Tottenham Hotspur Football Club are being tipped to enter the race for Gareth Barry.

Rafael Benitez spent much of the summer trying to lure the England international to Liverpool, but his Anfield board refused to meet Aston Villa’s asking price of £18million.

With just eighteen months remaining on his contract at Villa Park, Villa are aware they could lose the midfielder if he doesn’t agree a new deal, but Martin O’Neill is refusing to panic.

"All I will say to you is that we said once the Liverpool saga had passed we would look at it from window to window,” he told the Birmingham Mail. ''As far as I'm concerned that's where it remains.”

It is believed that whereas Benitez is planning to wait for the summer to try again to sign Barry, Harry Redknapp is willing to meet Villa’s asking price of £18million in January.

Whaddya reckon??

not bothered either way. I don't think he is any better than what we already have. If he comes it would be ok, if not then not fussed

If i remember right Gareth Barry declared himself a spurs fan and wanted to come to us a few years ago before O'neill went to Villa but we werent interested he then signed a new deal got into the england team and now is valued at £18m with liverpool leading the chase.
We had the chance to sign him then at around £5m which would have been good business but we didnt now if the rumours true its gonna cost us three times as much which to be honest i think is too much. I think he is a good midfielder but not at that price.
We similarly had the chance of signing Eto'o for about £4m under Hoddle but again we opted not to and have been linked with him at £20m. It seems as though we spot the right players but for some reason we dont follow these things through and end up signing other players for similar prices who dont quite cut the mustard.

Barry is good but overated at that kind of price. Still that is inflation for you. As to whether he should sign for Spurs, I am not too sure.

Do you need him, and if you do, do you need him enough to cough up that kind of cash for him.

i liked him from the days when he was at brighton and played as a left back ...i think 18m is high but if that's the price, then so be it!

would be a great signing for us but there is no way in hell he would sign for us......Villa will be extremely close to breaking top four this year and he'll want some of that.

Come on be honest, does the money really mean anything to us as fans? How much we spend, how much we get......not really does it. Other than it being another talking point.

Levy said there's not going to be a whole lot of money available this January so this is either a smoke screen from upstairs discouraging other clubs from trying to screw us down or Harrys going to have to pick and choose very carefully when bringing in players to strengthen the weakest links.

In theory (despite the thread I've just posted on one Alan Hutton), on paper we have a bloody good back line.

Gomes....well loved PSV legend (heres hoping he CAN come good)
Bale and Hutton (both in Jose Mourinho premier league fantasy team a season or so ago apparently)
Woody and King with Corluka able to deputise pretty much anywhere across the back.

Our midfield has plenty of class in it with Jeans, Huddlestone, Lennon and Bentley all fringe internationals, not to mention Modric finally showing us what he's actually all about,

and Bent, Pavlyunchenko and Campbell all finding their scoring boots up front.

So ladies and gentlemen, whats missing?

In my book, its a top draw defencive midfielder to help protect the back line, hold up the ball in the back half as the attacking players position themselves forward and delivering a crisp pass to get the whole machine moving goalwards.

Many agreed with Butch in his thread suggesting we've been on the slide since Carrick moved on. Quite obviously he wasn't replaced with a player of similar standing so maybe spending 18 on Barry (if he's actually really that good) may well be the only purchase we need to make anyway.

Way over rated.

Also there are better players out there than him who we would be able to get!

I would like him but he wont leave Villa just to come to us.. We really haven't proved we are in any better position to win things than them atm.. L'pool will eventually get him or he will stay at villa forever!

I think he is overated, as are most English players these days but still a good player and I really think he's been good for England!

I reckon he'd be good for Bale too and might help him diversify his game on the left.

18 million is abit, dunno - not a rip off, jus' not worth it - my valuation reflects more 8-10mil but because theres competition for his signature, I s'pose i can understand the demand.

Man united paid 15 million each for Anderson and Nani and 18.6 Million for Carrick. Obi Mikel cost Chel$ki 16 Million.

Bargains are gonna be very hard to come by, especially when you consider that Barry has been a very high standard premier league player for a number of years now, i think 18 Million would be ok money for him. Dont forget we paid 16 Million for Bentley, wouldnt you want us to shell out another 2million quid to sure up the midfield, i know i bloody would.

This question would be 100% yes for me, but like others have said, i doubt he would join us purely for the fact that we are not as good as the club hes currently at. Sad, but true!

Fair comment I s'pose when you look at it that way.

You'd have thought players would be cheaper during this recession - not helping are they? I wonder if they'll get the 2.5% reduction in VAT from Barrys original price in the summer (when Liverfool were after him). Can you VAT a person? AND what the fork am i on about?
