It is understood that Royals manager Steve Coppell had made a bid of Ł1.2m for the 24-year-old. However, Black Cats chief executive Peter Walker insisted: "Dean is an important part of our plans." Whitehead joined Sunderland from Oxford in 2004, and was one of the few players to impress as they were relegated from the Premiership last season.
