Make many, many images and place the sprite in a slightly different pose and move it in the direction you want it to be going, then splice all those images together using some program and save it in a GIF format? I'm just guessing, that's how it was done in Pivot, at least.

I'm just guessing, that's how it was done in Pivot, at least. That's one way to do it, that's what I do whenever I do something like a sig or avatar. Animation Shop 3 is a good program if you want to try animating stuff, but I haven't used it in awhile, so it may be an old version.
