The Mediocrity That Is El Walto, Day 39-1 I was so cold. I had no idea that a place that was a hundred degrees in the daytime could be freezing at night. At least Mrs. Bea (she asked me to call her by her first name, how cool is that?) brought some blankets along, but I was still really, really cold. I also had no idea where I was or where we were going so I decided to ask. "Mrs. Bea, what's our plan for the day?" "Walt, do you see that tunnel over there? On the other side is Mexico. Have you ever been?" "No ma'am." "Well, you're going today. Some people use those tunnels to get into the USA-- we're going to use this one to get out without anyone ever knowing we were here. I have a friend across the border that should be able to help you with your ability." That would be very cool, to be able to wish again. "OK, what are we waiting for? I'm freezing!" So, we got on the horse and went. We got through the tunnel, and that's when everything went wrong. There were these guys in dark suits and ties, and they seemed kind of like they were waiting for us to get a little bit past the tunnels, and then they jumped out and this one chubby guy with glasses said we were under arrest... only he said it in American and not Mexican. (They speak a different language there, right?) The other thing that was weird was that it looked like his clothes were all new, but from Wal-Mart or something. He also had a big knot on his forehead. Mrs. Bea said they had no right to arrest us here, and I think she was right, but that just made them mad. They pushed Mrs. Bea down off the horse and tried to handcuff her. That's when she pulled out a knife from her belt and grabbed the chubby guy behind his back and put the knife up to his neck. She yelled, "Run, Walt! Run and don't stop!" It didn't feel right, leaving her there with just her against four guys, even if she told me to run. But I was really REALLY scared, and I ran. I ran a really long way, until I could just barely hear them shouting. I hid behind a cactus and watched. I think Mrs. Bea knew they were going to kill her, and she was just waiting until I was able to get away. She might have thought she could take out four guys with guns, but I'm pretty sure she decided I was important enough for her to give up her life. I remember hearing once from Mom how there's no greater love than laying down your own life for your friends... Anyway, one of the tie guys decided he had enough, and took a shot. I think he missed the chubby guy and hit Mrs. Bea in the shoulder, because she kind of spun around and let go of the knife. The chubby guy tried to stop the tie guys from shooting again, but they didn't listen and shot her lots more while she was on the ground. I figured she must be dead, so i kept running. I ran. And I hate myself for it. Edited by WildBillWalto, Feb 26 2009, 02:26 PM.
