It looks like I'm the only person here so far who thinks that this is absolute crap! Terrible sound, graphics, collision detection and gameplay. Randomness plays a big part in it, and skill seems to be not required for the first two waves out of the four. It's also very unfair.

This is exactly the type of game that I was hoping we wouldn't get :(

This is bloody horrible! BUT seemingly pretty random sprite detection makes it a lottery!! Played it 10 or 15 times this evening - each and every time resulting in my screaming at the sh*tness of it and all of a sudden the bullets actually hit the bad guys!!! Went around 3 times I think! What is that crappy 'return to home' or whatever it is thing! Wondered WTF was going on during the first few goes

ANYWAY - just to slip my luck score in...........

It can be a bit random at times when you need to pass under a low flying enemy , the trick is to not get into that position in the first place.

My only real memory of this game in the arcades was a family "holiday" to Aberdeen where there was a big fairground with a small arcade and 2 new games i'd never seen before.

One was this , and my brother really took to it , and the other was Donkey Kong Jr (which i really liked).

A few weeks after the holiday our local arcade had 2 new games in , one was Donkey Kong Jr , and my brother rushed to the other one to find it was Pisces

Which although it has similar looking baddies

And a "fly up from level 1 to level 2"

was a different game :-(

Reminds me a lot of Phoenix except this has a bonus level and no shield button which would come in handy in this especially with those green blob things that seem to kamikaze into you.

I wouldn't say it was total crap, but it is a bit primitive when compared to something like Gorf.

Two things i've learned about the game

1) In a lot of places it says that you have a warp button to move to a random point , i've enabled and set about every key in the game but never had it work
2) On the docking level you get points for hitting the flags (hitting anything else is instant death)

Well , there is a 'button 2' - but never seems to work?

The warp button does exist, but not in the ROM that we are using - play with the Centuri ROM and the warp works (it can be used once on each of the first three waves and randomly 'warps' your ship to another location on the horizontal plane).

The Centuri ROM seems to play a bit faster as well (I think), and this along with the warp button certainly makes for higher scores -

Posted Image

- 18840 - did this on the first attempt on the Centuri ROM without paying much attention to what I was doing  (obviously I'm not claiming this one as a high-score :( )

There's an interesting thread on the machine itself (which includes some talk of the warp button) here - http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php?topic=489.0

So let me get this straight, everything is utterly random score wise?

Other than that a grossly unfair computer AI .. its all gravy

Why do you say its random , i virtually always have the same score at finishing the first level , and a very similar score at the end of level 2 (maybe a little more if i shoot more wings before hitting the main part to kill the birds), level 3's score depends if you take out the ship (and its flames) or shoot all the baddies or a mixture of the two , level 4 depends if you collect the flags and if you end up dead center or a little off on the docking pad.

BTW really good link Clarance - and i dont remember playing any version with a working warp button in the past.

Cos I destroyed the boss ship once and got 200 points.. 200 points only and then again got 350 for the flying things before it?

The title screen says the boss ship can have points from ridiculously low to 9600 as an average, so i guess everything, isnt set in stone

Ive just downloaded the Centuri rom from Rom World. From what ive read on the net the Warp button only works on the Centuri rom. Also playing the Centuri rom the movement of your ship, fire rate and attack of enemys is much smoother and faster. The warp button also works you can use it once per level from what i can see and it comes in handy if you get kamikazied! Seems a much better version than the Tehkan version although it seems to be a lot easier.

The title screen says the boss ship can have points from ridiculously low to 9600 as an average, so i guess everything, isnt set in stone
To get the maximum from the boss ship you need to knock out each of the flames at the bottom (one shot when it opens the port above the flame) , the total score for that will vary from level to level but is consistant (i.e i think you get 1600 first time round 3200 2nd time etc etc).

For the flying things on the 2nd screen you get something like 50 points for killing them when small
100 points when 'large'
When large you then get
200 points for shooting a wing first then the centre
400 points for shooting both wings then centre
you can also get 20 points each shot for shooting them in a wounded wing :-)

I dont see anything random to the scoring in here if you want big points you do dangerous things (keeping things alive longer to wound them first or leaving the ship until you've blatted all the flames out) , if you want lower points you just finish them off quickly.

for the main ship you could look at it in a similar way to Phoenix where if you just shot a quick tunnel up the middle and shot the alien you got really low points but spending the time to blast off each and every part of the ship first got you the 9600

I was happy with my previous score of 12,630 that I got earlier and was about to post, then I got this :) It's totally random if I get a good or bad score. I re-started the game about 5 times as I kept getting killed on the first screen, then I go and get this score, though it was slightly spoilt by it killing me when I didn't hit anything in the docking level.

There are 2 ways off that screen :

1) Kill all 16 enemy ships , the main ship will explode and give you whatever points you have so far
2) Keep shooting an 'open' port on the bottom of the ship , you can do this by just extinguishing one flame and get 100 points for it (i tried but it doesnt do anything special if you dont extinguish any)

8940 - a massive increase of about 700 points :-)

I also played some of the clones and variants , and they do seem to be easier - i think the main difference is the rate of fire , the clone one gives you the same rate as when your on the boss ship (about double your normal rate) and the warp is a useful escape when your stuck in a bad position and cant get out

Really don't like the fact that alien ships can just fly into you at lightning speed. Very annoying and makes me turn the game off every time it happens.
