I can't agree on that. Japanese are far more creative but the type of design is different. Read Akira or Ghost in the Shell, some of the best manga in history and see background art like NeoTokio, detailed Cybergenetic organisms and lots of other really creative stuff.
Depends what manga it is, some are made just to be funny. For example, read Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Great Teacher Onizuka...But each one of them has on the other hand a really complex storyline with added humor on the side which USA comics like to separate often. Or just take OnePiece manga for an example, if that's not funny, then i don't know what is? In my opinion, Japanese complex story line has surpassed USA's traditional comic styles (like Marvel, DC and others). BUT, that is not all that USA has to offer. There are infact really sophisticated comics in USA that can really parry even the most serious of Japanese manga. For example: The Darkness Y: The Last Man Global Frequency The Ultimates The Sandman newuniversal Transmetropolitan Preacher Lucifer Deadpool and many others... Let's not forget that japanese comics now known as "Manga", and the first ever Mangaka - the great Tezuka, has been influenced during the world war 2, in the period when Japan was occupied by USA soldiers and defeated. It was non other the Disney (Mickey Mouse, Betty Boop...) that gave so much inspiration to Tezuka when he created some of his best creations like AstroBoy, Kimba the Lion, Metropolis etc. Only after decade of evolution has the first form of "classical Manga" emerged from fusion of traditional japanese paintings known as "ukiyoe" and that USA style. So basicly, we should be infact grateful for Japanese losing ww2 and creating in the process a divine product that we nowadays know as Manga and Anime. Long Live USA comics and Manga, they both deserve a big applause. |
