Hi all, Yet another exciting week on Catalina. Meet the youngest eagle on the island: 08-03, the West End (WE) chick: ![]() On Sunday afternoon it had externally pipped at the wrong end of the egg and was placed in the hatching unit. Since it had skipped the internal pipping and it was malpositioned, we knew it was going to be a while for it to hatch and that it would most likely need assistance. Pete tried to encourage the chick to rotate towards the right direction but it had gotten stuck on the internal egg membrane so it wasn’t able to keep turning. Pete had to assist several times during this process and last night it was finally out of the egg, 54 hours after it made a hole on the egg. ![]() We put together a video of the manual hatching. ![]() After it hatched we put some antibiotic ointment on the umbilicus area ![]() And placed him right back into the hatcher until it dried out. We put him in the brooder around midnight and it slept all throughout the night. ![]() In the morning it woke up and has been eagerly feeding ever since. We have a live camera in the brooder and we also have audio for the feedings. We’ll be fostering the chick back to its nest on Saturday so enjoy watching him/her on the brooder cam. I’m enjoying every second of having the chick in the office. In other news, the Pinnacle Rock (PR) chicks are doing just fine. I checked on them today and they look huge… they grow so fast. The Seal Rocks (SR) chick is also doing well. We don’t know the status of the Twin Rocks (TR) chick because last week our TR camera was blown out of place and the partial view that we had on the nest is now gone, but we assume there’s still one chick out there. We’ll try to figure something out for TR next week after we foster the WE chick. We’ve had no time to radiotrack or search for new eagles. I wish I had more pictures but we’ve been really busy. That’s I have for today. Enjoy nest watching. Steffani |

Steff, that last picture of Pete holding the new chick is awesome... what an exhausted chick... I was so worried watching the last two or three hours.....so happy with the outcome... Keep that food coming... |

I have to add that I used to help my chicks out of their eggs.. mostly because I was impatient...but it is a very hard thing to do.. breaking away the shell and not interfering with the blood vessels.. also, the chick needs this exercise of pecking out to make it a stronger chick.. this new baby eagle looks so tired... did you get any sleep last night Steffani???? |

Thanks Steffani. What great work you and Peter did with the WE chick! It was a long haul with a great outcome. This little guy deserves a good life. He had to fight long and hard for it! Can't see the video on Photobucket tonight. Will try tomorrow. |

It is a miracle of nature and besides the contamination issues, surely the WE chick would not have hatched without the assistance of Peter and Steffani! Thank you so much for all you do. That was just awesome video ... We'll look forward to watching this little one grow in the nest, cared for by Wray and 01! |

What a spectacular job you have both done. Thank you for sharing this very special moment with us, it was an experience I will never forget. Looking forward to watching the fostering of the WE chick back to Wray and 01 and to watch their reaction of receiving this little bundle of joy. |

Well, that was just the most informative video I've been fortunate enough to see to date! By watching Dr. Sharpe and Steffani assist in helping the chick out of the egg, I now realize the great task that these tiny chicks have in order to make it into the world. No wonder this chick slept through the night! S/he was so tired from trying against all odds to break out of the membrane and shell. Dr. Sharpe and Steffani, thank you for letting us view yet another miracle unfold in front of our eyes.! |

Thank you so very much for your dedication and expertise in helping this little Westie into the world, Dr. Sharpe and Steff. I stayed up late to watch it hatch, hoping and hoping that all would go well since it was taking such a long time. I hope the chick grows and becomes a strong eaglet ready to be returned to its parents in the wild. |
