The Cruzers provided a fantastic fundraising event for IWS and the Eagles when they participated in the 2006 Nest Adoption Challenge (click on link for more information). The following entries are the archived postings from the extremely successful efforts of the Cruzers with the 2007 Nest Adoption Challenge:

It's time to kick off the 2007 Cruzer Nest Adoption Challenge! In 2006, the A-49 Cruzers Adopted SEVEN (7) nests, raising over $7,000 in support of the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS)!

Cruzers and Forum Visitors can participate in "Adopt-A-Nest" beginning today (6/21) thru August 31, 2007! You can give once - twice - or as often as your heart allows! <3

Again, the Cruzers have dedicated themselves to supporting the monumental efforts of IWS and are hosting a 2007 Nest Adoption Challenge - each $1,000 raised adopts a Channel Island Nest! Is there a way you can help make a difference? Yes - every single donation adds up and together, we can adopt one nest!

How about two - maybe three - can we surpass the seven we adopted in 2006!

There are several ways that you can make your contribution-:

:chk: 1. Visit the IWS.org website and select "Support IWS" then select "Contribute and Receive A Gift"
NOTE: If you pay thru Pay Pal, you must select a quantity to represent your total amount
(it allows for $5.00 increments)

:chk: 2. You can mail checks to: Institute for Wildlife Studies - PO BOX 2500 - Avalon CA 90704

:chk: 3. Credit card information can be emailed to Peter Sharpe, Ph.D. at IWS: sharpe@iws.org

NOTE: Just be sure to indicate "Cruzer Nest Adoption Challenge" ^"^ ^"^ ^"^

You DO NOT have to be a forum member to contribute - any visitor to the forum, any observer of the nests, any lover of Eagles - you are all welcome to help support the IWS effort!

The benefits of a nest adoption include: an adoption certificate and photo of the chick(s), a 4-5 hour tour for 3 people of Catalina Island and the IWS facilities, and an invitation for three people to visit Catalina to see eagle chick(s) before they are fostered into a nest (mid-March/mid-April 2008). For the purpose of the Forum Challenge, the nest adoption package will be distributed in 3 parts to 3 individuals: i. an adoption certificate and photo of the chick(s) -or- 2. a 4-5 hour tour for 3 people of Catalina Island and the IWS facilities -or- 3. an invitation for three people to visit Catalina to see eagle chick(s) before they are fostered into a nest (mid-March/mid-April 2008) - for each nest that the Forum adopts.

*** Each person who contributes towards this nest adoption challenge will be entered into a drawing to receive one of the adoption benefits. The more nests that are adopted, the more packages will be given away. <:::

==================================================
Update Info:

Nest Adoption Challenge:

If you are "purchasing" a new OR renewing your IWS membership, Peter has advised: "I apply the tax-deductible portion of any contribution or membership to the Cruzers if they specify they are part of the Cruzers."

SO - from now until August 31 - any donations to IWS (including memberships) - be sure to designate:

Cruzers Nest Adoption Challenge

so that you can get credit !! and our totals will increase so that we can Adopt 1 - 2 - 3 or hopefully MORE nests!!!

ALSO: Peter has no way of knowing your "FORUM NAME" when he's processing your REAL NAME at the time you make your Nest Adoption donation! So while you are designating Cruzer Nest Adoption Challenge on your donation - put a note telling him who you are on the Forum - example: Harpo516 is Deb Hansen - Joanie is Joanie (I couldn't resist)!!

It will help in the notification of the adoption packets and fostering tours and IWS tours!!!

A-49 Cruzer.......................................A-63 Limuw

A small ball of fluff reached out across the internet and brought together, people from all around the world! They learned about the plight of the Bald Eagle in The Channel Islands; they learned about the work that the Institute for Wildlife Studies is doing to help restore the Bald Eagle to the area; they learned about the life of a Bald Eagle; and interestingly enough, they learned about human nature!

In the excitement of the historic birth of A-49 - Cruzer and in the realization that we all have an obligation of sorts to help reverse the situation of the Bald Eagles, the forum participants banded together and became the A-49 Cruzers!

Their first order of business was to come together and take up the challenge of raising funds, as the A-49 Cruzers, to adopt a nest thru the Institute for Wildlife Studies (IWS), a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of wildlife species, habitats and biodiversity!

Much to the surprise and delight of all of the nest observers and IWS Crew, the A-49 Cruzers raised over $7,000! They adopted 7 nests thru their dedicated efforts!

Now, we move forward to 2007 - there is much to celebrate again in The Channel Island Bald Eagle Restoration Program! Eleven chicks were hatched on Santa Catalina and the Santa Cruz nest produced A-63! Throughout the winter, the Cruzers continued to observe the activities at the nest; posting observations to assist the IWS Staff; re-organizing the forum to make it even more efficient and user friendly; buying much needed kayaks and a high definition camera for the IWS Staff to use in their continuing efforts in The Channel Islands; and of course the highlight of the season - observing the laying of this year's eggs, cheering the hatchings/fosterings and now watching as the chicks all prepare to fledge and move on to their destiny!

And yes there are nests other than the three we are lucky enough to see everyday!

We do "see" them weekly thru the eyes of Peter and Steffani when they post the IWS updates each Wednesday:

And if that's not enough - posted just recently on the IWS.org web site -

"6/15/07: For the 2008 season we are hoping to get more nests on-line and to get better feeds for the Two Harbors and West End nests. We are looking for a person or business on the Palos Verdes Peninsula with a view of Catalina that would allow us to use space (closet-sized) to set up a video receiver and server so that video can be transmitted directly to the mainland.
If interested, please contact Dr. Peter Sharpe at sharpe@iws.org.
"

Institute for Wildlife Studies is digging even deeper to step up their efforts for The Channel Island Bald Eagles. We can do no less!

And lastly, as the Fundraising Committee Chair - I'm sending the first donation - $100 from Eagle Scout and myself! (now I just have pull up that floor board, reach in that dark cubby hole, pull out that musty box, count out how many pennies?? and send it on it's way to Peter!) :)^

Help me help the eagles - and you all know my motto:

Every penny counts!

Ode to the Chicks

Twelve eagle chicks were hatched this spring
Recently all have received their "bling"
Eleven have orange tags, and one has blue
Such special eaglets to me and you

Triplets at the West End - what a thrill!
We were all afraid that Harry would take a spill
Dianna, Wray, and Superman :EGSM:
Have fed their chicklets as fast as they can
It has been amazing to watch their three
Get along so well - a happy family

At Two Harbors we have quite a pair
Our Rock Stars sit and stare and stare
Their parents are always so sweet
We just think that their nest needs to be neat
Rascal K78 has been wandering away from the scene
His sister K79 isn't quite as keen

Over on Santa Cruz Island on April 13
We watched, and it was such a blessing
After a stormy night and on a glorious morn
Our Sweet Peeps, A63, was born
Cruz has a brother! What a delight!
It was such a relief after a terribly windy night
K10 and K26 deserve a round of applause
For such young parents, they've done a really great job

Thanks to Peter  B-)) , Steffani :<S><: , and the whole IWS crew
We've also seen the Pinnacle, Seal, and Twin Rocks chicks as they grew
The Channel Islands eaglets have given such joy to all of us
The pleasure of watching them grow has been marvelous
It's time to give back - please do what you can
To contribute to our Nest Adoption Plan!
