Has anyone played either of the new Clone Wars games for Wii or DS? Reviews for the Wii game (Lightsaber Duels) say it's pretty basic and repetitve. The DS game (Jedi Alliance) looks like it might have the same problem, but both games look really good visually. I'm waiting for Jedi Alliance to arrive from amazon.com and I'm pretty excited about it. |

Well, actually I think both games will turn out to be pretty good. But I'm not going to buy 'em since I don't like the Clone Wars movie. |

I actually have both games now. I got Lightsaber Duels for Christmas and haven't gotten to play it yet, but I suppose I could write up a review on Jedi Alliance. Star Wars The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance Story: 6/10 - The story isn't great, but it's not bad either. At least they came up with an original story instead of just copying the movie or something from the show. The story is based on an interesting concept and gives you some interesting enemies to fight. Sometimes it can be a bit vague and you're not really sure how what you're doing fits in with the overall story, but at least the shorter stories within each mission make sense. I guess my main complaint is that the whole thing doesn't really build up a lot of suspense. I don't want to give anything away, but they could have developed some things better to give the game a much more interesting and suspenseful climax. Gameplay: 7/10 - The game's controls are simple and easy to use. The entire game is controlled with the touch screen. You move the stylus around on the touch screen and your character follows. You tap on glowing icons to jump, open doors, etc. There are a few minigames that mix things up a bit, like using R2-D2 to hack a lock. In combat, you tap on an enemy to engage them, then rapidly tap them high, middle, or low. They'll parry your attacks until you break their guard, at which point you combine high, middle, or low attacks to do damage and perform combo strikes. You can also use the force to defeat weaker enemies like battle droids. The control system is unique, but pretty simple. It would've been nice to have some other combat options or things to do in the environment. Also, combat can be a bit annoying because the touch screen rarely registers your high, middle, and low attacks where you intended them to be, making more powerful combo strikes hard to pull off. Graphics: 9/10 - The graphics in this game are some of the best I've seen on the DS. The characters look really good and are animated very smoothly. The backgrounds are detailed and pretty diverse. The lighting and shadows are excellently done. The shadows are actually shaped like the characters and trail behind them rather than always being a blob underneath them, and the way the different areas are lit gives each location it's own unique feel. Sound: 9/10 - One of the most impressive things in this game is the voicework. The voice actors from the tv show do all the lines for their characters in the game. There is a lot of dialogue in the game - since you choose two of six Jedi to use for each mission, they basically had to record interactions for all the possible combinations. A lot (but not all) of the dialogue is lip-synced with the animated cutscenes, so you don't just hear a character speak, you also see them move their mouth and gesture with their hands, etc. The sound effects are a bit repetitive, but for the most part sound realistic and are well-placed. The music also gets a bit repetitive, as some of the same pieces are used throughout the game, but the sound quality is very good and they used music from the Clone Wars movie and series instead of generic John Williams stuff (I love John Williams' music for Star Wars, but they usually pick the worst of it to use in video games). Replay Value: 8/10 - The game is fairly short - I finished it in about 5 hours - but there is a good amount of enjoyment left in it once you've finished. There are ten objectives in each level that unlock costumes, concept art, and character models, and it is impossible to finish all the objectives your first time through. Also, each pair of Jedi has their own unique combo attack. These attacks look really cool and get longer each time you use that pair, so you can replay levels as different Jedi pairs to unlock more of their combos. Overall: 8/10 - This is a solid game that captures the essence of the Clone Wars series very well. It might not be for you if you prefer games with a lot of gameplay variety or story depth, but if you want to see beautiful graphics and great voice acting in a DS game, this is for you. I also recommend it if you like the Clone Wars or just want a decent Star Wars game for your DS. EDIT: I've started playing Lightsaber Duels, but I'll probably finish the campaign and play some multiplayer before I write a review. |

I might get a Wii or DS for either of the games, I'll decide which I'd get first. Darth Slim, can you review Lightsaber Duels now? |
