Lost Tort found 2 years later under Vinyl Pool

My sister had a desert tort that came up missing two years ago from his outside pen. She found at the time he had tunnels going in every direction. We just thought he either wandered off or tunneled off some place else. We never found him although kept his pen in case he came home.
Yesterday my sister tore down her 3 year above ground vinyl pool, she found underneath the bottom of the pool liner tunnels in every direction and her dead empty shelled tort. She was hysterical needless to say.

Is it possible that the tort dug up to the bottom pool liner and became stuck from the weight of the pool water and wasn't able to move back down the tunnel? :'(
