Watch this video. Is she really that ignorant? Does she not realize that the humble fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is THE most important model organism in all of biology? As much as I hate the little bastards, essentially all of modern genetics was worked out in them. They continue to be a vital tool, and she thinks studying them is a waste of money? I don't know what to say to this level of incompetence, other than don't vote for her. |

Thing is the only people that really know they fruit fly is that important are those in science. I didn't know it was that important until you started studying them in college. So chances are most of America will agree with her on that one, at least of all her base will. Besides she is a fundie, she probably believes genetics is the work of the devil since it is one thing that has indicated that evolution happens. With how ignorant the right has been lately, this seems like small stuff. I'm sick of seeing signs that read "Don't vote for Obama the domestic terrorist and Muslim." And hearing how the Iraq war was necessary to fight Al Qaeda. It may help the right win the ignorant and easily scared vote, but they're losing most of the rational moderate vote that McCain used to have. I would say that there needs to be a campaign to educate the ignorant, but then I realize they wouldn't listen since there is a culture that promotes ignorance and looks down on education. I really hate the people in this country some times. |

Yeah, anti-intellectualism blows. As you mentioned, there is a culture that promote ignorance and I fear a lot of people are too far gone for an anti-ignorance campaign to do any good. The best you could do is hit the next generation of voters and hope for the best. |

The thing is that it's not just in America though, it's here in the UK as well and it seems to have extended to the government. Children are definitely smarter than they were 10 years ago though but the government does seem to be trying to get us out of recession by spending more money  If Gordon Brown and his cabinet knew their history they would look at how they have been dealt with successfully in the past (particularly Adolf Hitler, the man was a nut case and mass murderer but did a fantastic job at beating unemployment) and realising the spending less money, cutting out so many go between people, paying themselves ludicrous bonuses for doing absolutely nothing but arguing about things and look at ways constructive jobs can be created and punished the oil and gas producing companies for ripping off hard working families and those bloody bankers who gambled money that wasn't even theirs to gamble in the first place. to stop those lucky enough to have some money to be placed into greater debt. (As if that wasn't enough, next year they are planning on raising university tuition fees up from 3000 a year to 7000! However anybody can think it makes sense to fine people THAT MUCH for a single year is ridiculous, I will already be leaving university with over £20000 worth of debt before I start earning. There is no way anybody apart from the extremely lucky and successful will be able to pay that off without constantly struggling to make ends meet without them raising the total debt to even greater levels.  I'll stop there cos I'll go on all night otherwise. Society needs to change and be reviewed and instead at reform maybe a new system should be looked at.
