Hi, everyone: I have been looking for experienced opinion that could help me assure good care to VOLKY Brought VOLKY 4 months ago at a pet shop an was told to have about 3 months of age. So I figure it was born on January, 2009 and should be now 6-7 months old Plastron measures 2 inches and weight is 1.5 oz. I have two concerns 1) The plastron feels soft to gentle pressure in the center. Is this OK at this age ? Does this represent a nutritional deficiency? 2) VOLKY seems to be too selective in picking what to eat and will always prefer Romaine lettuce to any other alternative Could accept (on a very limited scale) some broad leaf grass, vines of hibiscus leafs but then seems to go on hunger strike for a day or even two if I don feed Romaine again. Definitely will not have anything that is not green, so forget about hibiscus flowers, strawberries, carrots or bannanas. I will be very grateful to have experienced answers to my questions Albert |

Hi Acarrera, I will see if I can help you from personal experience. 1. It depends on how soft. I would get him checked at a vet just to be sure. Is it mushy soft of just soft enough for you to make it give a little. If it is the first make sure to get him checked asap. Could be a calcium deficiency or could be dehyration. Both problems that could cause a soft shell. I would get him checked just to be safe. What is his living quarters like? He is so small that it is hard to tell when there is a problem. Almost forgot, is it just in the center? 2. Try to mix in other items slowly with the Romaine. Like cut up grass or hay. They are really picky as youngsters! But like any kid if you don't fix the problem young he will only get pickier. I used to cut up grass and put in on top of the lettuce so Henry would have to eat the grass to get to the lettuce. Then I would slowly add more grass and take away more lettuce. Now he loves grass. He was really picky at first too. |

| Hibiscus leaves, not flowers, dandelions, and canned pumpkin are like crack to my two hatchlings. They won't touch the hibiscus flowers, rose petals, or prickly pears. I'm hoping their "palate" broadens a bit as they get older. |

1. It really depends how soft. You should be soaking every other day for 15 minutes, and you should be sprinkling with a calcium supplement, at every feeding once daily. You should try this now, and then get back to me and let me know if it gets better. Though, this sometimes is normal in babies.. It really depends on your routine. 2. Most to all hatchlings are VERY picky eaters at such a young age. You should try giving them Mazuri or Spring Mix. That usually cracks them. Spring mix is a good daily diet, and mazuri is good once or twice a week. |
