Is the saddle fitting demonstration on Friday or Saturday? And the adoptions are on both days, right?

The saddle demonstration is Saturday afternoon around 2:30. Hope everyone can come out and support our rescue organizations. This is going to be a tough year and there are so many horses right now that need to be rescued but there's not enough room until some are adopted out.

Thanks! Hope to see you there!

Thanks for the plug Ruth! I would love to see some of you there and meet you in person. We have close to 40 horses that will be on site and in need of a home. Most of these are broke to ride with a few 2 yr olds ready to be trained.

It will be a fun two days! Hope to see some of you there.

Brandy and I are attending, as well as Stacey and her girls. Hope to see you all there, looking forward to meeting Steph in person.

We all need MS Equine t-shirts or buttons to wear! :)

Missed you all Ruth & Stacey. Stephanie it was SO good to meet you in person. We had a great time. The atmosphere was laid back and relaxed and much much fun. Very entertaining and interesting with wonderful informative guests and good friends, and new friends.

The work our rescue operations are doing is invaluable and so admirable. Dedicated, hard working, compassionate people with our horses welfare at the forefront. It was a lovely day and I'm so glad we attended. Hoping to be able to foster, volunteer time and donate when possible.

Yeah, I wanted to go, but as usual, DH and Nephew are all better and now *I'm* sick. :(

Did you get a chance to talk to the Nutrena Rep Steph?

Yes, somewhat, during his lecture I asked a few questions, but quickly got distracted and didn't spend extra one on one time after his talk, as I'd planned. I did ask him about grass analysis, which is what I want to do next. Costs about $30. He mentioned that hay analysis this year in particular is something he would recommend. The ones he has seen so far are lacking from years previous. I don't really know if all the rain we've had is a factor, but hay in general and overall seems to be of less quality this year from what he has seen so far.

Josh (Dr. McNeil) recommended a mixed grass hay over straight Bermuda hay, Bermuda over alfalfa and others, and square bales over round bales. He mentioned that he knew that was not likely with the economy and hay prices, round bales being less expensive, but it was his recommendation. Safer, better quality and less waste. All the reasons I already refuse to use round bales, plus I can store and move square bales and not round, but that is the least of my reasons.

I very much enjoyed Tom McBeath's, Josh's, and Mike's lectures. Mr. Foster had to go and didn't present the saddle fitting lecture, but we enjoyed hanging out with him, looking at his saddles and picking his brain never-the-less! We talked with Rick Wheat for a good bit as well, he's a very cool guy.

Dean Cook was there and a hoot, wonderful guy to spend time with and much fun. I won't spill the beans, but he did have a horse trailer with him, ;) We met Bill from the PACT program and many of his horses, Brandy rode a wild mustang with only 90 days on him, very nice gelding.

I really feel as if I learned a good bit, although much of the lectures, I already knew. I do think it is so critical and so important to educate novice and even experienced horse owners to the exact curriculum presented at this seminar.

I'll try to get back in contact with Mike Camp, Nutrena Rep through email and phone and plan some other seminars. We'd talked about this quite some time ago, but didn't follow through. I really would like to have him out here to the ranch to do a nutrition analysis for all my horses.

Thanks for sharing that Steph. That's some good information. Did he say what exactly is lacking in this year's hay?

I wish I could have gone, but I've got the worst head cold right now...Ugh...and a slight fever to go along with it. Lucky me!

BTW, I found the Purina WellSolve L/S (I think this one is similar to the Nutrena Triumph) at the Brandon CoOp, but it's $26/bag. That's just insane. I hope if Nutrena brings the Triumph into our region that it will be priced more sensibly.

He didn't say Ruth, just said the analysis was of poor quality on much of it, or poorer quality than last year. This is one of the questions I would have had if I'd remembered I wanted to speak to him privately. I'm hoping I can catch up with him soon.

I did mention my reasons for wanting to do a grass analysis, in the summer months. I did not buy any Safe Choice from March until late October. My horses were fat, slick, bright eyed and alert and healthy on just grass pasture this year. And I did have a barrel racer horse friend tell me, no no, I had to feed grain or they wouldn't get all the nutrition they needed. However, my horses would have exploded had I fed them all summer. They were bordering on overweight as it was.

Nutrena does now have a Lite Balance that I can consider for managing weight. Mike, and Josh, focused a lot on water. Keeping them drinking, and having fresh clean water available at all times is key in their overall health and nutrition. Free choice salt and mineral blocks are mainly to get them to drink as they don't really lick them enough to obtain sufficient vitamins and minerals. That was another of my questions as I had read that years ago.

I've forgotten the details, but the tag on the feed is important. Although even with guaranteed analysis, you don't know from what source the crude protein, carbohydrates and the various energy sources are made from. So it is still not exact. Pelleted feed does lock in some important nutrition from the cooking process.

I'm a Safe Choice gal. I don't think I'll ever use anything else. If I do, it will be after lengthy study and research and most likely still within the Nutrena products. I like them. :D

I wish you'd been able to come too, and I sure hope you are feeling much better very soon. :hug

P.S. Safe Choice did come down a dollar or two between March and October!

SafeChoice is still too high in NSC for me to feed to Val. :(

IIRC, SafeChoice is somewhere around 23%...much too high for Val. I found out after it didn't work for him. It was fine for the other horses...just not Val. He needs something around 10 percent.

I think the reason they say it's controlled starch is that it's not all released into the body at once. Probably has some kind of oil added so that it's released at a steady rate. As a regular feed, I really liked it, but I think the name is a bit misleading.

Thank you Stephanie! I enjoyed meeting you and glad you got to hang out with us. I met so many great and fun people and LOVED Rick Wheat. I could watch him all day and never get bored. Unfortunately I was running around too much to watch most of the training demos and completely missed Mike Camp's nutrition lecture.

This is a little off topic.. but does anyone have an email address or contact information for the trainer who does the Parchman horses. I didn't get anything at the event and want to get information on adopting one of the mustangs.

Thanks,
Caroline

The fellow who is over it was at Cowboy Church last week and will probably be there again this week. I can ask then for sure. But even his name escapes me right now. :blink
