Mario

Famous serious featuring your favorite Italian plumber in a red cap and overalls, focusing mostly on platforming.
Then: Started in 1985 with the near legendary Donkey Kong (or Mario Bros, its debateable)
In Between: Some notable spin-offs include Mario Party, the sports series- actually, pretty much everything. There have been mediocre Mario games, but never a BAD Mario games. One of the biggest hits was Super Mario 64, their first transition to 3D platforming.
Now: His newest project/ release is New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Just like the DS one, it'll be damn good. like most of his other games.

Verdict: Stayed about the same, pretty good since it started out so well...

Metal Gear Solid
Action game based on stealth. Known for its very deep, engaging storylines, which come with a shitload of cutscenes.
Then: Started out with Metal Gear for the MSX, which, was pretty much horrible.
Inbetween: Came through majorly with Metal Gear Solid for Playstation, which is pretty much a classic now, and they've had hits ever since.
Now: Metal Gear Solid 4 got a sold 10 from a few sources, and exceptional critique from others. It was a hit, and possibly just as good as the original MGS.

Verdict: Progressively learned from their mistakes and got better overtime.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic, the charming blue hedgehog, along with his sidekick Tails, raised a gaming empire through speedy gameplay... then tore it down. D:
Then: With the original Sega Release, Sonic the Hedgehog was fucking great- and fast. It was just plain awesome.
Inbetween: Sonic was goin strong... And then 16-bit went obsolete. After that, their games just got shittier and shittier... and shittier.
Now: Sonic Fails. End of Story. They're next game better be damn good, or they're finished.

Verdict: **** you.

Legend of Zelda
Link, the green-clad hero of time, repeatedly whooped ass on the dark lord Ganon in this series filled with enjoyable exploration, long adventures, enjoyable combat, and games filled with more sidequests than you can imagine.
Then: Legend of Zelda (the original) was mindblowing....ly hard. It was good, but it was hard. But very, very good. A classic, like many other NES games.
Inbetween: After their legendary game A Link To The Past, Zelda transitioned to 3d with Ocarina of Time. OoT is by many, considered the greatest game of all time, and for very good reasons.
Now: Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is in the making, a sequel to Phantom Hourglass. Also, a second Wii Zelda is in the making, which should be very, very interesting.

Verdict: Stayed Pretty much awesome through the years, like Mario.

Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong is the ape with attitude, the badass. muscly vhimp who really just wants his bananas back. But his desire for his bananas (and occasionally a piece of Princess Peach's fine ass) has brought us a series of awesome platformers.
Then: in 1981, the original Donkey Kong was released. You ACTUALLY played as Mario, but Donkey Kong was "The Lady's" captor, and he threw barrels and shit at you. You just jumped over them, trying to get the girl back. It was a great arcade game, and still very famous.
Inbetween: After that, Donkey Kong began STARRING in the games, games like Donkey Kong Country and the like. Eventually, he moved to 3D on the N64 game "Donkey Kong 64", which was considered a very good platformer. We also got some GC games that made use of electronic bongos.
Now: His most recent release was a remake of "DK: Jungle Beat" for the Gamecube, replacing bongo use with the Wiimote and Nunchuck.

Verdict: While not as good as it used to be, the Donkey Kong series is still going pretty strong. Can't wait to see a Wii release!

Request if you'd like anymore franchises done :P

Mario's involvement in Donkey Kong was a cameo? I guess being the main character means nothing anymore.

And because I don't want to. Save for the implementation of more pokemon, its stayed almost the EXACT same.

Fine, I'll do it myself.

Pokemon:
Then: Started in 1995 with Pokemon Red and Blue (or Green in Japan)
In Between: A racing game, dungeon crawlers, Pokemon Ranger, Hey You Pikachu! and more classic Pokemon games
Now: Newest game coming out is Pokemon Rumble on wiiware
Verdict: Best game series ever, Dirk was a dick for not doing a timeline for it
