Fraps is a universal Windows application that can be used with games using DirectX or OpenGL graphic technology. In its current form Fraps performs many tasks and can best be described as:

Benchmarking Software
Show how many Frames Per Second (FPS) you are getting in a corner of your screen. Perform custom benchmarks and measure the frame rate between any two points. Save the statistics out to disk and use them for your own reviews and applications.

Screen Capture Software
Take a screenshot with the press of a key! There's no need to paste into a paint program every time you want a new shot. Your screen captures are automatically named and timestamped.

Realtime Video Capture Software
Have you ever wanted to record video while playing your favourite game? Come join the Machinima revolution! Throw away the VCR, forget about using a DV cam, game recording has never been this easy! Fraps can capture audio and video up to 2560x1600 with custom frame rates from 10 to 120 frames per second!

Um... Here are the news for 2.9.8:

- Fixed crash on installation for some users
- Fixed Fraps not working with Combat Arms
- Fixed counter not switching properly between multiple active 3D applications
- Fixed Fraps not detecting windowed games while monitoring DWM
- Systray icon now turns red while recording
- Minor optimizations and bug fixes
- Reduced memory footprint of 64-bit version of Fraps

There are so, but if you don't have any problems with 2.9.7 I suggest staying with it. Since the upgrade itself may cause some problems... You never know.

Just a few tips for using Fraps:

1. It just doesn't like some sound cards, like RealTek.

2. Some programs will interfere with sound, as well - Skype, for instance. I usually close the program when recording.

3. The default Fraps hotkeys are F9 for video capture and F10 for screenshots. Make sure they game you're recording in doesn't use those keys for anything, or reprogram them.

4. The default file type for screenshots is .bmp, though you can change this. .bmp has higher image quality than .jpg, but also larger file size.

5. When recording video, start recording just a few seconds earlier than you need to. KOTOR tends to lag for a second or two after I start recording for some reason.

Errm... this is not quite true, as I have RealTek and Fraps works perfectly fine with it.

For Mac users there is an equivalent called Snapz which seems to work fine.

For anyone looking to record Tutorials etc then it may be worth looking into Camtasia (PC only).

I recommend that all upgrade to this one, minor but critical fixes for some. Two "lag" fixes, and personally I can't wait for the next version - since then it reaches a new milestone (3.0).

That's kind of true, I can't film in the game videos (shuttle landing etc.) either... But we need a whole new set of technology to allow that.
