A lot of McCain's problem was the one that was the Dems' problem tonight: lack of voter turnout. Going back to rebut something Crysta said earlier in the thread, letdowns affect the base because that causes a loss of faith. They don't need to switch their votes for the other guy because of it (although they very well may as a 'vote against,' which likely happened to Corzine tonight); they just need to not show up. Because Big O was something new and fresh a year ago, tons of "his people" turned out to vote. But now that all that's played out and this isn't a big deal, who cares? Unfortunately for the Dems, that's cost them dearly. Some say that this was a referendum on Obama; indeed, they tried to deny that possibility before the polls had even opened today. Indeed again, Obama's campaign appearances did nothing for the Democratic candidates, which implies a deep level of anger driving votes as CNN has pointed out. I'm tempted to think that it is; after all, 2006's midterms and 2008's general elections were both regarded as referendums on W., so why isn't it possible that that's the case with Big O now? At any rate, a warning shot of sorts has been fired. |

It's a warning, and a referendum, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high yet. If he pulls off anything successfully...
This is why I can't take the "core" of the party very seriously. And I have a feeling a lot of other people couldn't, either, hence why he won the nomination opposed to some "true conservative". |
