Basically, most modern encodes, such as h264, don't work on consoles yet - console media capabilities seem to be a few years behind the forefront of internet media trends. As a result, while they support the older container formats (avi, mp4, and so on), they're not likely to support the encoded file that's actually inside most fansub AVIs or MP4s these days.

Actually I've got no problem playing any sort of file type from other fansub animes, it's just this one that needs to be re-encoded for it to work. As I've said before, any sort of avi type works on PS3, all I need to do is quickly modify it (takes less than a minute) and it'll work perfectly.
