Manager Glenn Roeder has confirmed that Newcastle are close to sealing the transfer of Chelsea winger Damien Duff.

The 27-year-old is undergoing a medical after agreeing personal terms and is expected be unveiled at St James' Park for a reported £10m on Monday.

Roeder told Setanta Sports: "We're very, very close, he has just got to get through his medical.

"We're not expecting any problems and we're waiting to get the OK from our doctor so it can be rubber-stamped."

Roeder is currently in Norway for his side's Intertoto clash with Lillestrom and before the match he spoke of his delight at capturing the Republic of Ireland international.

He added: "I can't tell you how pleased I am about getting a player of that quality. I would think it will excite our fans as well.

The Magpies boss also set his sights on strengthening his squad further by bringing in more players.

He said: "You can only do one transfer at a time, let's get Damien into the club first and hopefully that will be done by Monday afternoon for sure, then we can start talking about the next player.

"But we've got a list of players now that we want to start working our way through."

Tottenham were thought to be leading the chase for Duff but their bid of £7m was turned down by Chelsea.

Duff joined Chelsea from Blackburn for £17m in 2003 but the arrivals of Michael Ballack, Salomon Kalou and Jon Obi Mikel have put the Irishman's place in the side under threat.

Duff has one year remaining on his Chelsea contract and was rumoured to have completed a medical at Tottenham last weekend.

But he reported back for pre-season training on Monday at Chelsea's Cobham base.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho indicated later in the week that he was prepared to let him go after long negotiations with his midfielder.

He said: "I like Damien as a player and as a person.

"I listened to him for a couple of hours and I could understand what he has in his mind.

"After that it becomes business. He's such a good player we will do good business with another club."

The impending move to Newcastle will be Roeder's first of the summer.

And with Michael Owen on the sidelines through injury and Alan Shearer's retirement, Duff is likely to be a regular starter for the Magpies.

A quality signing there for Newcastle because he's already proven in the premiership and you'll know he will do a good job for the team unlike some signings that might not come off (like Luque so far)

Look at when they bought Patrick Kluivert he never really impressed.

I think having Duff will do them well. Especially with having Owen out for a while. I think he will soon bang the goals in for them.

It'll be interesting because Duff is a good winger but not a goalscorer. If Newcastle want a good season then they have to hope Ameobi scores a lot for them, or they buy another out and out striker.

If Newcastle got Duff for 5 million as reported. That to me sounds the bargain of the summer.
