Day 30-3

Leslie Arzt

He took a bite of a mango, and it dripped juice down his arm and onto his hand. He was getting sick of Mango’s.

Arzt looked around conspiratorially. The chink – that guy, Miles, was on the other side of the clearing alone. Arzt had run out of all of his funniest jokes, which Karl had obviously found hilarious, and he had also been running out of stories and things to say which would create genuine bonding between him and his son. Plus there was this guy, Gabe, tagging along, and Arzt wasn’t really sure what to do. Both Karl and Gabe were hinging on every word out of Arzt’s mouth, and he felt obligated to provide some entertainment. Being a father was difficult sometimes. You had to keep the kids entertained. Well, it was time for the pulse weapon.

“You guys gotta see this thing,” Arzt said with a laugh as he removed the sonar pulse weapon from his bag. Karl’s expression so obviously said, ‘omfg that is the gd f’ing coolest thing I have eva, I mean EVA seen!’ and Gabe looked like he crapped himself when he saw it, he was so excited.

“Hmm? What’s that?” Karl asked.

“This is what I use to stop that smoke monster thing!” Arzt declared triumphantly. “It’s pretty cool, eh?” Arzt said, attempting to hand the device over to Karl, but it stuck to the mango juice on his hand. He started shaking his hand, and the device almost came loose. At that point, Gabe attempted to grab it to keep it from falling, but Arzt jealously grabbed it back, causing it to go off.

At that point, the trio’s eyes went to Miles, who was standing in front of said smoke monster himself! Puffing up proudly, Arzt pointed the pulse weapon at the smoke cloud, which retreated from Arzt in abject terror. The thing was SOOOOOOO afraid of Arzt, he could taste it. So Arzt deftly took a step forward, raising the weapon and declared, “Do you feel lucky, punk? Do you?”

Miles had a three word response to the situation: “What the sweet jiminy Christmas?” (this, like much of the post, is a Haggis translation of actual events)

“Wohoo!!!! Arzt declared, did you see that? DID YOU SEE THAT!? Take that, you cloudy smoke thingee! You can’t stand before the prophet and his legions!” Arzt began a little jig, and he managed to slip on a piece of mango peal, and plummet to the ground.

Karl laughed at his father and stepped over to Miles, “That was Smokey,” he said, in response to Miles’ earlier question. “It’s the island security system.”

“Who controls it?”

“Who said anyone controls it?” Karl shrugged.

After several minutes, it was decided that the group should move on. They meandered around the area, following Arzt primarily, who was following Miles, who had given up on following Arzt and was following Gabe, who at least seemed to have a clue what he was doing. Unfortunately, Gabe thought he was following Karl, and the whole thing was brilliantly unsuccessful, but no one seemed to realize it, because they came upon a beach before they figured it out, and on that beach was…

“Delmond!” Arzt exclaimed uproariously, leading the little group (Miles was forced to follow Arzt at this point because Gabe followed him). “Hi, Delmond, this is my new group of friends! Everyone, this is Delmond. He’s from New Zealand.”

“It’s Desmond, and I’m from Scotland.”

“Ah, yes, well, erm…. Who’s your friend?”

The two looked at each other self-consciously. “This is Matthias…”

“Right then,” Arzt said, sort of expecting more, but then he remembered, “Oh, glad you’re alive, mate,” he said in his best Australian accent, trying to be all multi-cultural. “so, ahm, mate, we were, mate, thinking of looking for that Goodwin, mate. You wanna join us, mate?”

“Goodwin…” Desmond murmured.

DESMOND

Day 30
Entry 1

"Goodwin?" Desmond wondered aloud.

The Orchid...
The poison gas...
His betrayal...
He wondered how much they knew. Or if they knew at all. Didn't matter. After what Mathias had revealed to him over night, Desmond would have to ease them all into the truth now anyway. "Why are you looking for Goodwin?"

"He was at the Tempest when it blew. We're trying to account for everyone who was there." explained Artz.

"Well brotha, I can account for Goodwin."

"Ah... excellent." exclaimed a satisfied Artz as he went to withdraw his list.

"He is one of them." interjected Desmond.

Artz stopped fussing for the list, "One of them? Really? Are you sure?"

"Aye." confirmed Desmond as he became increasingly disinterested in the topic.

Artz looked back at Karl with scolding eyes, "Did you know this?"

"Yes." quipped Karl, deliberately impassive to the question.

"Well why didn't you--"

"What?... Tell you?" interrupted Karl, "I did. Don't you listen to me?"

"Hey!" interrupted Desmond. "There's something much more pressing at stake here." He paused to note their attention. "Everyone on this island is in great danger. There is a boat on it's way here as I speak..."

"A boat? That's great news!" declared Gabe.

Mathias stepped forward and spoke, "They're not coming to rescue anybody. They're coming to kill everyone here. They want to take over the island."

"How do you know this?" asked Miles, overtly curious, as if suspecting to hear a particular answer.

Desmond replied "I know the man who sent them. If there is something he wants, he will stop at nothing till he gets it."

Artz began to panic a bit "What do we do? How do we stop them? We need to warn everyone!"

"There may not be enough time to warn everyone, but I do know a way we may be able to fight them." Desmond turned to Gabe, "Goodwin was the one who stole your glass rod containing the poison gas."

"That's not good. He could make more."

"He already did."

"You know this?"

"Aye... I helped him do it."

"What? Why?"

"Doesn't matter. What matters is that we have it. And when that boat arrives, we're gonna use it." Said a determined Desmond.

"Well where the hell is the stuff?" jeered Miles.

"The Orchid." solemnly winced Gabe, "I know the way all too well. Follow me."

Miles, Day 30-3, Shock and Awe

Whiskey tango foxtrot, thought Miles. I actually probably DID just get my life saved by Arzt. Now the last dude we're trying to find has some kind of poison gas? And Yemi was just a security system? How in the bloody hell did it know about Africa? More importantly, how do I know I can trust anybody here? How the hell did Desmond know about the freighter? Why does he want to kill the other members of my group? Wait, did he say they're here to kill everyone on the island?!?

"Desmond is lying."

This statement caused everyone to immediately stop what they were talking about and look directly at Miles. Desmond looked as if several veins in his face were about to burst, and Arzt looked confused. Well, I guess that isn't all that different than normal.

"And how, pray tell, can you tell that, soldier?" Desmond's anger enhanced his brogue prominently.

"Because I was on that freighter four days ago. We're here to protect certain interests, not kill anyone. If I was here to kill everyone on the island, Arzt here would have been dead the moment I saw him. Instead, I tried to incapacitate him non-lethally. Why would someone sent here to kill everyone not kill?"

"Maybe it's because you wanted to see where everyone was by getting buddy-buddy with someone?" offered Matthias.

"With HIM?!?" exclaimed Miles, pointing at Arzt. Desmond backed off, as he saw the fallacy of befriending someone like Dr. Leslie Arzt if Miles had intentions of surviving his journey to the other survivors.

"Well, if you're not here to kill us, why the hell did you come on the same boat as the soldiers?"

Miles was surprised at this statement. "What do you mean soldiers? There were only six people aboard the freighter. Myself, two other scientists, a bodyguard, the chopper pilot and ship pilot. That's it."

Mathias knew he had been with soldiers. "You're the one who's lying, Miles. I darn near got into a brawl with one of 'em shoreside, named Keamy. The Kahana is full of soldiers waiting to kill everyone here."

"Wait, the Kahana? I dropped in from a chopper based on the Cobalt."

Gabe seized on the obvious. "Wait, there are TWO freighters inbound?!?"

CHARLES WIDMORE

Day 30
Entry 1

Widmore and Ben arrived at the Hanso Foundation for a personal meeting with Thomas Mittlewerk, President of the Foundation. Ben insisted that Mittlewerk could help with the translation. Widmore insisted on carrying the Black Rock ledger. Ben was fine with that arrangement.

The two entered Mittlewerk's office and were warmly welcomed. "Thank you so much for coming. When I heard the Ledger was discovered I was elated. I would've attended the auction myself, but I knew I didn't stand a chance against someone with such resources as yourself Charles."

Ben forced a smile. Mittlewerk turned away to pour some tea. Ben nudged Widmore and whispered "So I'm just another one of your 'resources' now?"

Annoyed, Widmore quietly shushed his unruly partner's dig.

"Milk or sugar?" Mittlewerk asked as he turned with two steaming ceramic teacups.

"No thank you."

"So lets see it." Thomas said with an anxious grin.

Widmore pulled it out and unwrapped some cloth to reveal the relic.

Mittlewerk's eyes grew wide. He entered a trance like state as he stared at Ledger, "Too bad Alvar didn't live long enough to see this."

Widmore scoffed at the notion, "Please Thomas, if Alvar Hanso didn't succumb to cardiac arrest, then we would've had to do him in anyway."

"Point well taken Charles. You certainly were careful in making sure that bloodline ceased to exist." Replied Mittlewerk.

Ben rolled his eyes and sneered, "You two and your ancient curses."

"It's true Benjamin." scorned Widmore, "and you'll see as soon as Thomas translates this Ledger."

"Hey, I'm well aware of the Island's supernatural capabilities, but to think Magnus Hanso can enforce his decree from the otherside is a stretch, even for me!"

"Ben how can you say that? Magnus Hanso was the first to discover that place and unlock it's secrets. The island is indebted to his will."

"Gentlemen, gentlemen..." interrupted Mittlewerk, "All this bickering is useless. Hanso's decree doesn't matter. Alvar is dead. Oh... and not to mention that long lost cousin of his too... What was his name Charles?"

Ben and Widmore looked over at one another uncomfortably. Charles then answered Mittlewerk's question..."Desmond."

"Yes Desmond. That's it. Boy, what you went through to have him killed. How is your daughter taking it by the way?..."

Widmore only nodded.

Mittlewerk continued "Anyway, there is no destined rightful owner to lay claim to her shores. No heir to the island exists anymore. Thanks to all your hard work Charles."

Ben scoffed under his breath "Hard work... Please... Can we get down to business already?"

"Yes... So, some form of Hindi you say? Let's have a look, shall we."

Nathan Rom
Day 30: Entry 2
"You..." He looked much older than the last time he saw him when he hugged him and promised to go visit him at New York... there was no doubt in Nathan's mind that this was Boone. His eyes said it all. He had blood on his shirt and looked like he had been rolling around in dirt.
"I see you haven't forgotten about me. How could you even think about killing yourself man?!"
"I'm sorry... I had given up hope!" Nathan hugged Boone and he couldn't help but notice the foul odor surrounding him....
"Dude you smell! When was the last time you showered?!" Nathan had to back away from Boone.
"I am dead Nathan. I died on this island about two weeks ago." Nathan was utterly shocked to hear this. He could barely stand still.
"You were on the plane? How come nobody ever told me about you?!"
"You were at my funeral Nathan. Remember when Jack and Kate stopped to bury someone?" Nathan lowered his head in shame.
"Yes... I was tired of carrying heavy equipment that I ignored your burial... oh my god!" Nathan began to let a few tears out.
"I was utterly rude to you." Boone put his right hand on Nathan's left shoulder.
"It's okay man I forgive you. Who would have known that we were both on the same plane huh?"
"Thank you for saving my life. I wish we could have met when you were still alive. Is there something you need me to do for you? Is that why you haven't crossed in the afterlife?" Boone nodded positively and then looked worried.
"They are going to kill my sister and they are going to kill Kate! Nathan you have to save them! You have to go back to the island and save Shannon and Kate!!" When the words Shannon came out of Boone's mouth Nathan was completely shocked.

"Shannon is your sister? Oh no.... no!! I almost killed her...." Boone assured Nathan everything was okay.
"It's okay man. You didn't know and The Others were using you."
"I can't do this Boone. I am not strong enough. I am weak..." Boone started to get impatient.
"Nathan... YOU HAVE TO GO BACK!!" Nathan had to walk away from all of this. This was too much for him.
"Nathan... please they are going to kill them!" Nathan stopped. He turned around and saw Boone right in the eyes.
"I am going to die ain't I? My purpose is to save the lives of the ones we both care about while I sacrifice myself right?" Boone remained motionless and expressionless.
"I suggest you get some help. Go North and you will see a house with a farm. There you will find all the help you will need." Nathan turned away from Boone and tried not to get mad at him.
"Damnit Boone at least let me know if I am going on a suicide mission!" He turned back to face Boone, but he was gone.

Nathan stood there trying to absorb everything that had just occurred. He stopped and looked at the sky.
"Well my friend I am going to do it. Soon I will be by your side. Save me a seat okay?"

Day 30-2

Benjamin Linus - Useful Information

"Well, Greta, we at least got one piece of useful information out of that," Ben said as the duo walked back to the ferry boat. Greta looked to Ben, expecting him to share his revelation without her asking. "I am pretty certain that none of our people are feeding Richard with information, therefore, everyone whom we have recruited is in support of us."
"How do you know that?"
"He did not know about the helicopter yesterday. I made sure that all of our people knew about it for this reason. And Richard is a terrible liar. His left eye twitches when he lies. I learned that playing poker with him."
Greta laughed softly. "And what do I do when I lie?" she asked. Ben raised his eyebrow, but did not answer. Greta waited, but was disappointed in Ben's recalcitrance. "Very well. So, how soon do we move on your plan?"
"I'd like our plans to come to fruition within 6-7 days, but there are still some variables to be accounted for."
"Will Operation Kamino be in place by then?"
Ben shrugged, "Operation Kamino is only one option available to us. In the mean time, I believe that we need to account for some of those variables I mentioned."
"Such as?"
"These newcomers, and not-so newcomers. Namely last night's visitor, Mr. Straume, and Mr Hume from the Swan station."
Puzzlement oozed from Greta, "I can see the former two, but why the latter? According to our current information, he has been here for at least a year and has not caused any problems."
For a moment, Ben did not answer, but then he gave an answer that was somewhat enigmous, "Beatrice tells me that Mr. Hume is special."

Ben sat in the lobby of the Hanso Foundation utterly stunned at the amazing piece of information that he had just learned. Could it really be true? This truly changed everything. Everything.
Charles came out of the restroom and walked over to Ben. "So, my friend, has our business concluded here?" he asked, greedily clutching the Ledger and his copy of the translation.
"I believe so... friend," Ben oozed. The two walked silently out to the car and Ben knew what was coming about 15 seconds before it occurred.
The driver opened the door for Charles, but no door was opened for Ben. He futilely reached to his door, but it was locked. Ben gazed on Charles, who was holding a revolver that was pointed at Ben's chest. "Sorry, friend, but it appears our business has concluded here."
"Now, Charles, what are you doing?"
"Exactly what you planned to do to me," he said as he shot the revolver towards Ben's foot. The bullet did not hit him, but it did cause Ben to stumble backwards and fall over the curb. "Now, Ben, I will be on my way to Bermuda immediately. Your accounts and your access to mine have been frozen. Let us see if you can keep up with this leg of our little game, eh?" he smiled as he sat in his car and it rode away at a leisurely pace.
Ben sat on the curb for a moment, not terribly surprised. It wasn't long before the sound of someone lighting a cigarette caused him to look up. "Good call, Benjamin. He did exactly what you predicted."
"That he did," Ben responded to Mittlewerk. "You told him to go to Bermuda?"
"You know, the whole Bermuda Triangle thing? I figured that was at least plausible."
Ben laughed softly. "Charles should have learned from the Ledger that I wouldn't leave the prize in plain sight. Do you have the unaltered translation for me, Thomas?" Mittlework nodded. "Good. The Hanso Foundation's contribution to my efforts will not go unnoticed."
"Screw the foundation," Thomas spat. "Just take care of Peter Thompson for me, and then I'll be happy."
"Once I am on the island, it will be so," Ben stated simply, and this seemed to satisfy Mittlewerk. "So Thomas, tell me about this Desmond..."
