I never imagined you being a video-guy. And give us the crawl tutorial you mentioned Episode II commentary.

Looks a lot like Krypton... is it?

You mean this?

Both were made using the same technique but they're not the same planet, no. The planet in the first post is the one that I made in the tutorial, resized (though not enough) to fit on the page.

A crawl tutorial will take a while but I will do it.

My first attempt:

It was kind of rushed because I was doing it as I watched the tutorial, and I didn't exactly use the best assets (low resolution cloud map, for example), but it's not so bad for a first try, if I do say so myself.

And of course thanks to Vadakin for the tutorial! I'm sure with a bit of practice I can put this to good use.

Like JC, I did the planet I followed your video guide. It was fun to do anyway, so I'll for sure be making more, this planet will be called.... Certar!

I notice there is something wrong with the shadows here...

Hmmm...

Your inner glows are too big. You only need them to move in from the edge a little bit.

Don't be afraid to experiment and play around with the numbers a bit. I tend to just wing it every time I make one.

Regarding the lens flares, where I tend to put them is actually the wrong place haha. They're supposed to represent the sun so if the dark side of your planet is highly visible then I would put the lens flare to the side of the planet, maybe slightly above, not on the curvature of the planet. Technically that should only be done where most of the planet is very dark,

Lens flares aren't actually needed anyway.

Experiment and see what you come up with. Try using color balance on the cloud and see what kind of effects you get. (I get a pretty nifty fire look)

Have fun.

Vadakin, I was looking at doing this - but obviously the link is dead. You wouldn't happen to still have that tutorial of your's, would you?

I save everything so I have it. Do you know of a site where I can upload a 124 mb file?

I believe I have the video but I'm going to update it with some new techniques for creating maps for 3D planets in After Effects, 3DS Max etc.

In the mean time, Tpiom, if you want to give him the vid, you can upload the video to dropbox and send him the link.

I haven't had the time to sit down and record. I'll get to it as soon as I can.
