the tokens you must return to Charon (who is a level down from where you started, hopefully, or the place where you started -- I forget) and BUY PASSAGE TO (whatever city you wish to be whisked away to).

Eventually you'll arrive at your destination and you'll have DIVINE GRACE on, which protects you from harm but prevents you from harming anything yourself. You get rid of this by typing REJECT GRACE. If you got killed by a player, it may be best to keep it on for awhile.

I think that's all I have for newbies. Everything else can be explained better in HELP <whatever topic you wish to learn about>. :NomNomNom:
