Huddersfield Town have fought off competition from several Championship clubs to sign former Scunthorpe United midfielder Jim Goodwin.

The 26-year-old, who was released by Scunthorpe at the end of the season, is Stan Ternent's second summer signing.

Ternent said: "Jim is a real winner and a very competitive midfield player who is a proper Championship performer.

"There were others in for him but he's seen the club, noted the support and taken on board our ambitions."

Goodwin, who has also had spells at Celtic and Stockport, was part of the Scunthorpe team that won promotion to the Championship.

He was released following their relegation back to League One last season.

Goodwin has been capped by the Republic of Ireland and admitted that Ternent's presence as manager was a big factor in his decision to join Huddersfield.

"I know every player says that the manager sells the club to them but I think this has been more a case of Stan selling himself to me.

"I wanted to go to a place where I believe in the manager and he has a track record of success."

Goodwin is Huddersfield's second close-season signing following the capture of striker Keigan Parker from Blackpool.

Ternent said: "This isn't a dress rehearsal for me, I want a competitive team that's hopefully going to be right up in the top part of the division.

"Signing quality players like Keigan Parker and Jim Goodwin is a step in the right direction."

Solid, unspectacular player from what I remember.

Can do a good job in a number of positions at the back or midfield

I think we are playing him primarliy as a centre midfielder. We may need cover at right back though. As long as he is solid and can pass the ball about then its all good really as we need that rock in there.

I think you've made a good signing then. Goodwin played in a poor Stockport side and looked a capable centre mid. he was pretty young too so I expect he's improved in the last few years

Good stuff though with this signing I think that we may be selling Jon Worthington. Any takers? Hes a tough tackling midfielder, gives his all but I dont think hes much better than an average L1 player really...
