Uh oh, Ryan finally got his own section on the forums! Internets, look out! Anyways, since I've got nothing better to do here, I thought I'd do a quick rundown of some projects I have in the works. Nova City Stories This one, everyone should know about. While it's not the first comic I've written, it's looking like this will be the first of them to see print. At this stage, NCS is looking to be a 3-part mini-series, with each issue being a measly 10 pages. This round focuses closely on the way Monument affects the lives of the people in his city, and how individuals have different interpretations of what it means to be a hero. Don't tell Lyle, but I've also got future story ideas brewing to highlight the other members of the Tribulations cast. Silver Streak This is the one I've been developing for the folks over at AC Comics as a back-up feature in their new Green Lama: Man of Strength series. The story is a revamp of the classic golden-age hero The Silver Streak (from Lev Gleason publications). I don't want to give away too many details of the story itself, but suffice to say, if you're a big fan of the original Silver Streak, you'll probably hate me. Right now, this one is still waiting for an artist. My editor, Jim, is hell-bent on finding someone with a style similar to Alex Toth, so I'm letting him do most of the legwork while I just sit back and write. At this point, I'm slated for a single 10-page done-in-one in the back of the book, which they're using as testers to see what could be viable as a continuing series. So, should the issue sell well, and should my story get good feedback (hint hint), there's a decent chance we'll be seeing at least a mini-series there. And heck, I might even get paid for it! The Continued Adventures of Dirk Dixon This is a fun little project that I've discussed elsewhere on the boards. The basic story follows a pair of US soldiers during World War II, as they work to unravel occult mysteries and keep all their limbs at the same time. This is one that has been in the works for quite a while. We've had about a million colorists join and drop from the creative team, so we eventually gave up and decided to push on as a black and white book. That is far from all the projects I'm developing, but those are the ones that have gotten past the writing phase and into production. Everything else is still kind of under-wraps at the moment. As I get some more stuff ready for production, I'll share some more details here! |

I'm a big Alex Toth fan, and it does show to an extent in my work. Take a look at my deviantart gallery, and if you like what you see pass it along to your editor. http://talandir.deviantart.com And I've got a lot of new stuff to post this week before Heroes. |

John: That Hellboy picture is pretty slick. The story has a bit of a dark tone to it, so I was originally picturing something in the vein of Mignola's style, or the Lark/Guidano art team on Daredevil recently. I think something like your style would fit well within the original vision and what my editor wants. Do you have any sequentials (either pencils only, or pencils and inks. no colors, please) you could post up so I can give my editor a better idea for your storytelling style? |

I'm working on some new pages now. They'll be up by Heroes, at least pencils. I've got some older sequentials I'm gonna post on DA probably this week. |

Damn, just got word from my editor that AC is pulling the plug on the Green Lama series, and with it the whole imprint 'verse myself and other creators were building. So, looks like Silver Streak will be collecting dust on the shelf for a little while until Jim gets things sorted out. |

Sorry to hear that. The economy is making everyone cautious I guess. Good luck getting it sorted out. |

Well, from what I've heard, the "powers that be" over at AC never really cared much for the concept as a whole. Not to mention that AC doesn't really have tons of cash lying about to put towards promotion so the second issue of GL tanked in pre-order. As much as it sucks to lose the publisher, it's actually kind of nice to be out from under the AC roof. This imprint that we were rebooting these old characters in (Spark Universe, as we call it), was meant to be to AC what Vertigo was when it first started out. In 4 words, kind of fucked up (as my editor put it "you know that episode of the Simpson's with Alan Moore, where he makes Radioactive Man into a homosexual alcoholic with no powers? Yeah, I'd publish that"). Personally, I planned to take full advantage of that statement and came up with (IMHO) a pretty crazy story idea. However, I get the feeling that AC wouldn't have been too keen on some of the stuff I have in mind for the character. So, if we decide to move to a new publisher as a collective, hopefully we'll get one that will let us do whatever the hell we want. |

That does suck but hopefully you will find another and possibly better publisher. Until then we will keep you busy here writing tons of stories for us.

John: Still any interest in this project? Apparently, even though it bombed in pre-orders, AC went ahead and published Lama issue 2. We're not sure if any amount of sales are going to get AC to take the project back up (the release copy for issue 2 touts it as the conclusion to the Lama mini-series), but Jim and I are trying to work out some ways to boost online sales to at least build up some kind of buzz to facilitate if we have to take the Spark idea to another pub. Anyways, what I'm saying is there's still a possibility for Silver Streak relatively soon. If you're still interested, let me know and get some sequentials up on your deviantart

Yeah, I'm still interested. I'm cleaning up a bunch of scans to put on DA. The new sample pages I started before Heroes need a little reworking, incorporating some suggestions I got at the con. Maybe next week on those. |

Sounds good to me. There's still a good chunk of time before SS is ready for producation, so you've got time to get your samples perfected. |

Hey Ryan what about the Highburn team up you were talking about. I was thinking about that with Kenny the other day, it may be a fun project to do maybe annually or semi- annually with the guys here. You write it, each one of us draw a section of it and then we put it out. |

HBTU is out there for however we think is best to use it. Honestly, the story was just something I tossed together while trying to take a break from working on the scripts for NCS. I do have a couple ideas for future team-up books (one of which I had started, but now have to restart due to the stolen laptop), spanning the full spectrum and timeline of the HB books. I figure, if nothing else, they're a way to promote two titles in a more interesting way that traditional ads. |
