(Yes I know he did pretty much the same thing with Robin but for some reason I believe it left a much deeper impact with Nami. Nami is the only person I remember Luffy ever trusting with his Straw Hat and as for Nico Robin goes they really just seam to play around more like when Robin first joined the crew and Luffy was playing with her hands, and everyone else was doubting her.)
