Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech is confident he will recover from shoulder surgery in time for the champion's season opener on 20 August.

The 24-year-old had both shoulders operated on this summer to clear up minor problems which forced him to take painkillers prior to matches.

Cech said: "The prognosis is positive. I should be able to manage the start of the season."

Chelsea play their first match of the new season at home to Manchester City.

Cech had waited until his country, the Czech Republic, were eliminated from the World Cup before arranging the two-hour operation.

The keeper played in all three group matches but the Czechs did not advance to the knockout stages.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho will be anxious to welcome Cech back as the £7m-signing from Rennes was key to the Blues' back-to-back Premiership crowns.
