Phil Neville admits a place in Europe must be the objective for Everton this season.

The Toffees finished 11th in The Premiership last term after a disappointing start to the campaign.

The previous season, Everton qualified for the UEFA Champions League, only to miss out on the group phase and then fail to make progress in the Uefa Cup.

Neville is confident the players have learned from those setbacks and feels David Moyes has the squad to make an impact over the coming months.

"Somebody said that this is probably the best passage of football since the glory days," Neville told Sky Sports News.

"That's the kind of football and the kind of results this set of players can achieve.

"That's what makes the first half of last season so disappointing. If we had won a couple more games we would have been right in the mix for the Uefa Cup places.

"With the players we've got, and the additions we've made this season, that's what we should be aiming for."

Moyes has added to the English contingent at Goodison Park by signing Championship duo Andy Johnson and Joleon Lescott.

With Steve McClaren taking over the national team, Neville is hoping the new England boss finds plenty of opportunities to visit Merseyside.

He added: "The more English players we've got in the team, the more chances the England manager can come and watch us.

"If he comes and watches us, and sees us playing well, it's great for the club that we're getting international honours."

Everton start their pre-season programme on Saturday by splitting the first-team squad for games against Bury and Port Vale.

Neville is due to feature at Gigg Lane and the former Manchester United stalwart is looking forward to playing matches again.

He concluded: "It's been really tough. I think with games we've got three this week and they've come at just the right time.

"There is only so much training you can do before you need a game and we're ready for games.

"This is what players like doing and I prefer playing games than running round fields, up hills and in sand."
