Let's take this another way. Other than the fact that manga is read in the opposite direction, do you think the formatting of Manga is based off comics? I mean, they both have the same format inside don't they. Bubbles for speech and little boxes to distinguish scenes. Is that something that was developed by the first American comic writers, or is it older than that? If so, it would be interesting to postulate a theory about how manga came to be. This should still be within the realm of the original question but if not, sorry.
