Kate liked the cold. It had a way of clearing her head, especially when she was upset. The dungeons had become a sort of second home to her since she'd come to school, and it seemed like she needed its comfortable shelter more and more as the years went on. It had gotten to the point that she never even opened a letter from home lest she was tucked neatly away in a corner of the dungeon somewhere.

So it was that she made her way downstairs early Saturday morning, just after breakfast, a letter from Tom clutched tightly in one hand. She would have known that it was from him even if she hadn't read the name; the meticulous, narrow, spiky, evenly spaced letters would have given him away. His handwriting alone was enough to drive a stake of fear into her heart. In all the years she'd gone to school here, Tom had never once sent her a letter, but, somehow, she doubted that this was any sort of olive branch.

As was her tradition, Kate found some corner to curl up in. A dim, flickering torch overhead served to illuminate her letter, at least enough to read it, but it cast grimly shadows across it that smelt of foreboding. She slid down to the floor, the coolness of the stone floor and the poke of the uneven walls into her back grounding her, so she was able to take a deep breath and open the envelope, carefully withdrawing the parchment within.

Kate-

As we have all known for some time now, you are not my daughter. We have never attempted to sugar coat the issue of your mother's indiscretion in our house, nor shall we. Contrary to popular belief, I did not even make a point of hiding the fact from the neighbors, though Merlin knows your mother did. In any case, it seemed indecent to me.

Now that you are older- near old enough to be out on your own- I have taken the liberties of trying to locate your birth father. When you leave school, I want you to have a possibility of a family to turn to, and I know that you do not have that connection with my children and I. In any case, you may think of this as my parting gift to you, a token of the years I have kept you under my roof.

Your father's name is Frederick Kentigern. He lives in Scotland, somewhere, and is only a few years older than your mother. From what I've heard of him, however, he is not exactly the patronly type. He left "his son", Donnan, in the care of a muggle man for five years. I have every right to believe that the boy was abused in the home, along with his sister. When he started Hogwarts, the boy was disowned entirely. I don't know much except that it is perhaps not in your best interest to contact him after all.

Donnan is my son, not his. I have made enough inquiries to deduce that. Whether or not he knew that is uncertain at this time, but I think he might have. From what I've heard, the man always favored his daughter- truly his, not just dumped at his house as was my son. And now you see what a joke your mother has played upon our families, making each of us raise a child who is not our own. It is more than a mere cruel twist of fate.

When I first heard of what your father did to my son, I was all for revenge, for dumping you on the streets as he did my son. I will not pretend that I have any true feelings for you, Kate, save for regret and anger towards your mother. However, never have I wished malice on a child, and whatever else you might be, you are still a child. I have come up with another solution.

I have purchased a small flat for you in Hogsmeade. I have always told you children that I would buy your first house for you so you would not enter the world in debt, and I will keep that promise, even with you... However I ask that you move into it a year earlier than you otherwise might. Go there after school ends, go there for the holidays... I don't care. It's yours, to do with as you will. I shall also send you a monthly stipend until one year past adulthood- your eighteenth birthday. It will be more than enough to get you by at that point, but I suggest you get a job, and save up your money for after that. Past your eighteenth birthday, you will hear from me no more. I will have done more than enough for you by then to appease any higher being. Perhaps even to appease you.

Truly,

Tom

Kate stared at the letter in disbelief. Somehow the cold of the dungeon managed to get into her in a way it never had before, betraying her as the world had betrayed her. She shivered slightly, tucking back a little into her robe and resting her chin on her knees. She stared blankly ahead, her eyes unseeing. There was so much information in that letter, so many things to take in.

One thing was unnaturally clear. Dusty was her brother. Half brother. As much as any of her other siblings. She wondered if Tom intended to claim him. She almost doubted it. For all his self righteous words about the treatment of "his son", she knew that he wanted to be done with anything and everything that might remind him of the affair. That was why he had gotten rid of her... Bought her off, as it were.

He was right about one thing. Her mother had played quite a joke, all those years ago, upon the two men she presumably loved. Kate shivered again, but this time it wasn't from the cold. How could a woman subject two of her children to be raised like that? She had to have known how it would end.

Kate tensed her muscles as she always did when she wanted to cry. She had not done so in nearly ten years... Today, however, no manipulation of her body could hold her tears in, and they fell one after another out her eyes and down her face, as if in a haste to get out first. So many tears, more than she'd ever thought possible, tears for all her past hurts.... They left her weak and out of breath. She was alone, she thought to herself. She was all alone.
