Bald Eagle

Hi everybody,

We have had another cold and wet week on Catalina. On the drier and sunny days, Pete and I have been doing some camera work. I am sure most of you have noticed that the West End, Two Harbors and Twin Rocks cameras have been greatly improved.
On Friday we both hiked down to the TR old nest, which is where the new camera is at, and re-aimed it by attaching a long pole to the rock and placing the camera on it.
Over the weekend, Pete fixed the WE and TH camera while I worked on the TR cam a little more. I took some pictures at the latter nest.
The TR nest is right on the center of this image

Unfortunately, that is the best view we have of the nest. The TR eagles really seem to like their privacy and they are keeping it that way.

The view of Italian Gardens from the old nest. K17 and K33 spend a lot of time in this area fishing and waiting for fishermen to toss them a snack.

The old camera set up. We switched it from being on a wobbly tripod to the pole.

Pete drilling holes on the rock to stabilize the pole. (Not as easy as you might think)

Pimu and Pee’ ech have been doing ok lately. We have been feeding them local venison and at first they both were reluctant to eat it. It took Pimu just a couple of days to figure out that deer taste just as good (or better) than pork and now she gobbles down up to 375grams of venison a day. Pee’ ech on the other hand still refuses to even taste it. I’ve been trying to sneak a piece or two while I feed him the pork but as soon as he see the darker meat, not only does him back away, but gets all vocal about it. I really thought he was going to be thrilled about eating venison since it looks so much like quail liver/heart/kidney, and he normally can’t get enough of it. He’s so funny sometimes, he makes these cute, little noises, I swear I can tell what he is saying to me. We have been leaving behind large deer bones with some meat on them in case he gets interested. It looks like he has been picking at them but still refuses to eat the actual meat.
I will not be feeding them myself until January 2nd. I am actually away from the island right now and this will be my last update for the year.

I do have some wonderful news to end this update. On Sunday, Pete saw K70 by the buffalo corrals between Little Harbor and Two Harbors (sorry no pictures). I guess K70 also decided to “fly home” for the holidays. Lets hope he sticks around for a while.

I want to wish everybody a great Christmas and wonderful new year. Looking forward to another amazing eagle season!!!
